He was the greatest goalscorer of his era. I saw him play for Spurs against us a number of times and he nearly always scored. In fact, he scored in 7 of the 8 games he played against us in the 60s.
Also, like you, I saw that game at the Dell when he played for us against Vancouver Whitecaps. Even though he was 40 and quite portly, there were a few Saints fans that day saying he could do a job for us.
He was a great character too. Saint and Greavsie was the most entertaining football chat show of them all.

Very sad news as another true footballing legend and one of the best finishers ever has passed away. I saw him play for West Ham against us when he won the penalty that led to their equaliser after Tommy Jenkins’ wonder goal. RIP Jimmy. What a wonderful character he was. |  | | |

Agreed: what a great player. His goals to games ratio in the top flight is, quite simply, awesome. He lived not far from me and I saw him in a local shop a few years back, cheery and unassuming and clearly popular with the shop staff.
An all time great as a player and by all accounts an all round decent man as well.
