Ten Days that Shook the Dale on 17:53 - Aug 8 with 4726 views | Cedar_Room | Hard to argue with the substance of this article - RS has broadly had my support from the start and even in pre-season I thought we could be better than most had predicted. But the first game saw nothing to give me any hope with all the same mistakes from last season repeating themselves. I didn’t go to Gillingham but it seems like it was more of the same. I would love for RS to prove me wrong and I think the club will probably be waiting a respectful amount of time to see what he can do this season (perhaps 10 games?) and I’d be prepared to give him that too but do I honestly think he’ll have improved things by that stage? Probably not. There was never a point last season where we got into a groove and it seemed like the players and the tactics clicked - where the manager seemed to prove he knew what he was doing. A win never turned into a run of wins which made you conclude RS didn’t actually know what he’d done differently to make that win happen as the results or performances never sustained themselves. So I think we’re in an inevitable situation where RS goes before Christmas and whilst it feels the most fair and Rochdale thing to do to give him that time - are we not by doing that just hamstringing ourselves and making the task for the next manager even harder with even fewer games to turn things around? If the board acted decisively now with a replacement already lined up I’d have to give them credit even if it’s something outsiders would probably give us stick for. Up to them though to do what’s best for the club. I hope RS can turn it round I really do but as things stand I have no reason to think he will.
Ten Days that Shook the Dale on 18:20 - Aug 8 with 4653 views | James1980 | With hindsight it appears that the level of dissatisfaction with Stockdale he should have been let of go at the end of last season to allow a new manager the closed season to bringing in their players etc. People have said they want Robbie to prove them wrong, but what does that look like? Lets say we don't lose for a string of games and play well, but then put in another couple of performances like the first two matches of the season. Will the good performance be enough, or will every time there is a bad game/performance/same mistakes happen as in the past, demands will be made for him to be sacked. I know we are a patient fan base usually but appears that patience doesn't exist as far as Stockdale is concerned this season.

Ten Days that Shook the Dale on 19:27 - Aug 8 with 4485 views | Cedar_Room | I think it’s all about points on the board rather than results. We can play well but lose and so what? That won’t keep you up. I’m prepared to give it 10 (league) games including the ones already played so that means up to Northampton away on 17th Sep. Based on previous years you’d usually think 50 points is roughly the mark to avoid relegation which over a 46 game season is slightly over a point per game. So after 10 games let’s say we need to be on 11 points. So in the next 8 games I’d want to see 3 wins, 2 draws, 3 defeats. That would take us to 11 points and perhaps would show enough to make it difficult to let RS go. More than that he stays on for a bit longer for sure. Anything less than that I would say pull the plug, it’s not going to get any better. That’s how I’d be judging it anyway.

Some good points in there, especially those around what happens if we do win a few then go on another bad run. It’s a difficult one and also illustrates we do have that patience, because there’s a good amount of the fan base who do understand football at this level; despite what ATP says in the article, it’s obvious he is the perfect example of that - reasoned, seasoned, objective and very fair. Was speaking to an Oldham fan who expressed surprise today when I said Stockdale was in trouble, however he totally understood when it was explained that this isn’t the knee jerk dramatic reactions seen on twitter etc, but the concerns of the regular fan who are willing to support managers through a lot. We saw that all last season, if anything that patience and objectivity was proven right because it did look like things had moved in the right direction for the last six weeks of the season, even if it was only slightly. It’s the disappointment that we’re now reliving the period that preceded those last eight games. It’s not necessarily that the manager has no chance, it’s that he and the club should be aware the amount of chances are running out. That’s not unfair, it’s realistic.

It’s not even that we're reliving the disappointment of that period now, for me, it's the way we play(ed). I know Crewe are probably expecting to do fairly well after being relegated, but that game was all but over as a contest after half an hour. We did commit forward a bit for the last part of the game to no avail. Then the Gills game. We've not done well there either, historically, but we looked like we had no right to even a point. Robbie has had a good pre-season with these players and we've got no points, 1 goal and a fanbase that has collectively had enough of capitulation without a fight. I still haven't written him off if he can turn things around quickly. I just don't think he has the experience to know what to do to achieve this. Unless you think that given enough time stumbling around, he will turn us into a team worth getting out of your seat for, there really is only one other option. I thought he would learn from last year and come out fighting. He already looks beaten to me.

