Anyone hear Taylor yesterday ? 12:15 - Dec 11 with 5738 viewsWxmJax

Just before the third goal he was in possession of the ball near the halfway line and was screaming at Montero, "GO! GO!" as he wanted to play the ball down the line for him to run on to in the open space behind the defence.

Montero just stood there.

We must have the only two wingers in the league who never think of running in to these wide open spaces so why isn't someone sorting it out on the training pitch ?

Ball over the top down the wings, shoot or cross in to the box for Llorente, Sigy, Baston, Fer, other winger to take advantage of. Sounds simple enough.

Montero's probably thinking 'has this football malarky finally clicked in Taylor's head, now only if his feet could do what his brain wants.'

Not sure whether Montero should be criticised seeing as yet again when he came on he beat his man and put in a perfect cross for the goal. For me, he should always be starting as not many can do that so consistently.

Taylor, to be fair actually put in a real effort yesterday. I still think we need an upgrade at left back but he should get some credit for some decent work yesterday.

Trouble is, when Montero starts, he often can't seem to get into the game, specially away from home.

I think I'd rather use him as an impact sub at the moment.

This.
Jeff is quick.
Very quick - even managing singlehandedly to keep Gomis onside!!
And has a far better cross than Mo does
Loves taking on players and making them look like mugs. But...
seems to hate running onto balls, preferring instead Imo to go from a standing start to make the defender look an even bigger muppet.

If you wake up breathing, thats a good start to your day and you'll make many thousands of people envious.

I just don't see any reason for that though. I don't buy the whole opposition getting tired thing - he's quick enough to beat anyone at any time. Remember the start of last season when he was embarassing fullbacks from the start of games? Seems to me like it's up to the managee/coaches to sort his head out. When Llorente went to celebrate with him at 3-0 he didn't look particularly happy to me...but I could be reading too much into that.

Perhaps the shock of Neil Taylor offering anyone attacking advice momentarily overwhelmed his cerebral cortex rendering him temporarily immobile?

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Montero is so good one on one that he would prefer to stand facing a defender and run at him than run onto balls behind his man. He has become reliant on it and looks like he has never really learnt basic positional play. Probably not easy for a fullback to play behind as he doesn't know what to do off the ball.

If he had Routledges football intelligence or Routledge had Monteros pace and dynamism, they still wouldn't be able to shoot, but would be superb players.

Taylor often looks to play him in behind and usually he just stands there because he likes the ball to feet. One of the main problems I see when they play together. Montero needs to learn though that when a fullback comes that tight to him he should try and spin in behind because he had a good 30/40 yards of space to work with and with his pace that could be extremely dangerous.

the words "consistently" and "Montero" are two words that are poles apart.
As Jack247 says,IF we could combine a Routs /Montero hybrid then we really would have a player.

I felt a tad of sympathy for their right back. He spends two thirds of the match marking Mo, then has the pleasure of Jeffs company for the rest of the match.
I bet he was pleased to hear the final whistle.

Been happening since jeff joined. Taylor wants him short he goes long then when taylor wants him long he stays short !

Probably why jeff hasn't been regular starter under 3 managers . Doesn't read the game well.

He never looks happy. I think that's his disposition.

In fairness to Montero, with the quality of Taylor's passes and the propensity that Taylor loses the ball in advanced positions, it is no wonder he wants to have a short pass to feet to try to guarantee the ball may at least reach its target. Also there is less ground to cover to help out defensively during the inevitable loss of ball.

Agree.
He looks lazy when starting but as a sub when the game is already stretched and tiring, he's in his element.

Well sure they tire...but my point is its not as if he can't do it at the start of a game. At the beginning of last season he was starting games and was being talked of as a top 4 player for the way he embarassed fullbacks. Injuries maybe halted his progress but I think he neefs to start. Both against Palace and yesterday he has looked far more dangerous than Routledge. Would be a shame to not score early goals because one of our biggest threats is sitting on the bench.

And somehow we start Taylor and drop Montero...beggars belief. The difference in quality between those two is huge.

Well yes.

Back on point . If we look at what the op was referencing , taylor wanted jeff to spin his man and hit the space behind,it was the right ball to play too. Jeff got it wrong not taylor .

So far jeff and barrow seem hot for 20/30 minutes only . Taylor isn't an attacking full back, never has been but he is the best we have at that position and at least has experience, knowing when to play it short and when to hit it long.

I'm guessing that jeff can't speak a word of English, either that or he's a bit thick. Wonderful player at times though.

Massively inconsistent sums Jeff up - he did well after coming on late against palace & Sunderland.
He was abysmal against spurs - didn't look interested.

This has been going on for a couple of seasons. I remember away at Villa I was close to the touchline, must have be 14-15 season, Taylor shouting at Montero to make a run and when he didn't, Taylor shouted at Monk something like "Boss, have a fcking word with him, will ya". Well, whatever words Monk, Guidolin or Bradley have had with him, has made no difference whatsoever in the 2 years since.

Possibly because at Spurs there was no fecking forward on the pitch for him to cross the ball.
