Clyne In England Squad
Thursday, 2nd Oct 2014 13:26

Nathaniel Clyne has been selected for the England squad with ex Saint Luke Shaw relegated to the U21 side.

Nathaniel Clyne has won his first call up for his country joining fellow Saint Fraser Forsterin Roy Hodgson's squad for next weeks Euro 2016 Qualifiers against San Marino & Estonia.

His inclusion comes at the same time as Luke Shaw is dropped down to the U21 squad after a slow start to his Manchester United career that has seen him play only once in the United first team all season.

Hodgson's squad is top heavy with midfielders meaning that at the back he has opted for only six defenders, two of those Kieran Gibbs and Leighton Baines are left backs whilst Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka and John Stones are primarily central defenders, although Stones was played at left back in the last International.

So the path is clearly open for Clyne to in his first cap for his country and with his great attacking form for Saints, in a game like San Marino surely Hodgson will opt for attacking prowess rather than the defensive option Stones would offer.

Joining Shaw in the U21 squad is Calum Chambers with Hodgson showing that moving to a big club does not neccessarily man your chances of playing for England are improved.

Good luck to Nathaniel Clyne, hopefully his head will not be turned by some of the Bill Big Boots he will meet in the squad who will be keen to show him their wage packets.

Looks like ManU has signed the Saints physio just to get Shaw in shape!
Nick, your concerns of the summer are coming through! We better lock the tea lady into a long-term contract! But then again, contracts mean nothing, and she'll just refuse to make any tea because her "kettle is already in Liverpool"

Brilliant news-was excellent all of last season and better than the three defenders that left. Will never forget witnessing that goal at the Emirates either.

Leighton Baines played at left back against Switzerland with Phil Jones at right back. John Stones switched from centre back to right back when Phil Jagielka replaced Jones.

Clear evidence if you needed it that playing well and regularly for a decent team is far better than struggling at a "big" club. A Man U shirt only gets you so far. Well done Nat and well done Roy.

Well done Nat! Very much deserved! Hopefully you will see that playing for a "big"club does not guarantee you a place in the England squad, however playing brilliant football does, even if you play for an "unfashionable" team. When you see RL, ask him what it is like sitting on the bench most of the time?

About time he got a call up, he is the best right back in the premier league by a mile. Looking forward to coming back to the UK, pencilled in Spurs at home and Sunderland away, can't wait, missed seeing the Saints