He is managed by a board of directors who must approve every incoming/outgoing transaction. The board don't appear to be panicking over their decisions to support the manager with the sales/signings/performances/results. Fans are entitled to voice their opinions but some of the social media content is just disgusting.

That last point is absolutely spot on. The abuse, a lot of it personal, swearing and aggressive nature of some Tweets and Facebook posts is embarrassing.

Its an interesting point well made. I probably won't do the point I want to make justice in writing, but... I wonder if some of it comes down to what we've been through the last year and a bit. Fans have united and fought tooth & nail to save the club, donated spare money and many bought shares. Is there a sense of entitlement (maybe too strong a word) creeping in that 'we the fans own the club so we the fans have every right to voice an opinion through whatever means we see fit'. More open communication from the club & its leaders (big plus) naturally invites more open communication back to the club, and not everybody is as polite or measured as we might expect. Couple that with the generally more aggressive tone around football since COVID, increasing pressure building up across society with cost of living etc, and the fact people feel untouchable at times on social media anyway. Its a pressure cooker that is ready to blow a gasket. For what is worth I think I've tipped opinion into we need to make a change sooner rather than later, but I also agree some of the opinion that has slipped (or in some cases repeatedly smashed) into abuse is out of order and something we have never been about as a fanbase.
Ten Days that Shook the Dale on 21:46 - Aug 8 with 3764 views | James1980 | If the board had said to RS before the start of the season 'Right Rob mate well done for keeping the club in the EFL, but quite frankly the football was pi55 poor most of the time. If the team which we've given you a decent sum, for a club like this, to put together. Performs badly in the first two games. You and Shan will be on borrowed time.' That would be ridiculous. Last season was a basket case and needs to be confined to the annals. Give the bloke a decent run of games this season to get things working properly.

The nature of comments Judd mentions, particularly on places like Twitter (and occasionally on here from one or two individuals who can't post without effing and jeffing) has been a constant feature for several years whenever someone isn't happy with the manager. It was certainly apparent long before anyone had ever heard of Covid! In my opinion, it's entirely down to social media, which then manifests itself at matches, as was heard during and after Saturday's game at Gillingham. [Post edited 8 Aug 2022 22:05]

The personal abuse is just out of order. Not only is it uncalled for, as it has nothing to do with the job at hand, but it also taints those who are making their points in a reasonable way. It was the same with BBM. Everyone gets tarred with the same brush.

I'm no Saint when it comes to social media abuse, but my target - Bottomley - was fair game. This manager is not in the same bracket.

And both are different scenarios. Any Dale manager is not deliberately trying to do a bad job. They’re not the anti-Christ. Therefore the personal abuse they receive is just completely out of order. Those who may have breached EFL rules while employed by the club, however…

You could be forgiven for thinking that these foul-mouthed malcontents had a different agenda to every other Dale fan with the way they express themselves and the way they verbally attack and accuse people of misconduct without a thought for the consequences or reputational damage. It seems like a deliberate concerted effort to undermine all the good work that has been done in the last 12 months. It's crackers and entirely counter-productive. The personal abuse stuff needs to stop and they need calling out for doing it. We've played 2 games with an almost entirely new squad, against 2 teams who were playing in League One last season. Of course we would have liked different outcomes and generally better performances. I read somewhere that Dale have had a bigger turnover in squad numbers than any other club in the EFL. Anyone thinking that those players will all gel into a smooth, fully effective team after 180 minutes of League football must be expecting footballing miracles we've never seen before. It's better to get behind the team and encourage the players than try to create divisions between supporters who ultimately (surely !) all want the team and club to succeed. No-one should be calling for managerial changes after 2 games. No-one.
