Paper interest in Freeman 09:13 - Jul 29 with 65138 views | bosh67 | Apparently West Brom and Boro looking at a bid ITRO £3m for him. Would be a huge loss for us but given what's happened and what we bought him for that would be around a 10 fold return. Depends where we are in terms of being able to fight off bids. I imagine Freeman would be happy to stay as he plays every week here and perhaps the FFP settlement means that we don't have to get picked off by the vultures in terms of selling players. I guess if he does go we have Manning who could play that role and Chair. Hopefully just press bluster. [Post edited 29 Jul 2018 9:13]

Paper interest in Freeman on 14:26 - Aug 9 by Harbour | As Les said we are a selling club have to get used to it Brentford appear to have got the buy low sell high bit to a tee but if we got LF for £350k and we sell for £5M to £6m probably see Mass go the same way in Jan. if we stay up it’s good business if we go down not so good... |
context is important here though. Selling Smithies for a profit - I hate to see it, but we're got replacements ready, time to invest if we wanted Selling Freeman for a profit with 3 hours of the window left - seriously dumb

Paper interest in Freeman on 14:27 - Aug 9 by paulparker | only Smyth is a decent option to cover Freeman , Manning is a central midfielder Cousins and Pavel are not good enough , freeman created most of our assists playing cousins is not going to cut it and when I say replacements we will need a direct replacement for Freeman , we haven't replaced Ned or Robinson yet and don't look like doing it either we are depleting an already powder puff squad and could be losing our spine of our side Smithies, Ned and freeman in one summer |
Each to their own. I'm way more worried about Ned and Robinson leaving without replacements, as we were weak in that position even before they left, so we agree on that. Our model in the immediate term is to be a club that sells their best players but already has someone in place at the club who we think can grow into a player of similar ability. In the case of Freeman I'd argue this is exactly what we've done, with Eze and/or Smyth depending on your perspective

We do have Eze, Chair, Smyth, Pawel to replace Freeman though and 3 weeks of the loan window left
Paper interest in Freeman on 15:03 - Aug 9 with 2624 views | DesertBoot | Sell Freeman and 90% of our assists plus 15 or more points leave with him. It would be a fatal blow in my opinion - he's unique to everyone else in our squad.

Paper interest in Freeman on 15:11 - Aug 9 with 2521 views | WestbourneR | You got to say we'll find it hard to resist £6 million plus add ons. He'll go. Pulis does love a set piece taker doesn't he? Also got to say I am amazed at how blase everyone is about the fact we're about to sell our best player, having sold the previous best player a few months back. It's a fire sale. No other word for it. We've signed.... a free transfer 2nd division centre back as replacement for 4 major out goings. We weren't exactly brilliant before. I have no idea how we think we'll be competitive in this league when Freeman goes. Manning needs to have a huge season, I rate him highyl and I love his set pieces - so we'll see - it's kind of exciting in a 'how ballsy can we be and not get relegated' kind of way. Football League Russian Roulette. But a few losses in a row, added to a transfer embargo until the summer, would make it feel like an irreparable situation very quickly.

Yes he will be a loss ...I think lack of defensive cover is a bigger risk....time will tell

It's hard not to sound like a moaner. I'm not moaning. To channel one of our recent managers: it is what it is. I think Steve has been brought in to coach players for sale and in the hope that he might keep us up until we get the new stadium underway. It's a hell of a gamble, one which would easily see us in League One.......... but then, maybe that's where we'll fit in. Income, stadium capacity, gates, investment in squad......... record from last few seasons...... there's a clear trajectory there. It's not comfortable. I think we do have a plan in place. I think the plan might see things get worse before they get better.

Paper interest in Freeman on 15:20 - Aug 9 with 2378 views | Northernr | As I've written a couple of times. If you'd said to us in January last year - right, that's good, now do the second half of the season without Smithies, Onuoha, Robinson and Freeman. And by the way, Furlong is injured for January and February. You're allowed one centre back from the German second division by way of compensation. We'd all, rightly have been shitting a large brick and assuming relegation. It's a huge ask. I get the logic of most of the moves made. Smithies I thought was cheap, but it enabled us to bring Leistner in and our need for a good centre back was probably more pressing given we've got two good young keepers already. There will be another centre back, although that'll maybe have to be a loan now. I'm not sure why we can't just pay £350k for Hefele, he's great. Freeman does struggle to fit into this system and there are natural replacements who play that position better already here, so you get offered north of £5m for a player you bought 18 months ago for £350k that might be good business. But it's a lot fo quality, experience and big dressing room presence to lose all at once. Long, hard, tough season, potentially in front of an increasingly disgruntled and hostile crowd, for a bunch of kids to be coping with. Further complication is if we are looking to patch over the cracks with loans, we'd presumably only be looking for a season long loan, as we can't do a six month loan with a view to buy as we can't buy in January. And even with season longs, we could lose them in January and not be able to replace them. Worried.

A fair challenge - but statistically speaking they're unproven and would have a huge void to fill from Freeman's contributions last season. LOan player will take time to slot in vs a player already settled in. Plus I dislike paying for players that don't belong to us.

Do they though? We had 15 pts in hand, we could be 10pts worse and still survive. Also, as Clive has said previously, its going to take some doing to be as bad away from home as last season.

When we met him a fortnight ago, and as he said in the podcast interview recorded that day, he was expecting "at least a couple in" before the start of the season. He also said, quite pointedly we thought at the time, that the club had a decision to make about whether now was the time to move forward. It had been cutting and cutting and cutting for years, and it needed to, but you can only cut and cut so much, sooner or later you have to make a decision to move forward.

All true, but the usual 52 point safety mark was significantly lower last season because the bottom three or four were so sht.

there is no Sunderland, Burton Albion this year and we cant even compete with Blackburn or wigan on the financial front , its gonna be a long hard season
| And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

Paper interest in Freeman on 15:56 - Aug 9 with 1697 views | BrianMcCarthy | Like all of us, I can see that Hoos and Ferdinand are doing the right thing, but the very real problem is that we can't turn down these bids, we can only haggle. This is our lot now thanks to our madness that brought on the FFP fine, and thanks to the stupidity behind the FFP rules in the first place. I have Jim Morrison's husky, drugged-up poetry in my head all day. "I'll tell you this no eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn". Get over yourself, Jimbo.
