This.

And by its nature progressing in knockout tournaments isn’t something most managers have on their CV so replacements are hard to find.

Capello, arguably one of the best managers alive at the time couldn’t do it with England’s greatest ever squad (imo).

Capellos squad was the back end of the “ Golden generation “
Lots of players like Ferdinand, King, Carragher, Scholes , Beckham , Cole , Owen , Heskey were either injured, retired or past it , he never had a decent keeper either
That 2010 squad was lifting

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I was comparing league records as they’ve all managed league teams.
Can’t compare international records as only Southgate has managed internationally.
Far easier to get a high percentage win rate if you manage a top international team.
You’re not very good at this are you?

You’ve tied yourself in knots mate 😆

Enjoy Sunday if you can. Remember, lucky if he wins, shit if he loses 👍

The amount of berating an England Manager get is extreme

Every single one cops the flak

There is always massive expectation to win tournaments every major competition we enter but now that we always qualify, now that we progress through knockout games on a consistent basis, which we had not done for years, now it's lucky for the manager and it's just individual players showing their class.

If we lose, its the managers inability to make substitutions, having favourites and not giving others a fair chance and we only lose when we face a significant nation.

Well, my view Holland are generally always a significant footballing nation but when we won, I heard them described as many years away from being decent and Gareth was lucky once more.

Now we are in a final against one of the teams of recent decades - Spain - they have been quality throughout so am just wondering if we did win, what justification will thr nay sayers get to say its nothing to do with Southgate...

And will the Southgate haters, actually enjoy it if we win, because it would put an end to their Gareth Hating Voodoo Curse that they seem to very much enjoy !!!

Roll on Sunday !!

Graham Potter.
Wouldn’t be averse to Steven Gerrard if he had a decent coaching team behind him.
Tuchel or Pochettino but doubt they’d be interested.
Eddie Howe if Newcastle bin him off.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's an internal appointment and Lee Carsley gets promoted from the U21s.

Head coach for international football clearly quite different from club football.

Carsley turned down ROI head coaching job so he thinks he is in the running at least if not the favorite to take over if GS bails out .
Of course if England win it changes everything with the World Cup in America this time the TV exposure should be massive and he might stick around.
Can someone explain why Spain are hot favorites on Sunday I cannot see why.
England have savage experience and world class players who know how to handle the occasion and pressure.
Spain might be playing well but are way too young and inexperienced for a massive final IMO.
We all can agree on this point if England get ahead early they will go for the kill not like the last final.
England 3 Spain 1

Well Spain have won six out of six in the tournament and have done so playing exciting attacking football. So it's pretty clear to me why they're favourites.

Although it is a final so anything can happen.

Aside from their attacking riches Rodri is the fulcrum of the Spain team so if England can stop him, they have a chance.

Come on, man! Spain have looked way better than England. They've won six games compared to England's three.

That's not to say England can't win, but they will need to improve.

I think Carsley doesn't fancy having the eye of the storm jobs. Suspect he has zero interest in the England job.

There's a lot of talk about the mental strength, resilience, togetherness, unity of this squad and that contrasts a lot with what you used to hear of England squads where the Man Utd players hated the Liverpool players, the Spurs players hated the Arsenal players and everyone hated the Chels** players. Having your "star" players at big clubs abroad or lads stepping up from non-top 4 clubs like Palace hasn't hurt.

Jay Bothroyd got his one and only cap in 2010 under Capello.

That's one thing this squad has over all the other the last couple of decades.

The so-called 'golden generation' was torn apart internally because of all these club factions, caused mainly by SAF I think for the benefit of Man U but the fact it probably undermined England too was a Brucey bonus.

When the FA did it’s review into the international setup (that led to St George’s and all those elite couch courses) they stated they wanted to see a managerial conveyor belt through the England Youth set ups and into the first team.

Not saying you are wrong, but don’t be surprised!

Kind of makes sense. The Managers 'grows up' through the age categories along with the same players.

With the U21 team winning things and knocking on the door of the first XI, maybe it's time for Southgate to step aside whatever happens on Sunday.

This part is the biggest plus point for Southgate, and for me it's the overriding aspect of his legacy, as/when he steps down. To build and maintain the squad connection, that desire from the players to want to be part of this version of England, and the love and support from the fans as a collective rather than just their club players in a different shirt, has changed so much for the better.

In the context of his time as England manager, to have built up that culture and used it to take us to latter stages of major tournaments, he's up there as one of the best of all time - certainly in the last 30 years.

I don't think that negates any criticism of his preferred style, set up or way of playing though - especially in this tournament, and when it comes to actually winning a trophy. I think the game and his squad have outpaced him, and his tactics and game-management have held us back more than it's propelled us, but tournaments are all about winning and if he does that Sunday, he will go down as one of the all-time greats. Unquestionably.

Southgate would make a good politician. Keeps his emotions under control and rarely puts a foot wrong when interviewed.

Can’t deny England have had the rub of the green throughout this tournament. Would like to see the team let off the leash a bit, as we have only seen our potential for one 45 minute spell before crawling back into our defensive shell.

Fully expect us to soak up the pressure for most of the game and look for the occasional counter attack. We have the ability, but not the confidence or belief to take the game to them.

Holland took Argentina to penalties in the world cup. They are not and have never been an easy opponent.

As someone said on TV the other day England have 60 million managers. Southgate has his flaws but his results speak for themselves.

I watched Rio Ferdinand being interviewed earlier and he spoke about the so called golden generation and the club rivalries. He was very complimentary about how Southgate has brought everyone together. If he was a tactical genius too, he'd have the job until he dies.

International tournament football has felled so many great club managers in the past.

Southgate has put England on the map as an international force again, goes about it in a calm and considered manner, he has been fortunate to be manager at a time when English talent is in abundance, but you can't take away the fact he has got 2 Euro finals, a World Cup semi and quarter final under his belt. A big fingers crossed that tonight he will crown it all with the Euro 2024 title.

Statistically the greatest manager England have ever had, no question of that now. Not sure it’s always been the most watchable but he knows how to progress in a tournament which is something we have massively lacked.

This.

Southgate lost me when he played two defensive midfielders against Scotland at the last Euros. Pointless - should have utterly destroyed that bunch of second rate Championship players.

Against Italy in the final of that competition, he chose to sit back on a 1-0 lead instead of going for the second which would have killed them off.

He has an unnatural fascination with Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson.

He was STILL experimenting at this tournament and has not blooded any of the bench players.

He refuses to drop Kane or Bellingham irrespective of how badly they have been playing. It is not as though he has a weak bench - Eze, Watkins, Toney, Palmer, Gordon, Bowen - all absolutely justified a place in the squad and should be trusted. Yes, Kane is World Class, but he has been pony this tournament and both Toney and Watkins have looked better when they came on. Bellingham has an overhead kick to thank - good in the first game and absolutely anonymous in every game since.

Fell upon Mainoo after trying Trent and Gallagher - who'd have thought they would have failed?

Refused to give Wharton and game time - why take him?

The team is dull as fck to watch; the least appealing of all of the "big nations" at this tournament with the possible exceptions of Italy and France.

...and yet, here we sit, in ANOTHER final. Got to say, that is pretty good.

But, this is modern football, isn't it? JUST DON'T LOSE rather than score more than the oppo - isn't that the bland truth?

Can we go out yet?

Southgate’s biggest fan here, but I think the freshness he brought in last two tournaments is now stale.

May eat my words when we go out in 2026 to Birkina Faso but I think a new manager will bring fresh enthusiasm.
