First Cinema you saw a film in? 08:50 - Sep 4 with 11237 viewsRangersDave

This could be helpful for me,

As a hobby, i travel round the country, visiting, and photographing (both externally and where possible, internally) old cinema buildings.

So far i have visited and photographed 1452 of these wonderful buildings (am on facebook as "old cinema buildings (UK & ROI)" i have travelled from lands end to Inverness, and Dover to Holyhead.....

Anyway, the question is 'what was the first 'proper' old school type cinema you saw a film in?

Mine? Palace Cinema, High Wycombe for 'Thunderbirds are go!'

The Odeon in Salisbury, which I suspect you've long since ticked off given your interest.

Rayners Lane, still an impressive building even if it isn't a cinema anymore.

The first I remember is this (closed 1986) for 'The Black Cauldron' re-run.

It wasn't my first visit, I vaguely remember leaving SB Odeon or ABC which closed earlier (I also vaguely remember leaving the ABC when it was a pub)

Remember going to Saturday morning pictures at a cinema up the road from there, on Porchester Road I think but only info I can find is it was closed in 1964 which is odd because I was going there in the mid to late 60’s.

Porchester Hall possibly, down from the old Whiteleys I think, anyone recall it?

Somewhere in Brighton (we were visiting grandparents in Seaford) in 1964 or thereabouts for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was the first film my mother had ever seen as well.

Kilburn Classic.

Kilburn State and Grange were magnificent buildings as a small boy, especially the former. The Classic, not so much.

My old man was manager of the Kilburn State in the late 50s. Not a lot of people know that!

Barnet Odeon - a venue which I suspect our very own Mr. Whittingham is also quite familiar with.
No idea what my first film would have been, but it would have been 1971, and I distinctly remember the Wurlitzer organ being raised up from the bowels of the place during the interval, with the area's closest equivalent to Liberace giving it his utmost.

Either the Odeon Westbourne Grove (knocked down and now flats) or the ABC at the bottom of Queensway, now a LeylandSDM DIY shop (used to be TGI Fridays) but at least the same building by the looks of things.

As mainstream films seemed to be released through only one of these two cinema operators, I was always visiting both.
