Should the worst happen and the Russians invade, I suspect that many rich Russians in the UK will be part of the proposed sanctions, could this affect our foes down the road?

UK to phase out Russian oil by the end of the year and we only buy a small amount of their gas. I feel strangely cleansed. Of course we'll still be buying oil from Saudi Arabia. Silly question - could we reopen our coalfields ? I'm told the new tech means coal can be burned in a far less polluting way. Or is that wishful thinking ?
It is possible to burn coal in power stations and eliminate the CO2 emissions but it is very costly, has only been attempted anywhere on a small scale up until now plus the UK pretty much gave up on the idea - carbon capture and storage - some years ago.

The UK still has coal mines. Opencast, rather than shafts and tunnels. Millions of tonnes of coal mined and burned to generate electricity. And more UK coal mines are planned. https://www.nsenergybusiness.com/features/coal-mining-uk/
We also import coal, chiefly from Poland and Russia. In terms of "carbon footprint", or however you choose to name it, it would seem to be less damaging to dig it up at home rather than use diesel-powered ships to import it.
The same principle applies to gas, of course. Why do we import gas from other countries when we are sitting on trillions of litres of the stuff underneath our own land and seabed?

Depending on what you beleive, It seems the Russian's have sent in their soldiers ill equipped, under funded and unprepared. They've been pictured using wooden logs to armour their vehicles from attacks. They don't want to be there and allegedly they were told they would just stroll through Ukraine to the sounds of cheers and welcomes.
The shelling bombardment by Russia is likely done in desperate realisation that it's gone very bad for them. They acknowledge they've lost around 500 soldiers but its reported that figure is really into the thousands. How does Putin's political career survive what is now becoming a military disaster?

Not for using when getting stuck in muddy fields then ?

The shelling bombardment is done because that's what they do when attacking urban areas - I believe that's a lesson learned in Chechnya.
I see the US ambassador to the UN's condemnation of the use of cluster bombs has been deleted from the transcript by the US mission because they won't endorse a ban on a horribly indiscriminate weapon that they have used.
Much earlier in this thread I wrote Carl Sandburg's poem 'the people-the mob'.
Why, the people's of this world, do we let the mega maniacal few do this to us? We don't want this shit, and it's not going to help us. Too many news institutions are too close to governments. Too few journalists investigate, too many just write what their 'source' tells them to.
My heart goes out to all the victim's of this war, and of all the war's going on right now, but just aren't deemed newsworthy right now.

Bang on. Unfortunately, the majority prefer to just believe the lies they are told and then "take sides" based on those lies, thereby perpetuating a situation which, in truth, is of no benefit to them and only benefits the few at the very top who create and push the lies as being truth so to further their own aims of control of the masses, power over the masses, and extreme wealth. War is of no benefit to anyone on this planet, save for a few hundred people right at the very top.

The owners get a better price on the international market. NS gas would be a great business to put into public ownership IMO. It wouldn't do any harm to utilise our position as an island to generate power using wind, wave and solar energy. the infrastructure for both these ideas already exists, it just needs modification to incorporate renewable sources.
Interesting isn't it. Looking at he special license at the level they are at that is going to be hard. Going to and from European ties on a budget of £20,000 per time, including the team, staff, etc is not going to be easy. Perhaps they should get a Bedford van?

"That was the case with another report from Ukraine involving a remarkable confrontation on Snake Island, an outpost in the Black Sea. According to an audio recording released by Pravda, a Ukrainian newspaper, and later verified by Ukraine officials, 13 border guards were offered a frightening ultimatum by an advancing Russian military unit: Surrender or face an attack. The Ukrainians responded instead with an expletive, before apparently being killed.
Audio of the exchange went viral on social media, and the clip posted on Feb. 24 by Pravda received more than 3.5 million views on YouTube. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine personally announced the deaths in a video, saying each guard would be awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.
But just days later, Ukrainian officials confirmed in a Facebook post that the men were still alive, taken prisoner by Russian forces."
Also, have read reports alleging that the Russian warship involved in that attack has been sunk, but no confirmation yet.
