My EPQ around the Championship and QPR 09:45 - Jun 6 with 1056 viewstxm660

Hello everyone, I am currently completing my Extended Project Qualification for sixth form, which I am going to focus primarily on the championship. I have decided on a title, being "Are EFL Championship owners gambling their futures to reach the Premier League?" which can also be changed/ altered over the coming months.
Within this qualification I have to include a case study. Being a QPR fan all my life, I thought it would be fitting to use the hoops as my case study, having quite a decent knowledge about my club I would say, reading a lot from this forum, however I am still unsure. I am aware that there are many other better, and more recent examples, such as Reading, Derby and Weds, who have proved to be very unsuccessful in terms of point deductions and obviously the Dai Yongge, but am still undecided. Any advice around this topic would be greatly appreciated, or any sources of information that could help would also be amazing. I have found financial reports of each club over recent years, as well as news articles etc, but anything else would be brilliant.
Thanks :)

I think we are a great example

Flabio & the Dwarf gambled and won but only by changing their tact.

Bungle gambled the clubs future to stay there. Failed.
Bungle gambled the clubs future to get back there. Won.
Bungle gambled the clubs future to stay there. Failed.

We'll never recover from that period of wanton spending with zero sustainable plan and minimal investment in infrastructure.

Bungle had the opportunity of a generation not once but twice and blew it by thinking money/spending equals success.

The Five Year Plan is a great starting point.
An example of egotistical owners failing and only eventually succeeding when they stepped back and put their faith in proper football people running the football side whilst they perused the bank sheet closely.

Good luck with your EPQ

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

The Five Year Plan?

Was that the sequel?

Not really my area but going back many years to when I did a dissertation in the economics of sport my advice would be to fire an email or social media message to some people who have been through it. I maybe emailed 100 experts either in Economics or those involved in the business side of the game and three pretty well-known people in football got back to me and gave up some time for a chat. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Great advice - I was going to make the same point that a case study really advances if you can get quotes from people involved. Worth trying people like Beard, Fernandes, Hoos - most people are actually nice and try to help and it would really move your project on, especially as tutors etc are often sceptical when popular hobbies like football etc are chosen. So it's a great way to stand out from the mundane.

When I did my dissertation in 1874, it was on horse racing and gambling, so I speak from ancient experience :-)

Thanks, will definitely have a look at that, seems like the perfect documentary to get my project going. I was looking into management of the club under Hoos, Fernandes and Ferdinand etc since being in the championship, but this looks like a much better example. Thanks :)

I will definitely look into contacting them, would love to get an insight from them. I have contacted a university professor that specialises in football business, so hopefully I will have some luck there as well. Must admit my tutor seemed really interested by my topic, but has tried to change it, so that it focuses on differences around the world, such as German clubs, all being co-operative ownership, as well as the fall of Oldham Athletic since the fews seasons they had in the Premier League in the early 90's. This topic just seems the most interesting, and talking about the club I support would be the most enjoyable as well. Thanks you for the advice :)

I’d also be a bit wary of letting your support influence your arguments. Might be worth looking into Bury as a recent example where it really went tits up and the lower down you go the more chance you’ll have of those you’re talking about showing an interest.
