QPR Finances released on 09:36 - Mar 4 by francisbowles | I don't need to look around and I'm not sugar coating anything! I'm not arguing with how bad the latest set of accounts are. This is football though, not any other business. It's an industry where this seems to be typical. As long as the owners continue to convert debt to equity, they don't present an immediate problem. I am debating FFP and the academy, need for it and the fact it doesn't count towards it. Therefore, it follows that cutting it doesn't do anything to solve FFP. It might even make it worse as we would lose solidarity payments. Our most pressing issue is FFP and there is only one realistic way to fill that probable £10 million deficit. That is to cut relevant costs of which by far the largest is player costs. Rueben, Tony and others shareholders can worry about the accounts, for now. |
You're still looking at the problem at face value and failing to join the dots. I agree that expenditure on Academy doesn't count towards FFP accounts. However, this argument is too simplistic; you need to look beyond this. If QPR retains its Championship status, then it will be nigh on impossible to eliminate the deficit simply by cutting wages. Championship players know what they're worth and if QPR won't offer the going rate then their agents will speak to clubs that will. Lower wages will equal inferior players which will result in relegation. In order to stay within FFP limits the club needs to generate more revenue in order to create headroom. The most realistic way of achieving this is through player sales (a la Eze). It's not going to achieve this objective via the Academy because our Academy is Cat2 and any Cat 1 club can come along and pinch our best young prospects for peanuts. Ultimately, if the Academy is not producing players that QPR can sell on for big money, then it is pointless. That's why Benham got rid of it at Brentford.

QPR Finances released on 19:20 - Mar 3 by BazzaInTheLoft | You have changed your tune. You said FFP was a hoax last week. |
Nonsense. I said that it was a myth that QPR couldn't spend money on players in recent seasons because of FFP and I've been proven correct as Hoos has now admitted to pushing the boat out last season for promotion. Unfortunately, they recruited the wrong sort.
QPR Finances released on 20:29 - Mar 6 with 4096 views | KerryE | In rough terms, does our wage bill need to be £3.5m to break even? Lowest is Rotherham about £4.5m? But on a positive note, Luton/Millwall are only about £7m? Any thoughts how we go forward?
QPR Finances released on 20:59 - Mar 6 with 4032 views | RsinWales | Not a finance expert at all, so quite interesting reading all of the different takes on the meaning of these figures. The one common theme is that, whatever your perspective, we are absolutely stuffed the season after next and we have to start massive cost-cutting in the summer. At least that's got rid of one uncertainty for me.

Surely the key point that isn’t always being picked up on here is not so much our impending fire sale, but what is happening in the other Champ clubs. We can’t be the only ones in this situation as alluded to in the Preston example in Simons article. If West Brom don’t go up this year they must be in all kinds of trouble and surely the perennials of Reading, Brum etc must be hovering around that precipice too? Maybe things are bad for us but are at the lesser end of bad compared to many others?

Exactly. Surley in the fullness of time all that is left are top 4/5 with parachute payments, closely followed by Rotherham/Luton/Millwall etc. Everyone else has gone bust or had a points deduction. The gap between mid table and the bottom of the Prem must be about the same as mid table and national league I reckon at the moment. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
QPR Finances released on 23:09 - Mar 6 with 3826 views | loftboy | What would happen if all the owners of championship teams had a meeting and all agreed to blow ffp out the window, surely everyone would get a points deduction so negating the punishment? Or is that too simplistic?

You also said it was myth that the owners were putting in £1.8M a week. In a sense I suppose that is true as with the balance sheet items, principally the training ground, they are putting in a lot more. The biggie, regarding the FFP problem, is how accurate the £12M allowable costs are - as Simon admits that's (educated) guesswork.

Are the FFP rules agreed by the owners. They could change if they wanted but majority obviously happy with them.

Excellent analysis by Swiss Ramble. I find the graphs comparing us to other Championship Clubs across all areas of our finances very useful. Similar to Simon D's earlier analysis he thinks we are currently within FFP limits but there are problems ahead, concluding we 'would have to grow revenue (difficult), cut costs or boost profits with a couple of big money player sales'.

Football is becoming totally mental. The egos have certainly taken over the asylum. Sky have single-handedly destroyed the game in this country. Spending over £100million on footballers is totally obscene and paying them £500k a week just defies belief whilst the average football fan struggles to make ends meet.

Are they really "huge"? Remember, this is a club which was able to spend £100m (yes, really) on a new Training Ground recently. Plus they have impressive plans to expand their stadium too, which should bring in extra revenues. While I suspect that their recent problems ultimately stem from the fact that their (otherwise hugely wealthy) owners make their money from Duty Free airport shops in the Far East etc, which was completely wiped out during Covid. Now that they're over that, and assuming Leicester don't actually get relegated this season, they should be able to recover and start competing nearer the top again on a reasonably sound financial basis. While if they did suddenly find that they needed cash in a hurry, the sale eg of Maddison and Tielemans would probably close that £90m loss at a stroke. [Post edited 8 Mar 2023 17:39]

And not to mention the eight and a half year contracts, and all during a supposed cost of living crisis when families are using food banks. With potentially the Top 6 all owned by Multi-Billionaires, the rest of the "football pyramid" has no chance of competing. Obscene indeed - but also extremely sad.

QPR Finances released on 09:30 - Mar 9 with 2183 views | francisbowles | I'd love to see a breakdown of those other expenses (costs) It seems to include everything apart from Wages and Salaries. That would include all match day costs and training grounds hire. What are they and is anything else included.?
QPR Finances released on 11:09 - Mar 9 with 2050 views | themodfather | wigan post, sensible losses of £8m approx. my comment leicester are huge is very very tongue in cheek. lets not ferget their famous promotion when in admin, new ground and £60m written off, at least!

QPR Finances released on 12:51 - Mar 9 with 1880 views | PinnerPaul | As far as FFP is concerned, don't think enough is mentioned about the educated guess of £4M per year for allowable costs - could mean we are are in a whole lot more, or less, trouble than we actually think FFP wise - makes not a jot of difference to P & L, Debt or Cashflow of course. Given the mood on here most will think, its bound to be worse and tbf, that's understandable at the moment!

Similar number of staff (excluding match day) and yet we have 10m more wages. That’s 200k a week. Can’t be right surely? Must be missing something.

Why would they do that when a) many of them don't make such a muck up of it like we do and b) not all of them have a rich benefactor like we do. Look at the last few posts about Lootown. They are largely fan owned, do not have Sugar Daddies financially doping them, largely manage their books and sit in the top four. Why on earth would they let cowboy operations such as ours run amock? We need to face it that these rules are only unfair to our circus, who can't seem to stop spending more than they are allowed. We should be better than we are, so something needs to change. Our current "strategy" (whatever it is) clearly is not working...

Plus as Reuben said, chuck out FFP and every millionaire chancer who thinks it will be easy to get to the PL by chucking money at it, would arrive and take over most of the clubs in this league. Not his exact words! He actually said get rid of the rules and we wouldn't be the only club splashing the cash to get to the top league.
