New striker?
at 22:33 6 Jul 2012

Yep, the next twist will be who the the new Captain will be. Could it be one of the new Academy boys? I know that's a stupid comment but it seems anything unexpected can happen at Derby. I bet morale is going to be really good in the dressing room this season.

I'm wondering if the "family reasons" that Davies speakers about is the reality that his wife sees the writing on the wall, as we all do, and that is, if you want to play in a promotion team stop playing for a team that is obviously going nowhere and get out.

I guess we are all hoping that in the next few weeks we are going to be shocked and amazed at one or two wonderful signings but is it really going to happen? Do we have amazing talent scouts at Derby scouring Europe, or the Americas or are they just scouring Alfreton, Macclesfield, Littleover, or the heady heights of Burton?

Derby are just another Crewe Alexander
at 22:58 5 Jul 2012

Well my friend, out goes Shackell. But not to worry, they say it's to strengthen the squad, but hey, the good news is NC says we have Buxton, woohoo, that's it then, there's the answer to NC's cunning plan.

Nigel Clough is either a brilliant tactical manager and we get in the top six this next season, or we struggle because he's totally incompetent. The curtain on the stage is about to open on this farce (Comedy Of Errors) and declare the answer as the seasonal drama unfolds.

I'm sure all Derby's players are so excited to know that their future is secure playing for Derby. Not!

Hopefully, our one salvation might be that Glick will have enough clout at City to encourage their manager to let Derby have one or two of their fringe players to join us on loan to keep up their fitness, but I doubt we could afford the wages unless a really good discount wage deal is made. I'm sure that will be seen as a ridiculous comment. Oh well, just dreaming.

Off to check now to see what brilliant signing NC might make with his surplus cash. Could it be a top seasoned scorer or just another untried youngster from a lower division. Oh joy! It looks like a boy from Crewe.

Robinson & Shackell?
at 17:23 5 Jun 2012

Interesting optimism taffyram. I hope you are right but everyone has their price even those who don't kick a ball, ask Glick.

If, and I mean IF, Robinson and Shackell stay, I think it will be interesting to see what happens in the transfer window come January. Davies might still be with us until January as well in the hope he scores lots of goals to boost his price. Did Robinson just have a purple patch this last season? Perhaps January will be a very interesting month.

Could Derby become another Crewe Alexandra?
at 16:30 5 Jun 2012

Let's face it Derby are looking as though they they could become another Crewe Alexandra. I've decided to remove my rose coloured glasses and realize that other clubs with "real" ambition are going to always cream off our better players, and even Directors. I'm not being fooled any longer that we are breeding good young players just for us. Every one of them will be watching what happens to our better players and could end up emulating their elders by not re-signing their contracts when the time comes. Yes we'll have the likes of Ball and other up and coming players for a while but never long enough to get us up into the Premier division.

If we do find that we lose Shakell, Robinson, Davies etc., just accept that the owners know Derby will never be good enough for promotion so they intend to make hay while the sun shines and capitalize on the money making machine of creating good players for other teams. All investors want a healthy return on their money, and sooner rather than later, so can we blame them?

Don't we all look at how our own invested money is doing? I know I do, I watch the DOW Jones every day. Can we expect Derby's investors to be any different?

It would be great if Cloughie really does have the business acumen to sell and buy better players with the money and move onwards and upwards each year but he is no different to Glick, other clubs will be taking him from Derby next, or is he deemed to be just another Dario Gradi of the Championship by grooming players for other teams?

It's possible, but then again Nigel would sell him a year after buying him as either not being good enough or having an academy youngster in the wings to replace him.

It is after all an interesting list. Obviously Connor Doyle is better than anyone on his list of 5.

Who is now surplus to requirements?
at 18:38 22 May 2012

Well, adding Steve Davies to the equation is a real surprise. So what can we now expect for next season? Selling one of our best strikers to Leeds, or Blackpool, or some other top club with REAL intentions of getting out of this division is going to be really interesting.

This next 12 months is either going to prove that Nigel and company are absolutely brilliant in their management tactics, or absolutely stunningly pathetic and have no clue whatsoever, and have totally lost the plot.

