I had never thought about using this board as place for postings about art appreciation, but in light of the above post I will just add to my Sunderland related posts where the casual observer might have gained the impression that it was all about beer. It was nearly all about beer, but....

I did pay a visit to Sunderland art gallery in the hope that there might be some examples of pictures by the Pitmen Painters - the original group came from Northumberland, but the tag has been attached to a wider range of work by ex-miners such as Norman Cornish across the north east coalfield.

But no, nothing, nowt, zilch. There was however a permanent exhibition of L S Lowry which struck me as a bit 'taking coals to Newcastle' sort of affair. To be fair, all the works exhibited were of north east scenes from his many visits to and holidays taken in the north east , but still odd that they have regional representations by a non-local painter, but nothing from local artists.

I'm definitely up for some art appreciation on this board - how delighted I was to see an Edward Hopper when I opened this thread a few minutes ago!

Give that a visit, how will we know which work is yours?

Same question. Are you a self-taught artist D'Alien? Interested to see your work.

Well, that's the second post this week from your good self that deserves plaudits

Taking in the cultural heritage of a region while visiting for erstwhile Dale purposes can only be applauded. I didn't get to the gallery but went on for some history and exercise at Hadrian's Wall

It's always good to get some perspective on a performance too for those of us who couldn't make it, so thanks to yourself and BartRowou for that (and DL for the prompt!)

Since the subject of art has been broached, Castlefield Gallery in Manchester sponsor New Art Spaces (NAS) by taking over unused spaces such as retail premises (on a temporary or sometimes longer-term basis) and converting them for exhibitions to promote emerging or mid-career artists. There was one such at the Wheatsheaf Centre earlier this year, now closed. In a couple of weeks time, a kind of flagship example of this will open in the former M&S furniture store at the Trafford Centre - its on two floors, both about the size of football pitches, so a huge undertaking. It might've opened before now but they didn't want it to clash for publicity purposes with next week's Manchester Contemporary Art Fair

The reason i mention this is, the last two years-worth of my work will be on show at NAS Trafford Centre. Not got a precise date for the opening yet, until other artists return from various places both at home and abroad where they've been exhibiting. That might give some idea of the scale of it

Apologies for those without the slightest interest in art for interrupting your Sunday morning footy, but the Hopper painting just provided an opportunity to plug this - and that's all i'm saying about it

I think the reason not much has been said about the game is that it’s all been said before. Yesterday was frustratingly similar to most other games this season. The defence was weak, the midfield was energetic and full of running but lightweight and delivered misplaced passes galore, players showed touches of skill and class but didn’t do enough with them, we controlled possession but again didn’t do enough with it, and the team as a whole looked so vulnerable to crosses and set pieces.

I was excited to see a front two of Henderson and Clough but the latter wasn’t much of an upgrade on Williams, although I hope that’s just due to lack of match practice.

Cannon continues to provide energy and bite when he comes on, yet still gets far too few minutes. Hill clearly has a problem with him as he’s undeniably one of our best midfielders and should be starting games, yet the more he keeps him on the bench the more he turns him from an already fans’ favourite into some sort of martyr, where the fans cheer his name more fervently than any other player’s in what is surely as much a dig at Hill as it is a show of support for Cannon.

Thanks to Shun and all other posters for their insight and feedback. My main reason for asking was I wondered if we'd turned a corner after the clean sheet vs the Gas. I know it wasn't a convincing shut-out but wondered if it could just give us a boost. A point from Blackpool is a boost of sorts too. I just feel (in my water) that we should be better than a lower mid-table team and we aren't. Doesn't mean to say we can't be, just wanting to hear about signs. Still, hope springs eternal. Cheers all.

Judging from his postings, look for an in-your-face style, big canvases that are bold and remorseless with a violent use of colour, brutally unapologetic but not without an occasional robust touch of humour. A latter-day (Jackson) Pollack.

But maybe behind the online persona is a painter of small, delicate watercolours with titles like 'The first snowdrop'.

Think I saw him last year at a Fans Forum asking questions about pre-season conditioning ... if I'm right, pretty much present-day Pollack in my humble view.
