Alli is a bloody disgrace!!! 18:10 - Feb 18 with 23016 viewsThacks_Rabbits

Diving cheating horrible piece of work. So proud of our players and the way they conduct themselves. Cheating to try and beat Rochdale. Rose also behaves like a tool. Used to like Spurs but no longer!!!

I can see how it was given, it would not have surprised me if a card for diving had been given. Personally I would say it wasn't a pen but the ref gave it and that's the end of it as far as I'm concerned. On Twitter one Spurs fan said "Diving for a penalty to break the heart of a kid supporting their league 1 team, is that what we've come to? the magic of the F.A. Cup" So it's not just some of us that think it was harsh.....

That's what the game has come to unfortunately. Like last night's game at Wigan. Players pressuring the referee to get a player sent off. They've killed my love for the game

Whether it was foul or not is a tricky one. Its only a tricky one due to Alli's theatricals which blur the picture. His obvious exaggeration was a clear attempt to deceive the referee. McGahey may or may not have committed an unintentional foul, its hard to see and decide. For me, cheating trumps unintended indiscretion anyway otherwise what sort of a place are we getting into. We may as well bin any idea of sportsmanship and playing the game with any sense of honour, its sport. I would have booked Alli for what was clearly cheating, that at least I could have been certain of. Decency, morals and the whole concept of the spirit of the game are being eroded by behaviours such as Alli's and we need to decide what we want, is this acceptable. Not for me.

He dived
Diving is fully accepted as normal in English football now so the ref rightly gave the penalty.

The football bods had the opportunity this season to try to reduce this kind of thing, but they upheld the very first case that was reviewed post match (Bernardo Silva) and a precedent was made.

Any contact on an attacking player can be enough to give a penalty.

I don't think Ali gives a flying fig about whether this is right, just or fair to be honest. Football is a ruthless game.

It was a clear foul, not intentional by McGahey as he went for the ball, but got Alli instead, who is of course programmed to make the most of it

Accepted by Dale players, our manager, every single one of the pundits who've played at the top level, and plenty of Dale fans too

It's not tricky at all

I've got at least as much sense of honour and sportmanship as the next man, and with that in mind, I can accept that even someone notorious for diving can still win a justified penalty - otherwise the spirit of the game of football would indeed be eroded

You're entitled to your opinion of course. Cheating has no part to play in sport as far as I'm concerned and Alli deserved to be booked. Any so called victory gained through deception is no victory at all and those who celebrate such, as Pocetino appears to should be ashamed of themselves in my view. What sort of an example it sets to the children, God only knows. The spirit of the game is being eroded by the likes of Alli and other cheats while teachers fight a losing battle to maintain standards of sportsmanship. What is it they say, 'When the final arbiter calls your name he won't ask whether you won or lost, but how you played the game!' Equally, in my opinion, it was far from a clear foul and the photographs/ replays are inconclusive and skewed by Alli's launch. Quoting others who take your view doesn't strengthen the case at all, no matter who they may be, we're all entitled to an opinion. People in a minority of one can be right and no doubt this will run and run.

I blame Pochettino & Alli for Brexit, global warming & Trump's election victory.

I can see your point, but let's not pretend our players don't go down easily on occasions. As I posted earlier, it's as much part of the game as the nonsense argy bargy at corners. I hate it. Doesn't mean it's going to stop it though. The game has changed and there's bvgger all we can do about it as fans if the authorities refuse to tackle it.

My primary point here is this: if you think it's not a penalty, that's fine but those of us who do aren't any less concerned about the cheating issues in sport, or elsewhere in life

There's plenty of examples in the news recently of teachers cheating on behalf of their pupils at exam time, so being a teacher in itself doesn't make anyone morally more sound - the vast majority obviously do a fantastic job

My issue is with those whose mindset just won't accept it as a justified penalty because - and only because - Alli has a history of diving, which I abhor as much as you do. And whilst i'm not saying you have that mindset, it doesn't help your cause to denigrate legitimate celebrations by sports people who just happen to be at the top of their profession

I'm unsure of the decision, was it wasn't it, who knows. The ref gave it so it was. The straw men you come up as regards teachers are beside the point but I respect your view and the way you put it. Where someone supports cheating as the Spurs manager appears to, then at the top of his profession he should be even more ashamed as he has influence. I'm afraid I don't defer to their position. Equally, the pundits who talk about the right to 'go down' if they feel contact, are as bad. Didn't Harry Kane make such a comment? George Best will be turning in his grave! Just because its a trend as another poster has suggested, we shouldn't put up with it and should call it out wherever possible. The funny thing is that the players (and ours aren't innocent I know!) appear to spend 90 minutes trying to cheat the ref, then get on his back when he makes a mistake! As I said, it will run and run no doubt but lets hope the authorities do deal with it as they should. Good discussion, thanks.

If you decide McGahey did foul Ali but Ali exaggerated the impact of the foul you could award a penalty AND book Ali for simulation (unsporting behaviour).

Was pretty disappointed by KH's comments tbh and I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't be saying the same thing if an identical situation happened tomorrow night against MK Dons.

Ditto. If he and Poch are encouraging this type of behaviour, then there's no chance of it ever improving. It is what it is. Not all change is progress.

"What is it they say" - well if it's Grantland Rice's "Alumunus Football" (1908) that's being quoted it is (with three stanzas added to give more of the flavour):

But one day when across the field of fame the goal seemed dim,
The wise old coach, experience, came up and said to him:
“Old boy,” spoke he, “the main point now before you win your bout
Is keep on bucking failure till you’ve worn the lobster out.

“Cut out this work around the ends–go in there, low and hard–
Just put your eye upon the goal and start there, yard by yard;
And more than all–when you are thrown–or tumbled with a crack–
Don’t lie there whining–hustle up–and keep on coming back.

“Keep coming back for all they’ve got and take it with a grin
When disappointment trips you up or failure barks your shin;
Keep coming back–and if at last you lose the game of right
Let those who whipped you know at least they, too, have had a fight,

“You’ll find the bread-line hard to buck and fame’s goal far away,
But hit the line and hit it hard across each rushing play;
For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name–
He marks–not that you won or lost–but how you played the game.”

PS. It draws of course on American football.

PPS. Yes, a dive (imo), but players have done it for as long as I remember.

I was disgusted with Hills comments as I would be If Alli or any other England player cheated to win a world cup.

This is not the time for bickering.

Exactly. The two issues (was it a foul, and was it simulation) aren't mutually exclusive. IMO it was absolutely a foul, all day long. But Alli made absolutely sure a penalty was given with his pirouette. I think (and hope) that's what Hilly is getting at; that IF a striker is fouled, he doesn't blame them for making sure a penalty is given. Which is different from diving when there was no contact or foul.
