James McClean 05:53 - Aug 7 with 2910 viewsexiled_dictator

Championship Wigan are close to winning the £1.5million race for Sunderland’s Republic of Ireland winger James McClean.

Latics hope to beat promotion rivals Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers to the speedy wide-man, who is out of Paolo Di Canio’s plans at the Premier League side.

McClean made an explosive start to his career with the Black Cats under then-boss Martin O'Neill.

But he struggled to match those feats last term as the Wearsiders flirted with relegation — and now Di Canio is willing to let him go.

The Latics, aiming to bounce back into the top flight at the first attempt while also playing in the Europa League as FA Cup winners, aim to tie up a deal as early as Wednesday.

Another one allegedly on the radar, or just in red top talk.

I don't believe the story for one minute.
Regardless of how good the player is, or how he would fit into the squad or whether he is the right type or not, this is just papertalk bullshyte.
For the past couple of years, since TF has taken over, every player who might have thought of leaving his club has been linked with us; from the very realistic to the completely mad. We did manage to sign players beyond where we were, no doubt, as well as players who we should never have signed simply because of what they have achieved. It would appear that the press are still playing their little games where if a player is either listed or has an offer made on them, then we are automatically linked despite it never have been discussed within the club, or amongst the supporters. The idea that the press can make transfers take place is just ridicoulas, but this doesn't stop them trying.

Of his pro IRA beliefs then no thanks

I think the grief/hassle he and his family would get at home justifies whether he wants to wear a poppy on not. A bad week in the British press is alot easier then a lifetime of grief back home. Cant see the issue here. Do English in Ireland lay wreaths or even care when Irish patriots are honoured? This was all blown out of proportion at the time. Everyone has different views and aslong as they are not too extreme we should respect them.

The fella came out with a pro IRA stuff on his twitter

For that reason alone I would be disgusted if he played for Rangers and if he is that against Britain etc why doesn't he f**k off to the motherland and play for some two bob Irish team or something

Just for the record, about 200,00 irishmen volunteered during in WW1, around half from the modern day Republic, and around 14,000 (from the Republic alone) were killed.

Rememberance day is not only about British soldiers, it is about all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, however mad it was.

Im not politically minded and not going to get into this whole area on here but opinions changed towards the British during this period (WW1). Brits are patriotic, Yanks are patriotic and Irish are patriotic etc etc etc. People fight for there country, there cause and that is evident the world over from the beginning of time(justified or not) the masses who call the IRA etc scum might have a different opinion had they been born Catholic on the other side of the water and same regarding Protestant.

I was born in London to Irish parents and moved back to Ireland when I was 11 I have experienced racism from both sides in England due to my Irish heritage and in Ireland because of my accent.

People are still very bitter about it all (especially on the Irish side) and especially where McClean was brought up.
