Sunak doesn’t give two hoots by the look of it.
He has been asked to promote HVO as a straight replacement for diesel, 94% cleaner, but won’t discuss it.
He just wants the tax from diesel.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Who is "we" who allowed privatisation? Again I'd say it wasn't the working class people but the rich and powerful, the ruling elites who already had the largest slice of the pie but still want evermore of it.

People buy stuff from China because they can afford it. On a personal level we look closely and try hard not to buy from China but a few things slip through.

The world is in a rotten place and who can change it? As long as the ruling elites are allowed to get away with their behaviour, nothing will change. And change is what we need.

I'm starting to become a rebel!

They will all be off to Davos soon to conspire in October. Sunak and Starmer are both part of it.

What a great thread. Loads of good points being made.

Of course there’s a huge natural element to it but it nuts to deny human impact. That argument is done.

I also think we should be careful citing India and China as examples of why it’s pointless us trying. It’s a bit hypocritical when we’ve moved so much of our manufacturing out there and we import so many of their goods.

The bottom line is there are too many of us and we live completely, and massively unsustainably.

It doesn't matter where things are made really life has become too easy and cheap for most people. We wear clothes from unsustainable cotton, eat basically battery farmed beef and just crack on without any thought.

We should not be able to buy a fast food burger for a quid, when most of the world don't earn that in a day, we shouldn't be able to buy 6 eggs for £1.25 when the production of them it decimates an ecosystem, we shouldn't be able to buy clothes to wear once and chuck in the bin.

We need to pay more for less, but the greedy need to be less greedy and spread the wealth. It ain't going to happen though.

This is what we're used too and nobody wants to go backwards.

I agree with this. My biggest gripe is electrical products. In years gone by if an item broke you got it repaired, now it is cheaper to just replace. Surely it would be cheaper to have a government led initiative/subsidy in place to repair electrical items than have to recycle/dispose of them. That doesn't include the benefit for the environment.

HVO 10% more expensive than diesel guess you happy to pay that. How much farmland is needed to produce all this vegetable oil.

Less than is used to farm beef, plants don't produce methane and absorb carbon dioxide.

We need to use less fuel too.

I thought that change had been made and the right to repair had been put into law, in some way?

Scotia, while I agree with what you say when you get to the last bit about going backwards, I cannot say it would be going backwards, not if it protects our future.

Isn't it the fact that we will have to take a big step backwards to take bigger steps forwards?

Not that we will see any benefits in our lifetime, It will take centuries at least to lower any atmospheric co2 levels, if indeed that is desirable to plant life

Our 1% of CO2 emissions will have little effect until the 4 countries that are the World 's largest polluters act. They are in no particular order China, India, Russia and the USA.

They won't though, Those countries are more concerned with ensuring fuel security rather than following some green policies that are far from certain to work

I thought there was something in the pipeline too.

The problem is, electric and electronic goods are built to fail not to last. When one thing goes wrong out of warranty it is better to buy a new one than repair the old. It won’t be long til something lease goes wrong if you don’t and you end up throwing good money after bad. I don’t like doing it myself but I’ve been stung by not doing so.

You're right Cat - it's not really going backwards, ultimately it's self preservation, but the benefits won't be seen in the short term. And even in the medium term the benefits will only really be "well it could have been a lot worse" and difficult to quantify.

We're fixated on short term growth, of everything, from national economies and individual bank balances to clothes in wardrobe. It's human nature to want more for less. That's why doing something about it is so unpopular.

our 1% of 0.4% of 0.4% of co2 in the atmosphere won't a thing.

Why dont we start with a crisis that is undeniable and effects everyone. Our rivers are being used as a dumping ground for chemicals sewrage and plastics and being poisened in open sight. I was coming back in to Swansea marina after fishing on a high tide last month the ammount of debris that had washed down was heartbreaking. Why there is not a national outrage on the scale of climate beggars belief.

You are right, CO2 gets all the coverage. CO2 is part of the natural order of things, it can be dealt with. Loss of species is irreversible as is microplastic pollution.

Something needs to be done, absolutely.

The biggest problem in Wales is agriculture but the Dwr Cymru need to sort their act out too.

Extinction is also part of the natural order of things. Most of the species that have ever existed no longer do so. It's going to happen whether humans are here or not.

Completely agree about microplastics and the general theme though. Regardless of whether the CO2 "crisis" is man made or not, there are no downsides as a species to trying to live a cleaner, less polluting existence whilst not burning through every resource as if it's all infinitely replaceable.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Yes, pollution is a completely different matter. C02, is desirable for plants and crops
