For a mate’s 50th off to the Basque derby, Sunday night. Athletic Bilbao vs Real Sociedad. Plan to stay a few days, maybe visit Geurnica, and if it’s safe a bit of swimming off San Sebastian. Any tips from the well travelled and discerning LFW-er will be gratefully received.

Friday trivia. Who were the first foreign team ever to visit Athletic Bilbao? The year was 1913. The team was from West London, and they won 1-0.

Brentford, as it feels like we haven't won a game since 1900.

Look out for former QPR player Fred Pentland's hat in the Bilbao museum.
Fred was revered for his time as manager at Athletic Club during which time they won both La Liga and the Copa Del Rey.
Fred was an integral part of our 1907-08 Southern League Champions team and also played in the first Charity Shield match v Manchester United.

Definitely go to Guernica, the museum is brilliant and you'll leave thinking: Franco was a bastard and thank God he stayed out of WW2. The only time a Picasso ever truly made sense!

The Guggenheim, well each to their own. Maybe caught it on a bad day, but a lot of modern stuff that really was rubbish.

Some cracking bars/restos but I'll be jiggered if I can remember much else. San Sebastian, if you have the time, is well worth a peruse lot of night life gong on.

Did the same game 6 or 7 years ago. Great day, great city.

There's a street full of bars near the ground where fans from both teams drink together - can't remember the name, but any local will point you in the right direction.

Went quite a while ago so don't know if this is the most up to date info Danny...

Away from the usual tourist stuff you'll find a no nonsense sensibility to the place. We wound up in bars around the old quays. Most of the food was heavy going to be honest and the bean soup (alubia con sacramentos)...well, you could ballast super tankers with that stuff. Each to their own and all that. On that note, and unlike P Honneywood, I think the Guggenheim and some of the stuff that's in it is great.

Dont got to the football without tickets. We went to the Alaves derby and simply assumed we'd get them on the door or outside unofficially. We were wrong and ended up watching the match from a bar next door to the stadium.

Have fun.

Guggenheim - great building, but wasn't that fussed about any of the art. We did a week across the two cities. Really liked Bilbao, but loved San Sebastian. The food in both cities is amazing - you can go into the least promising looking place and the pintxos will always be at least really good and often amazing. Friendly locals, Bilbao is probably the closest I've ever seen to Naples where every business seems to have something to do with Athletic hanging on the walls. San Sebastian is in such a beautiful setting with the bay, the food is incredible, and it's a really attractive city too. No recommendations, but every place seems to have it's speciality - we went to one bar which literally just served one type of tomato - place was packed with people coming in for a quick drink, a tomato, and then heading somewhere else. They love their cider there too. Have a great trip.

Here's an idea. Take the train. Morning Euro star to Paris. Big lunch somewhere great (e.g., les enfants du marché), sleep off the wine on the TGV down to Hendaye, take the local train to Donostia and you'll be there in time for pinxos bar scene in the evening.

Not into modern visual art, so the Guggenheim's exhibitions were wasted on me. the building is unreal, though!

Th old town around the Biboko Cathedral is a beautiful place for pintxos and drinks. The covered market ,Erriberako, is brilliant for cheap cooked food.

Cool bar: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WeFVWhVTz1xpW4wdA

The whole town has a great atmosphere, I think. Been there a few times in the last few years and have always loved strolling around from place to place.

San Mamés is probably my favourite other stadium. Make sure you get in early for the naming of the Athletic team. Spine-tingling.

Haven't been to Guernica yet, but if you're driving that way the coast West of Bilbao has great beachside towns like Castro Urdiales and Laredo.

Have a great time.

Do they still only pick Basque players?

Definitely try some sagardoa (cider). I recall Nueva Plaza in the Old Town being lively at night and having some nice eating/drinking establishments.

Agree with others about the Guggenheim, impressive building, artwork less so. Although, the pintxos from the cafe was very nice.
