The Official Southampton v Swansea City Matchday Thread on 16:57 - Feb 1 with 2250 views | icecoldjack | I actually think we were ok first half considering the personell on the field. We are thankfully closing the ball much better than of late . Special mention for Kyle, i think he has been very decent first half, looks comfortable and is at least trying to get forward but not being reckless with it. Our defence is a bit shaky but i don't think we could ask for much more. The application seems to be there, so im happy enough considering we are no where near the level we have been in the past. Monk said back to basics and it appears we are trying to do that, our work off the ball is much better IMO.
The Official Southampton v Swansea City Matchday Thread on 16:59 - Feb 1 with 2232 views | monmouth | The scoreline's fine, but I can see them getting a penalty or a bounce and I can't see where a goal is coming from for us. Now, to be honest, I don't give two f*cks who's our manager, but do you remember when we used to pass? To each other I mean. Do you remember when we were comfortable on the ball? Do you remember when we carried threat out wide? Do you remember when if full backs came tight we had the wit to play it over them for our pacy players to run on to. Do you remember when we set out to impose ourselves on the opposition rather than giving them as much space as they wanted? Yeah, so do I, and I tell you what, win or lose it was a f*cks sight better to watch. That was 45 minutes of misery. If that's the future, no wonder we're last on match of the day. If we get a point I'd be thrilled, except of course it will lead to more of the same....and I'm not sure on a percentage basis that we'll get away with it. Anyway, someone asked me earlier if the alarm bells are getting louder. Yes is the answer, although at least there is heart there today. Just lose the bloody panicked rabbit approach mun. More wine needed.

Yep. I think Monk's got it right, the last thing we wanted was another hammering. Hard earned point would do the world of good.

The Official Southampton v Swansea City Matchday Thread on 16:55 - Feb 1 by Zut_Alors | Look at the room that Steven Davis has coming from midfield. With Tom C and Jay F so far back, he has to cover the Saints midfielders coming from deep. On the ball, he's been fine, but his tracking is Sunday league standard. Gylfi used to get stick for his defensive rate and he has improved 10x. There's no reason Jonjo can't do the same. [Post edited 1 Feb 2015 16:56]

Exactly, Carroll and Fulton are way to deep, Shelvey is trying to close their players down around the halfway line, then there's a huge gap to our next midfielder. It's the way Monk has set up, effectively playing with two DM's, inviting them on to us.

Not at all. I just went back to the incident I am referring to. The ball fell to his man. He jogged a bit, pointed to the back four and then stopped watching the said player run into a huge hole. Ash had to put it in row z and then screamed at Shelvey . I appreciate he's AM today but he still needs to track back when he is the nearest player.

The Official Southampton v Swansea City Matchday Thread on 16:54 - Feb 1 by Neath_Jack | There was no poor individual performances from anyone that half. We need to slow it down, get the ball on the deck and pass it about a bit. You can tell we are low on confidence. |
Just waiting for the inevitable.......looks like an FA cup round. Premiere league team playing a 1st division team....can you guess which side is the 1st division team. Please Swans let me eat those words.

The Official Southampton v Swansea City Matchday Thread on 16:50 - Feb 1 by Neath_Jack | You do realise he is playing AM right? Shelvey has chased around more today than he has any other game for us. |
He has, but he's also stood completely still on three occasions, watched the game in front of him and failed to support his team mates. Chasing around doesn't make him effective.

| Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

The Official Southampton v Swansea City Matchday Thread on 17:06 - Feb 1 with 2066 views | AnotherJohn | Satisfied to be holding the Saints at halftime. We have been under the cosh at times, but have showed a bit of grit in holding our shape. Thought Naughton put in a solid half. The only real negative throught I had is that Barrow is looking like Lamah on one of his less enterprising days.

The Official Southampton v Swansea City Matchday Thread on 16:56 - Feb 1 by FearOfAJackPlanet | It's pretty dispiriting to see a Swansea team set up like this, but it's worked so far, and if we get something out of this game it'll be hailed as a 'perfect away performance' etc. Just grim watching it at the moment as you feel if they were to step it up a notch we'd have no answer. 2 banks of 4 defending the 18 yard line from the first minute. We don't want the ball, and don't care when we lose it. If it happens to come our way, fine, we'll have ago on the counter attack. It can be an effective way of playing, it's just...not what we've been used to. |
That sums it up brilliantly. In the Villa match there was a moment when the ball bounced free after a corner towards Ash who was retreating but in acres of space. Rather than pick up the loose ball his first thought was to turn and sprint back to the half way line, getting set for the next phase of play. That illustrated our main priority this year perfectly. Given the personnel we have missing, a draw here will be massive how er we get it. Saints just starting to make a few errors....

Unfortunately we are suffering from missing our best midfielders through injury/form/Asia cup. A midfield of Gylfi, Ki and Carroll/Cork with an in form Dyer/Routledge would be doing much better. Our 'squad' is barely coping with the demands on it, but that's our situation.
