BG has supplied me since we moved here 4 1/2 years ago. Since the start of the Pandemic, they have estimated my bill and have set my monthly payments. Just b4 Xmas they announced that my monthly payment was about to more than double and that I owe them £1700. I have argued that they set my payments and let the debt accrue, but apparently its up to me to read the meter for them. Am currently paying £200 a month to pay and clear the backlog; I strongly suspect this will go up again after April.

The world was always going to get more expensive post Brexit and because of the money Gvmt has spent keeping businesses going and people alive over the Last 2 years I suppose...

Can we go out yet?

I wouldnt be fixing at these current high rates. I'm sure the utilities will en our age it but sit with the variable until this dies down a bit.

Agreed!

I am with Scottish Power on a 1 year fix until 1st April 2022.
I pay £150 for duel fuel which seems to be enough to get us through the year so that when we move supplier at the end of each contract we are always either slightly in credit or only owe a couple of quid to the current one.

Scottish Power wrote to us a couple of weeks ago offering me a one year Fixed deal of £418 per month, I nearly had a heart attack so I went on to Martin Lewis' money saving expert site and he advices not to fix at this time and wait until April to see how they react because there are clearly energy companies taking the absolute piss at the moment.

Yesterday then have sent me an exclusive offer of £293 per month but that is for a 2 year deal with a hefty exit fee, so I am guessing that they are trying to tie me in for 2 years and gambling/predicting/have knowledge that prices will come down in year 2.

Just going to ride it out now up until the end of my contract expiry and then move.

Poll: With no leg room, knees killing me, do I just go now or stay for the 2nd half o?

We're with Bulb who are always variable but *supposedly* (though not sure I really believe it) at the lowest cost. Also of course now gone bust too and being run by Ofgem as they were too big to just collapse so I guess that is effectively taxpayer owned currently.

All I'd recommend to you all is to keep on top of your meter readings and be submitting them to your suppliers every month to keep the bills as accurate as possible. Much easier to stay in control of your account that way.

If you've got smart meters I guess they are doing that for you, although I've always resisted having one of them as I prefer to read ours and submit it myself. Control freak perhaps!

Up here in Wales you can get grants for insulation and boiler replacements - great news if you've got a boiler,if not it's a tentative pledge to supply air source heat pumps which are next to effing useless.Being insulated to the max is all very well but you need some sort of heat input so maybe a return to the heady days of red hot curry and huddled around a roaring candle during the inevitable -15 cold snap.
It's "heat or eat" time again Comrades!

Government have been banging on about us driving electric cars, moment we do they double the price of electricity .

Same with heat pumps, which run on electricity.

The green propaganda regarding heat pumps is that they are supposed to chuck out three times more heat energy than they consume in electrical energy. It was essential to maintain this 3:1 fiction while electricity was three times more expensive than gas per kWh - ie you would be paying the same amount of money to heat your home, whilst saving the planet.

Unfortunately electricity is now nearer FIVE times more expensive than gas, so heat pumps will be a real loser.

Plus, the theoretical 3:1 Coefficient of Performance (CoP) fiction was always exactly that. In real life, the CoP is nearer 2:1, and in cold winter weather (when you actually need the heat) it can drop to almost 1:1. So you'll be paying FIVE times the cost of gas in order to take the chill off your house.

Bang on, we are being duped time after time by the green agenda.

I’m not even sure if heat or eat will awaken the public to the destruction caused by the anti nuclear, anti fossil fuel fanatics and successive capitulation by both Labour and Conservative governments to their causes.

Better start saving your hard earned if you haven’t already.

What makes it so much worse is that we are an island. Ripe for large investment into wave power and wind turbine energy. No mining involved, no nuclear rods to dispose of and, with the proliferation of PV solar farms, we could have a carbon neutral footprint fairly easy.
It's not hippy dippy sh!t, it's a cost effective solution to the energy requirements issue.

I don't think it's the green agenda as such because I think that most people would agree that it would be better if we used less energy/resources and if all the energy we did use was renewable. I think the issue is the monetisation of this transition which is often to the benefit to a separate group of people to those pushing the agenda.

The current issues with rising energy costs are largely down to the price of gas.

Leaving all the planet harming stuff to one side, the cost of fossil fuels can only go up, they are finite and in huge demand.

History has shown that the cost of nuclear only goes up. The cost of renewables has been coming down. Onshore wind has been the cheapest source of new energy for some time.

The UK's clean-up bill for its current nuclear power plants (so, that excludes Sizewell C and Hinkley C) is £131bn. We still don't have an agreed location in which to store Sellafield's radioactive waste long term.

