I think it's going to look quite like Warburton's first summer, where you've got a squad that's collapsed the season before (under McClaren that time), a squad propped up by loans, and a squad with lots of players we can no longer afford to keep. We did 16 in and out that summer, I reckon we'll be pushing past that number this summer once you count the loans being returned.

Yes I think you are right in what you say. I would like us to sign that Girona striker who put four past Real Madrid this week. None of our Premier League teams can score 4 against them. Sadly he will probably be too expensive for us...

I know your big pitch here atm is unfailing, unflapable optimism, but we're getting excited about spending half a million quid on Richards now?

Why not? We're committed on the money front, and he clearly has got plenty of talent.
I admit his grasp of common sense might need some work, but he wouldn't be the first talented 20 year old of whom that was true.
Besides, we like "mavericks" at LR, don't we?

Good thread this...
my penny worth...I must admit that GA was not in my first five choices of manager - but he's here and we have to back him. I think if we give him some time and some personal changes, it will be a fairer opportunity in judging him.
I don't think Willock will stay, and tbh, I would be really surprised if we get anymore than 500k based on his hamstrings and the fact there is only a year left on contract. Willock strikes me as a player that has believed his own hype - much like BOS and Manning. I don't blame those players for taking advantage, and it's difficult to hold people against their will especially if their heads are being turned. Tend to agree with E15, Taylor Richards could play a great part in next season. As could any other finds that GA gets from lower divisions... that is what he excelled at with WW>I think he will attempt to toughen up the back line. I'm sure he will find a coupleof ugly players in those positions.
Will it be flair players? probably not but we do need to build a backbone first to enable the flair players to shine. It will come, it's more a question of how long he gets to do it....

If we are going to play like Wycombe Wanderers, what is the point of the new training ground? We could just take the lads somewhere where they could do cross-country running.

As opposed to the QPR way. Which is ?

Taken out of context yes but he was obviously meaning on Saturday. And meaning pointless possession. Stats can be very misleading.

A not particularly friendly "friendly" you would imagine...

I'm not sure it's about what people think, we've seen it with our own eyes so far, the current team is playing very direct and very aimless football. I don't see that changing next season under him but he'll be bringing in players who are better at at playing that way

I'm hoping he's seen that that style doesn't work but listening to him he seems to want more of it. Hope I'm wrong but been very unimpressed so far and whoever the manager is this summer no way should they be given everyone they want the same as Beale and Warbs which simply hasn't worked

I didn't see much "aimless" about the second half last weekend - a half in which we got more shots in target than we have for months and scored two goals.
As I keep saying, reserve your judgement until next season, once w know what the squad actually looks like.

We are obviously going to sell anyone we can this summer, but what concerns me is that if GA is given the keys how will that help us long term? The hard working types he brings in will hardly be sought after players we can sell on for a fee, like the Eze model, isn’t that what the recruitment strategy was all about. Where we went wrong was not accepting reasonable offers for Willock and others when he / they were playing well and then recruiting the next ones, now he’s worth what we can get for him which will be around 500k.
Also we might as well cancel the academy while we’re at it, can’t see how it will be compatible with GAs recruitment policy.
We have to take our FFP medicine but not developing decent footballing number 10 types will just keep us in this financial death spiral

I saw it as hoofing it down the channels for Armstrong to run onto

54% passing accuracy does scream aimless though

At the risk of repeating myself, where does this assumption come from that Ainsworth is averse to "Eze-type players" when he had him for a season at Wycombe??

The Eze model ????
A blind squirrel sometimes finds a nut, by and large the last 8 years hasn’t seen us produce anyone for a massive fee so it hasn’t worked
I’d be well happy for Ainsworth to have the purse springs at least we would have some fighters instead of this limped dick bunch of no marks who wear our shirt
As for Willock what’s the betting his hamstrings suddenly find a cure and he becomes a world beater

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I propose that the club reform itself as Blind Squirrels FC.

Also Mehmeti who they nurtured from Non League and sold to Brizzle for a healthy fee plus add ons.
Not sure Mehmeti played much Hoofball style. Similar playing style to Chair.

No doubt second half last week was better, although we did spend most of the second half on the floor pretending to be injured but I get what you mean. I meant more the 10 and a half games before that.

I just find it hard to reserve judgement as Ainsworths teams have played like this for 10 years and shown no sign of changing since he came here quite the opposite

This

The risk with Ainsworth and transfers is exactly that they will likely have little sell on value cos hard working but limited technical players are generally not in demand from the higher league clubs.

In his 10+ years at Wycombe, I don't think GA sold a single player for 7 figures. Mehmeti was sold for 500k I believe, no 3 or so on the list alongside.... Matt Ingram to QPR (!)

If no income comes in from player sales then we will likely end in a vicious circle of falling calibre players until we level out at what we can afford from regular income. Which has the advantage that we'll live inside our means (no more 120% wage to revenue) but is unlikely to see us in the top half of the championship.

At the same time, I appreciate the current model has not worked. Though if we leave the academy aside (we probably agree its been a disaster) I'd say the model hasn't worked cos we've managed, albeit not perfectly the "get good young players in" bit but failed almost entirely at the "sell at profit" bit. Case in point - subject of this thread Willock who the board should have been trying to sell last summer in the 5-10m range off the back of a great season with 2 years on his contract....

I’d rather ask respected L1 managers tbh not the deluded fans upset that Wycombe Wanderers were constantly over achieving and finishing way above their precious millionaire teams.

Ask AFC Wimbledon fans what they think. They have a smaller budget than Wycombe.

The style of football that is going to be played next season is going to be no different than what we have seen these past couple of months, only with even less talented players. A team of 11 Josh Scowens, er no thanks!

Mehmeti had a release clause that was triggered when the CEO left WW and moved into the same role at Brizzle. Think it was £1m plus add ons.
Plus WW were loaned quite a few from the PL which can be upgraded incoming to QPR.
PL clubs do not loan out to farmers tactics so he must do something right. I’m not sure how many have actually watched WW games regularly to reserve such judgement.

John Beck's Cambridge United team, which was the most extreme version of direct football ever attempted, contained three future premiership players that I can think of - Dion Dublin, Steve Claridge and Gary Rowett plus our own Devon White

We only like the mavericks if they're really good players.
Very very occasional hints and glimpses if all we've seen of Richards.

Other young mavericks of the recent & not so recent past had shown us an awful lot more by the age of 23. (e.g. Chair, Eze, Taraabt, Langley)
And without some of the off-pitch baggage that Richards appears to bring with him. (all the above model professionals, well ok then not Taraabt!)

If it's still possible to pull out of the deal, then I would like to see the club do so.
The lad got injured doing his medical at Birmingham City. I mean, who does that?
Half a million seems a hell of a gamble on someone around whom there are already several alarm bells.

He's maybe... umm... a little eccentric? But many excellent young players are. It's not necessarily a bad thing, sometimes quite the opposite.
