Deadline day is here - and the underwhelming level of expectation is probably as low as it has ever been for fans of Derby County.

There are reports of contract negotiations taking place to sign striker Conor Sammon from Kilmarnock and the likelihood is that defender Daniel Ayala from Liverpool will join on loan for the rest of the season by the 11pm cut-off.

Other than that, Nigel seems to have his fingers crossed Sven will let him take Martyn Waghorn on loan, so the player can get a game every week rather than play from the bench.

Last minute news is pretty scarce, with the odd rumour on message boards that a mystery player will sign on loan who has been with the Rams before (Michael Tonge perhaps?) alongside the odd name mentioned here and there, but with no substantiating evidence.

It also seems as RamZone reported on Saturday Dean Moxey may be on his way to Crystal Palace, which for me is of concern with little cover for that position already. It seems an odd transfer if true, especially as the player is one who genuinely gives his all.

Rams fans have seen some dark days and the current situation does not match the weekly disgrace of the Premiership capitulation or the financial destruction caused by ‘the three amigos’ but instead it is investment lethargy that has me and other fans feeling quite flat about what can be an exciting day in a club's season.

Don’t get me wrong, I want our club to invest wisely, be financially sensible and ensure its survival for years to come. I would also like to see our consortium of owners, who are all in their own right very rich individuals, invest a little extra in the club and take the Championship by the scruff of the neck.

We are only 3 wins off the play-offs and even at this point of the season a little more quality in the squad, we could easily trigger a run to make a fist of finishing in the top six.

Instead it feels the club are resigned to attempt an improvement on last season and hope for the best with a squad that have come up short after a promising start.

Today should be all about glueing one's self to news-sites waiting for a newsflash. If on deadline day, the best a news service can offer is re-hashes of news reported and re-reported from various angles, with 3 day-old quotes to try and make it sound fresh, then you can tell little has happened.

Already today I have read so called breaking news that RamZone and other news outlets reported days ago - but really with the level of excitement GSE are providing in terms of transfers I suppose it is hard to blame them for trying to offer something.

The media need stories to fill the news section for each club and frankly, we have given them little to talk about other than selling our traitorous leading scorer to a SPL club for a mere pittance of what he would normally be worth.

I suppose in that respect it’s a normal transfer period for the Rams then… Huddlestone, Rasiak and Hulse anyone?

The best case scenario would be the addition of Sammon, Ayala & Waghorn by the end of the day. Adding them to the signing of Davies makes the transfer window look like a reasonably successful period, rather than the disaster it was looking like at various stages.

In saying that, no matter how it ends, the same problems remain.

We sell easier than we buy or loan - plus the Rams seem to love leaving things to the last minute. Sure, the Davies scoop was completed early enough but protracted interest in player and wishing and hoping for player fitness and availability for loans does not seem like a confident way to strengthen a squad.

I do not blame Nigel Clough, as frankly, how can we?

The board are walking a tightrope, as more and more fans are becoming disillusioned in the way they allow their manager to shop like a beggar in a thrift shop, alongside their assertions they are aiming to get the club into the Premier League with long term budgeting and stable success.

It is hard to see how the current regime, operating the way that they are will ever be able to deliver the first, in order that they can then deliver the second.

Every single Rams fan hopes they prove me wrong.

pkay_brum added 14:13 - Jan 31 I would like the current board to explain why it is that DCFC partners and fellow-GSE investment group members are putting $$$$hundreds of millions into their preferred 'expansion franchises', whilst a potentially very big asset, what could readily become an established EPL club in Derby, is still forced to piddle about at the low end of the transfer market and tread water yet again in the second tier?
