Yes, George Best that's what I thought. It's interesting how times change events like Remembrance Day. In my youth, with many families including my own, having lost loved ones relatively recently in WW2, it was a very solemn occasion and I can remember being in Trafalgar Square when everything and everyone stopped still and silent at 11 am on the day. It was just the one day then, the Sunday, now it seems to last two or three weeks.
I commented on this on the match thread. Some folk were still clapping when the Last Post was played and I even had to politely ask some supporters behind me to stop chatting.
I think it was because the names of players from both sides who died in the wars were read out before the 'silence' and it has become increasingly common to honour the deceased with applause. Nothing wrong with that, but it was not appropriate for a Remembrance Day ceremony.
I remember when two fans got engaged (i.e. he proposed marriage and she accepted) on the match day centre circle at LR. This was done to the accompanying song from the crowd, " you don't know what you're doing!"
One thing I discovered was that when I had a blood test for PSA, one shouldn't have a lot of physical exercise, especially sex on the morning of the test. I'll say no more.
If only there existed a video of that special day in 1975 so I could relive the occasion when I (in the company of the incipent and current Mrs Hants) went wild at the Baseball Ground. Gimlet eyes and directed muttering from surrounding Rams' fans.
Last week. I saw 'Redlands' at Chichester Festival Theatre, based on the Jagger/ Richards/ Faithfull drugs bust in 1967. Very entertaining evening and the cast made a good fist of playing the Stones' version of this Marvin Gaye classic: "Can I get a witness?"
edit: don't seem to be able to copy link? ...thanks rbee!
I tried so hard to get him a Happy birthday thread yesterday, perhaps I shouldn't have been so subtle. Anyway, I'll join you in wishing Norf many happier for his big birfday.