Am I wrong in thinking that this is so reminiscent of Black Adder where Baldric (AKA Nigel Clough) comes running in to Tom Glick with the famous words "I have a cunning plan". We of course all know the results of the cunning plan.

This time next year I expect more recruits to be put on the "For Sale" list having shown their new found capabilities and wanting to get away to a club that is seriously wanting to get out of this division. If Steve Davies feels Nigel's club isn't going anywhere, by wanting to leave, what chance will we have of keeping other up and coming talent when they see Steve Davis getting promotion with another club?

Please, please, tell me I am wrong! I want to be able to say so much that this really is a cunning plan that is actually going to succeed and this time next year we will be somewhere in the top 6, or am I dreaming?

Well, there goes Connoly and Jones according to Cloughies statement, plus he added two more from the reserves. Let's see how many first teamers he now agrees with from the list.

I don't see him recruiting anyone from the relegated teams. He seems to always leave those to other managers. I'm sure Leeds will get most of those. I just hope we get at least one surprise this summer to whet our appetites.

Ryan Connolly and Chris Jones are only youngsters but then again so are others that have recently stepped up to the plate and look promising for the future so can anyone tell me if these are worth hanging on to or should they be included in the mix to make room in the budget for a good strikers wage?

Frank Fielding is an interesting thought. Why is it that I cringe when I hear him speak? I'm not actually bowled over by listening to him but then again he's employed to keep the ball out of the net and not to be also a good orator.

Some players will have to make way for Summer signings.

My short list, and those who we know are going, would be:
Connor Doyle
Miles Addison
Lee Croft
Chris Maguire
Nathan Tyson
Ross Atkins
Paul Green

Should any others be on the list?

Don't get too excited he'll no doubt be sold six months prior to the end of his contract, as will any other young player that shows any sign of being worth more than Derby can afford to pay them. Don't be fooled by Nigel's comments that they are grooming players for the future. It is in fact a true statement, but he doesn't mean for Derby County. I fear we will slowly become the Crewe Alexander of the Championship, a club that provides players for other teams with more financial guts as we continue in mediocrity somewhere around 14th place or less.

As more clubs go under, one has to wonder where all their players from those clubs will end up. I'm sure there will be lots of better clubs than ours looking for decent players from those clubs. Derby seems to like players from Scottish clubs, and there might be some decent players at Pompey.

Any thoughts on who would benefit Derby from those clubs? With what Derby currently has I'm sure any would fit in, but seriously, if we had the money, who would do a good job for us?

Coaching Staff
at 17:39 28 Feb 2012

I have a question. I don't know much about Derby's coaching staff. Can anyone tell me if any of them, other than Nigel, had much success as players? If they did play football were any gifted in creativity when they were on the pitch to be able to now pass on their skills of the game as coaches to Derby's current youngsters?

Going nowhere

The other day I was watching an exciting game of football on Telly here in USA. The players knew how to use the ball, they knew when to release it, and then they not only knew who to pass it to they actually had the ability to ensure the ball got to that person.

After that game I watched Derby County hoping for much of the same thing. Oh my goodness! What a difference that game was.

I'm as confused as you are Mark. We not only need inventive and intelligent players but we also need inventive and intelligent management staff.

I'm sure Ol' Big Ed would have said "If you can't keep the ball and know what to do with it when you've got it you won't get in my team".

The coaching staff have to go. There is absolutely no inventiveness whatsoever from dead ball situations. Their only logic seems to be "hoof the ball into the crowd of players and lets see what the outcome will be". Does any of Nigel's staff have coaching badges? They don't even "sound" intelligent when they get on camera. At least Nigel sounds as though he knows what he is doing even if his logic rarely pays off.

My Crystal Ball
at 16:14 28 Feb 2012

To a large extent I can see Nigel's problem with managing the books, but what I can see ahead is that when his policy of waiting for his youngsters to mature, two or three years will slip by. After those year have gone, and if those players become of great value as he hopes, their contracts will have expired. They will then fall prey to all those clubs that have seen them grow and we try and start all over again with the same policy of grooming the youngsters. So the bottom line is that we never get out of the Championship, and that's if we have managed to stay in it while these youngsters mature.

Clough's logic is there but the reality is we'll end up losing our better youngsters as the years roll by.
