Who wrote him off? The criticism he received largely was surrounding what happened, not what was or wasn’t to come. There was no writing off, well apart from OHL.

Seems some myths are needing to be nipped in the bud once again. Such a sad reaction to victory sadly, not the first time we have seen such a reaction this season.

I suppose it makes a change from being furious every time we won over the last two seasons, looking for conflict with carefully designed vague accusation is a new one I suppose.

Let’s have some quotes then.

It's not going to be a bed of roses this season, I think where we are now is where will be for the rest of the season but its transition. The football, passing and movement has been a million times better than if last season and with a few transfer windows.... I now feel that we can go forward with a good foundation.

First half was awful. Truly.

I can’t remember us getting near their goal. We were completely unimaginative.

Second half was a massive change and to be fair it does seem like that stemmed from the managers changes.

I can’t fault the second half.

In your opinion of course.

Well that’s not true either.

45 mins and 90 mins this season has been better. The rest considerably worse.

That’s why he has been praised for those 90 mins and 45 mins and criticised for the bad performances. That’s what normal people do, react to what happens… not pretend that the 12 games never existed off the back of two recent performances.

As I pointed out previously, we have attacked 26% less this season than last season.

It has improved over the last two games, but let’s not start pretending and creating myths that it was good before them. It wasn’t.

Well yes, but would be concerned for anyone who didn’t agree. How on earth could it be described as good?

We didn’t get near their goal.

Innit - some numpty from nextdoor who's here tonight famously said:

'We should OF got Morris, wiv 'is Chelsea contacts - not Martin'

That numpty is now extolling the virtues of Martin, the thick plank.

Martin deserves bucket fulls of praise. Despite him saying there would only ever be a plan A he has shown himself to be cannier than that, we always try to play tiki taka but we also show willing to try the longer stuff, be more direct too. We kept trying the ball over the top for Piroe and he was flagged off several times, ironically I thought he WAS offside when he scored.
Those who were overly negative, overly critical, maybe they should eat some humble pie tonight?
And OHL, come on fess up, you did Martin (or is it Russy) a verbal battering, you said he was arrogant, that he was taking our club for a ride and lots more besides.
Well right now, if Martin is taking us for a ride, it's a ride we are all (well mostly all) enjoying.

Thrasher, go on, you can say it again tonight and there'll be no consternation, that was another fantastic performance, specially after conceding early.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Correct.

And of course those that were criticising that plan A (which truly is awful by the way), backed him to make that direct change.

It was the “praise at all costs” brigade that seemed to suggest he wasn’t able to make that change and that time would prove plan A to work.

Thankfully as you say he has changed as many of us backed him to do and we look far more threatening when willing to go longer instead of insisting on short passing.

14.6% long balls today, could have been our highest amount this season, up there (ironically) with the Bristol City and Huddersfield wins. Cardiff was 10% from memory.

Everytime we have 8% or less, we lose. It’s forced, unnatural and handicaps us.

Ha yes! That linesman was a clown!

Mixed it up when we needed to which was needed at times in the conditions.

Tremendous performance. Martin got it spot on taking Downes of, brave.

WBA strange side, didn't seem to function much as a team, but Grant, Phillips, Robinson always dangerous. They had more shots on target than us. There's still more to come from us which is very exciting.

Placing Smith back in his more natural role worked very well as he's a bit lost playing so far forward, don't really know why he keeps playing him the advanced role.

The first half was truly awful. What a difference once Downes was subbed, it was like releasing the hand brake on a car and watch it achieve its potential. We were more fluid, we moved the ball around quicker. Downes will be a hell of a player in the future, but by God he is so slow and tedious 90% of the time. We were always going to be more of a force with him on the side lines.Good decision Mr Martin.

I think it's maybe because Martin is willing to experiment to see where he can get the best out of people, to see where he needs to strengthen the squad and sometimes, when you play in a different position it gives you a greater understanding of what's going on, it can improve your game if you're willing to learn.

Look at what Martin has said about Pato, he's 29 and playing a new style, a new position and he's obviously blooming LOVING IT!! He's learning, improving and putting in great shifts. It certainly took me by surprise, I thought he was a Bristol reject but I reckon they wish they could have him back now. The same for Piroe, they gave him one start but Martin's put his faith in him and it's boom bang a bang!

Maybe, just maybe, our new manager actually knows his job? I'm still loving his attitude to the games, saying we should be enjoying it or what's the point.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Of course it was, from people who are never happier than when they've got something to whine about.

Our game management was spot on today. After conceding a goal that early it would have been easy to panic and wobble. It's exactly what we did at Luton, but we seem to have learned from that experience.

We took a breath, calmed down, and played our game. Dominated the ball in the first half without creating a lot, but mentally it was good to be in control. A tactical tweak at half time (take a bow Korey Smith - immense in the second half) and there only ever looked like one team that was going to win after the restart.

It's a real marker of a result for what Russell Martin is trying to do here. What some people understood would take time whilst the less intelligent cried like babies.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Well done Mr Martin, coaches and players.

Of course it was all Downes fault, slowing us down (even though he was playing as an extra centre half). Obviously holding Grimes back (who again did NOTHING of note, not one noteworthy contribution). Nothing to do with Ntcham coming on in the Grimes role and providing more support for both wingbacks , Paterson and Piroe.

I don't agree with your assessment of Grimes at all, but the calling out of Downes by some on here is disgraceful imo. Quality young player with a huge career in front of him. It's to expected by some on here though, especially ones who are hurting over Martin turning it around.
