A fantastic player who always played with his head up. I was also fortunate enough to see him play live a couple of times. Days like that you never forget.

RIP lovely man you will be greatly missed.

Like Onehunglow I just saw BC in the flesh in one (FA Cup) game in January 1969 when Man Utd won 1-3 at Exeter City. What a fantastic footballer and true gentleman he was. The 1966 England World Cup win has to go down in large part to him.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but the inside forward who gave Exeter the lead that day - Alan Banks - is still alive and has a good story of his own. With 6 goals in 8 first team games as a Merseyside youngster, the fact that he didn't get his contract renewed must be one of the harshest decisions in Liverpool youth football history. He went on to be Exeter's leading goalscorer for many a season, as Swans fans of a certain vintage may remember.

I am reliably informed my uncle and grandad took me to Northampton v Man Utd in 1970.
Charlton played. Best scored six.

I don’t remember it at all.

United won 8-2.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

I can remember as a youngster watching Bobby on TV, on "Double Your Money" with Hughie Greene.

He won the jackpot answering questions on pop music.

It was not long after the Munich air crash.

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

Mrs. Winston was vaguely related to him. Her grandmother was his mother's cousin or something like that. All her dad's family came from the same neck of the woods.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Absolutely, proud to say I saw him play, he was simply superb, and he was playing for the opposition! Also a true gentleman, always so humble, a great servant to our nation. RIP Sir Bobby.

I remember the time when travelling in my teens, when I'd meet people who could not speak English who would instantly say "Bobby Charlton"to you when they discovered you were British.

I saw him at the end of his playing career, he certainly had an impact far and wide.

Great footballer, modest man RIP.

Dad missed him (& his brother) winning the World Cup due to working down the pit.

& everyone seems to say a thoroughly decent human being.

RIP.

The County Ground was one of just a couple of 3-sided grounds back in the day. However, I think I recall hearing that Northampton Town erected temporary terracing on the cricket pitch side for that game. It was a big deal then - as I suppose it still is now - when Man Utd was drawn away at a lower league ground.

If I could remember I would tell you 😂

I’ve looked back on that game and it seems 27,000 was the attendance. So you are more than likely right.

A bit like when abroad anywhere now, you say you are Welsh, and they all say Gareth Bale.
Or in Italy, they all say John Charles.

I don’t think i saw Bobby Charlton live. RIP fella.
