Well I read the story and have to ask, how the heck should anyone on here know?

Do you expect a brummie to know why Mumbles carnival doesn't happen anymore?

The most important bit I keep til last...why should I care? It's Birmingham news, it's not like anybody has been murdered, abused, kidnapped or called a sheep shagger.

Are you Irish? Is that why you care, are you from Kilkenny?

Hang on, I shouldn't have replied, I'm not learned...where is Sirjohnalot? he's our learned friend!

Pity our national day wasn't as well advertised and celebrated like the Irish is ,always found it strange how many Welsh pretend their Mick's for a day ,perhaps the op could explain ?

Not being back in wales for a long time on a March 1st, is it the case that it’s not such a big thing any more?

That would be a real shame.

I still go to work with a leek badge and every year someone gives me daffs which is a lovely gesture.

The march was cancelled for " safety reasons" and no one including me knows what they are in this democratic land and the BBC will not say either.

Perhaps it is to safeguard Irish livers.?

Primary Schools still celebrate the day but the half day off after morning lessons has stopped . Nice to see the adults celebrate but I'm afraid to say that's a rarity .

Well ….. you are going to love this.

St Patrick is a Bank Holiday in the north of Ireland.
St Andrew is a Bank Holiday in Scotland since 2006.
St George is not a BH in England.

So what about St Davids day ?
Must be a BH right ? Wrong.

St Davids day has been Welsh Govt policy ‘We've repeatedly asked the UK government for the Senedd to have the powers to make St David's Day a bank holiday, and it's disappointing to see these requests continue to be refused’. Even Senedd Tories support it.

But uk govt say no … ‘The UK Government has justified giving Scotland and Northern Ireland an extra bank holiday while denying one to Wales because they have “different histories, economic, social, cultural and legal systems”.

So its inconsistent bollox, file under HS2 bollox.

To be clear the Welsh Govt were not asking for an extra day but rather just move one if the May BHs.

You might think that Westminster does not want to encourage us to feel more proudly welsh.
Some local councils in Wales have just done it and given staff the day off.
Concerts, sporting events … fun, laughter, singing… good heavens no, we cant risk that.

BH for England winning the Euro’s (you have to laugh mun) was on the cards, no probs at all.

Corbyn suggested all 4 nations get all 4 days off.
England Wakes have least number of BHs in Europe.

I can't say I'm an expert but I do live quite close to a primary school and from what I've observed that tradition seems to have stopped ,if there are hats then they tend to be the small cockle hat ,the boys seem to have adopted wearing the national rugby shirt .
It is a genuine pity that the day seems to be overshadowed by the Irish although I've yet to see cudgels being wielded , so far.

It doesn’t say exactly why, but Birmingham City Council effectively declared themselves bankrupt last year and have to make enormous savings. The event is big and I’d imagine that while the organisers would be shelling out a lot of the money they’ve raised, they'd have previously been supported by the City Council who’d have done the street clearing up and maybe some crowd control barriers free of charge. Thousands of people of the @@@@ is a lot of extra head work.
Maybe the Council have turned around and, given the financial constraints told the organisers they have to pick up the entire tab, including for example road closure orders, crowd control barriers, street cleaning, highways teams etc etc. It’s an expense that would soon add up especially on a Sunday with OT implications etc.

Incorrect , the Educational needs of the children of Wales are under the initial control of Cardiff "educational "minister ,he and his minions determine the policy and the local authority specify the school calendar year. Even when we had half a day off it was never a national holiday I thought you'd have known that but then again .

It is probably a business friendly move. When I was working in engineering we had deadline and needed to get things done with worku.g between regional offices. If England and Wales had separate days off that would be two days of unnecessary delays.

Good morning sir,
A Welsh Regimental tradition as well, when on Dai's day wherever we were instead of being rudely awaken with the sound of " hands off ++cks on with socks" we were awoken with a nice mug of hot tea laced with rum served by the platoon officer accompanied behind him carrying a rather large tea urn a snarling sergeant major , then a sports day followed by dinner with the battalions' youngest recruits standing on a chair each chomping on a full sized leek and swigging from a tankard full of ale , to round it off and if possible a showing in the camp cinema of Zulu . "We showed them didn't we sarge"

I will make sure they feel guilty

Anyone who pretends to be Irish when they are not is an idiot.

Especially Americans. My family are mostly Irish and I feel no affinity to the country at all.

It’s a bit like these middles class fools with rags on their heads waving a Palestine flag every weekend. It’s pathetic.

That of course doesn’t prevent me from having an opinion on the actual thing they protest for, and the same for what people call far right. People are fools.

I think the Irish have an incredible history and one to be proud of , as have we , maybe its because we don't shout from the rooftops proclaiming who we are that we're paid lip service to once a year , even mock Irish folk seem to enjoy fantastic public displays proclaiming who they " are" or not as the case maybe.

The middle class people are defending a principle. This principle is you cannot steal someone else's land on the pretext of the writings in an ancient holy book.

We today can ether make a settlement of extend the grief even further with additional ethnic cleaning. The Israeli move the Palestinians out of the fields into Gaza forming large refugee camp. The camp is located on potentiality valuable real estate. Trump want the refugee camp as well.

Even displaced Muslims have rights. Hamas and Likud are both odious but the principles of a just and fair peace remain.

No one has explained what the "safety issues" were in Birmingham. It could be the police have declined to attend or manage the event.
