Plans to make over 65's resit their test , strange then that most accidents are caused by kids having just passed their test ( age group 20 -29 ) , hence the high risk premium they have to pay along with a black box fitted.

Is over cautious actually dangerous?
Is driving under the influence of cannabis actually dangerous?

I agree with most of the rest.
Young people definitely take more risks and show off more. I was an idiot in my car at 17. Not proud of it, but I was very young in the head.
I had a 1 litre Nova as well, so stopping youngsters driving bigger engines won’t stop the dangerous driving around towns and villages, but may stop a very small percentage of young people unable to manage powerful cars.

No
Absolutely,it is.
It is all about reactions.
Smoke dope and your re@cations are impaired.
If you do so,stop it ,as I like our jousts

I’m looking at another car this morning

Reality !
The reality is that the younger the driver, the less they concentrate as they simply get in the car and assume they will get to their destination . Ergo, they cannot accept RTCs are not “ accidents”

But everyone mostly does the first 4 things, whether they are young or not.

You still haven’t grasped the fact that it’s not, or at least shouldn’t be, a young vs elderly debate. Your entitled baby boomer persecution complex is shining through here.

Let’s just say under 30s are responsible for 50% of accidents and pensioners 10%. To a rational mind, you put measures in place to reduce incidents in both demographics. To yours, you ignore the 10% because young people cause more crashes.

I’m in neither group, I’m in my 40s, been driving well over half my lifetime. There are currently no restrictions on me driving until the day I die, no matter my capacity as I get older. To me, that is wrong.

Would you voluntarily take another test or pay for an advanced driving course ?

What
So everyone drives around munching a burger and coke then texts .
Where the fork do you live
The graveyards and dust bowl in the sky are full of people that thought driving was easy and that having a snack, drink or smoke doesn’t distract

Your attitude proves my point perfectly.

Think, stay safe and remember trees don’t move if you hit them.
Moreover,if you drive into a ditch ,doped, yiu will find it harder to get out of the car .

By the way, skin stinks when a car explodes . It’s messy and it lingers ,for a lifetime.

Ok but that’s arguable.

Cannabis may actually make some drivers better and able to notice more on the road, as it enhances your senses.
Medical cannabis is now a thing in this country and it is not illegal to drive after using your medication, as long as it doesn’t impair you too much.
So really, you can be over the prescribed limit, as long as you can pass a sobriety type test.

As for the over cautious drivers…how is that dangerous?

I’m not on about texting.

But driving whilst having a burger and coffee, with music blasting, yes. You have never eaten or listened to loud music while behind the wheel?

Never eaten ,no,nor drunk a can at the wheel. No
Driven when music can be heard 3 streets away ,no
Driven doped,no.
Driven whilst smoking. Yep,as @ 17 yr old but I was @ tw@t then ,as I was when I drive after two pints of Double Diamond.
You learn in life
Lighting a ciggie in a car whilst driving means you take your eyes off the road albeit briefly. In that nano second you can be slammed by a 50 ton Polish lorry the driver of which is watching a video on his phone .

Get it yet?

I ll stay around for a bit ,if you like.

I’ve given too many death messages ,sifted through body parts and gone to too many PMs to be objective. That’s true also.

Sorry to hear about what you had to go through.

But ifighting a cigarette at the wheel is so dangerous, so is changing the radio channel or continuously having to keep checking your speedo.

I’ve made my views on that pretty clear. I don’t think anybody should have to take another driving test. It’s not about ability to drive, it’s about physical capacity that deteriorates with age.

I’d happily take tests on my reaction times, eyesight and hearing every two years. Wouldn’t you?

No need to feel sorry. It’s what most police offices have to do,like it or not.

In answer to your question , no I wouldn't want to partake in such an exercise , have you started doing your biannual exercise if not why wait until your in you're 60's how about across the board for everyone ? some on here openly admit that taking drugs makes them safer whilst driving , not sure what crack he's smoking and I don't know his age but I'd hazard a good guess he ain't in his 70's.

That’s exactly the point. You probably didn’t need glasses or hearing aids 20/30/40 years ago.

It’s not a purge on over 65s. It’s checking people are still physically capable of driving safely.

Opticians decide if eyesight is up to it, not some arbituary age limit

Eyesight, hearing - using whatever glasses/contects/hearing aids etc people would drive using. Reaction speed. There’s probably more, but that kind of thing.

I don’t see any benefit in making people parallel park and do three point turns.

Three point turns are no longer required for tests

That’s exactly what I’m advocating. Eye tests, hearing tests etc.

Whatever the arbitrary age limit, all you’ve got to do is prove you can see, hear and react and you crack on.

When I did my test I had to read a number plate from a certain distance. Really basic stuff like that would do.

The last eye test I had on one of those letter board things, after I had read confidently to a certain point, the optician said you've already passed the DVLA required eye test for being fit to drive.

After I left, I wondered if I'd failed the driving eyesight test, would they be obliged to inform the DVLA ?

I didn’t think I had to. I assumed you realised this is a hypothetical discussion about a testing system that doesn’t exist.

With regard to the "constantly sniping" comment, It's because it's true, some people keep on about the burden of the older generation, almost the to point of feeling guilty for not dying earlier to save the NHS and money on pensions.

A good 80% of drivers would fail their test if they took it today
An advanced course would both terrify and destroy their egos

I don’t think anybody would disagree with that. As far as I can see, nobody on this thread has advocated resitting the normal test, let alone an advanced one.

Proving people still have the physical capability to drive safely is a different thing.