The government has just injected £100m into Sizewell C to make it a more attractive project from a profitability perspective. That power plant was already expected to cost £20bn.

Hinkley C is expected to cost £22bn-23bn.

Elsewhere, Costa Rica manages to power its grid entirely on renewables for a whole month. The UK has been making progress, to be fair, 42% in 2020

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Solar is definitely the way forward.I'm not a great fan(no pun intended) of wind except on a micro scale and I fully intend to invest in a 5kw setup. The maintenance costs are prohibitive in my view and the impact on the environment unnecessary for land based farms. We've got them all around us in Ceredigion and they're effing useless, don't go round half the time.
Wave power yes,we're looking at Cardigan Bay for a possible site but as usual the wildlife comes into play.
Big steps forward in the development of Fusion in our papers, but is it just another version of heating water for steam? In that case you've got the insidious by-product of waste heat.
I won't live to see it but I have great faith in Helium3 freely available in the Moon's regolith.
In the meantime I'm cranking up the old Villager woodburner. We tried cooking with solid fuel as an alternative but it's very much a case of eating when the food's ready and not when you are. Many's the time we've been waiting with knives and forks in the military present mode, the sounds of saliva dripping on the floor, waiting for the grub to finish browning.

The reason you see wind turbines not moving is down to capacity requirements. When the demand is low they stop producing electricity and when demand rises they will be switched back on. This way the demands can be calculated in the original construction and not have to be added to in fits and starts.

Environmental levies (which subsidise the renewable energy industry) add around £150 per year to UK domestic electricity bills.

From what I gather we have been paying 25% extra on our bills with a green levy before this huge hike.

I am unsure the best way forward as my bill doubles next month when my current fixed tariff ends. So I don't know whether to risk a variable contract or accept the new 12 months fixed term.

I was going to do a variable contract but then the bills could increase even further if Russia do invade Ukraine. Also Martin Lewis thinks the bills could further increase by 20% in October based on the market signs. Therefore I assume being fixed now until March 2023 would mean some protection. I 5hink the likelihood of prices dropping on a variable contract in the next 12 months are not good.
0
utility bill just arrived on 15:08 - Feb 10 with 2445 viewsGloryHunter

But have you looked at the price of the fixed tariffs on offer now? They're about three times higher than the current variable tariffs. It's a real gamble, whichever way you choose. Like others have said, Martin Lewis seems like the most sensible voice on the matter.

Errr no I don't think so.It's because the wind ain't blowing. And to rub salt in the wound they pass electricity through them and run them backwards to stop them freezing up.At least that's what happens around here.

There was much hilarity a couple of years ago when Aberystwyth council parked a couple of vertical axis Helical turbines outside their shiny new building.I think they got enough juice to power some Christmas lights .They've taken them down now, cost us taxpayers a bloody fortune.I offerd them five grand for the pair but they weren't interested.

When you see stationary turbines whilst others on the same site are working it is because they have been stopped with a "parking brake" due to low demand. A wind turbine only requires 5mph wind speeds to operate due to fan blade design.

I conjecture that many of you think it's nothing to do with leftie stuff and just mere coincidence or natural markets when it's big corp getting handouts from our taxes and us paying again to keep CEO's in the top 1%.

Just the natural order of things ... of course ... of course.

"The current issues with rising energy costs are largely down to the price of gas."

Environmental levies (which subsidise the renewable energy industry) add around £150 per year to UK domestic electricity bills.

Those levies are very visible, many levies/subsidies, for both fossil fuels and renewables, are not. The tax payer will ultimately have to cover that nuclear clean-up bill I mentioned and it's the equivalent of rescuing three high street banks.

An EU report in 2019 found that the UK led the bloc in terms of subsidising fossil fuels. The report stated that the UK was subsidising renewables to the tune of €8.3bn, but for fossil fuels, the figure was €12bn.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Have a look at this and make sure they've only billed you going back a year (if December 21 they billed you then you are liable for arrears back to December 20) https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/energy/energy-supply/problems-with-yo

Also don't know about your personal situation but depending on whether anyone in your home has vulnerabilities, you could argue to British Gas that they should have been reading the meter during this period and therefore you aren't liable (although if they weren't aware of this then it may be irrelevant). The kind of vulnerabilities which make you eligible for them to come out and read the meter can be found here https://www.britishgas.co.uk/Priority-Service-Register

Finally if paying the debt off isn't affordable for you then you may be eligible for a trust fund to clear the arrears. All depends on your situation and obviously if you can afford it now but in April when prices go up can't it might be worth looking then. You can find out about eligibility and apply here https://britishgasenergytrust.org.uk/
