How long has he got left on his contract? Surely a loan to Fulham for the season is the best shout at this moment

Geordie, he signed a five year contract extension in July 2017 so has 4 years left. By signing the contract I don’t think he wants to leave Saints permanently. Perhaps another loan might be the best option for him.

Loan does seem like a good move for both parties. We should make sure there is a recall clause in there, for if either Bertie or McQueen get injured - also, if we (fingers crossed not) end up in a battle with Fulham at the foot of the table, we can recall him to destabilise them..

After watching Young and Rose in Russia I think it fair to say that Bertrand should have been ahead of them in selection. Then, of course, they play for big clubs so obviously are superior players.
I think Targett will get more game time at St Mary's this season, certainly ahead of McQueen, and loaning him to a rival EPL club would be a bad move. So far it's not clear what formation MH is going to see as his best choice tactically and there might even be options to play Target and Bertrand depending on the opposition?

The question still remains if Targett will cut it at PL level, he didn't really convince with Saints did he even when he was playing in arguably a better team than Fulham are now. Loaning him out is therefore a risk, what if he doesnt perform, what if Fulham leak goals by the dozen. Fact is that there are not than many left backs in the PL commanding a fee of around £13 million... so is Targett really worth that ....... sell him for anything above £10 milliion ....

it all depends on the system we play , if we play 5 at the back then he stays why becouse ronnie got the best out of him playing the wing back system, if not sell him becouse he wants regular football & its not a bad amount of money & PERHAPS WE WILL GO &GET A NEW STRIKER THAT WE NEED

I disagree with highfield. I prefer McQueen. Unless there's a secret deal for Bert agreed which doesn't seem likely, I'd let Matt go . We need to free up cash and wages.

Keep Matt. He will play for the badge and I feel come March/April we will need him when the overseas boys loose heart.

I have to agree with Clay80. He looked surprisingly comfortable at right back last night and his delivery from either flank is as good as anyone else at the club. We haven't spent all of the van Dijk money yet let alone any of the Sky money so, given that we're a bit short of wing backs at the moment, I'd keep him whatever is being offered by Fulham.

Before this thread fades out...I asked myself ..Have we found another two-footed full back in Matt Targett? Some players are considered to be specialist full backs, but historically it wasn't so unusual. Grandads will recall the likes of the 1950's Peter Sillett, John Gregory and Len Wilkins could play on either flank, and the former Welsh captain Stuart Williams came to us aged 32... and happily played both roles in the promotion season 65-66.

(For me) the legendary Jimmy Gabriel (in the late 1960's ) would play in any shirt number Ted Bates gave him and DAJFU without failure.

Denis Hollywood and Ken Jones both played RB and LB although not always with success.
Joe Kirkup and the late-lamented young Steve Mills both showed skills in both positions, as did former England captain Mick Mills (after being coaxed to the Dell by Lawrie Mac.)

Saints youth scheme in the 1980's saw the likes of Reuben Agboola, Manny Andruszewski and Steve Baker all playing both sides of the pitch, and Jeff Kenna was a firm choice at RB before Jason Dodd came in and Kenna moved over to play LB for Saints and Rep. Ireland.

So ..are two-footed players out of fashion nowadays , or do they simply not get the chance to play? Perhaps another reason for us to hold onto Matty a tad longer before we can see how the season pans out.
He may not turn out to be another Gareth Bale, but selling him for £15-20 million may seem a giveaway deal in 5 years time.
