People failing to turn up for vaccine. 20:49 - Mar 29 with 8627 viewsFlashberryjack

More than a quarter of those scheduled to have the Covid vaccine across Swansea Bay on Monday failed to turn up.

In one day alone, out of 1,750 appointments, 492 did not attend their appointment at the mass vaccination centres.

I think that's absolutely scandalous, at least pick the phone up and cancel.

A different beast-that's calling which of the serotypes to include. There are over 120 serotypes of Influenza A alone with many variants in each serotype. It's a best guess of which 5 to include of over 200. SARS CoV2 just does not have that variation-so far its just variation is a single target. Some vaccines are being developed which will eliminate this to an extent too

Massively so- about half of those hopsitalised have cardiac damage and the risk of stroke is raised 5-10 fold on the latest I have read. Those infected and recovered are, like many serious infections, going to have decreased life expectancy and in many cases reduced life quality.

I have a colleague (female, early 40s and fit other than asthma) who have has over 12 months of problems including two episodes of severe respiratory distress. I had my initial AZ dose two weeks ago and living in an area of good coverage my wife managed to get hers despite being under 50.

As a scientist I believe there are people out there who should be in jail for manslaughter for spreading this misinformation.

Bang on!

Aye, instead of celebrating the brilliance of science and praising the ingenuity and achievement(s) of others?....Instead of showing well deserved gratitude they come out with conspiracy theory sh1te and denigrate in most utterly appalling gratuitous fashion. How utterly ungrateful!

I received an appointment letter to go to Margam Park on Thur 11th march .
The letter arrived on Wed 10 th march informing me of this arrangement .

One days notice given , but after a quick call it was re-scheduled to a later date .
Are they waiting too late to send out invitations ?

Very well organised at the Orangery also .

It is well organised fair play, I was there half hour, time I queued, then queued to be seated, then moved to vaccination area, its all very organised, Mrs went about a month ago and was virtually in and out, she was going stir crazy, by the time I got back to the van,

Again you're advocating forced vaccination, which for a pretty mild illness is ridiculous. We need to get away from this extreme far right thinking

The solution is simple, and someone mentioned it above. Send out appointments, which the person then has to accept, within say 7 days, to confirm the appt. Those not interested can simply ignore it and the appointment will go to someone else
[Post edited 30 Mar 2021 11:07]

It's not advocating forced vaccination. Nobody has to have the vaccine under that system. They're entirely free to choose not to. However, that choice may have consequences, as all choices do, or at least should.

Ultimately, those refusing a statistically perfectly safe vaccination are the potential breeding ground for mutations that may put us back to square one. If they can't get into a pub as a result of their selfishness, tough shit.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

"Vaccine DNA rate falls — but still above average"

"Louise Platt, Head of Operations for the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme in Swansea Bay University Health Board, said:

“We continue to urge everyone to attend their vaccination appointment if they can do so. If not, please telephone or email us to rearrange or cancel at the earliest opportunity.

We’d like to reassure you that we do everything possible to alert people to their appointments. Those invited to Mass Vaccination Centres receive a letter followed by a text reminder 24 hours before their appointment.

The letter, our social media channels and website all carry details of the booking centre phone numbers and email address to contact if you need to rearrange or cancel.

They are:

01792 200492 or 01639 862323 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday
Email: sbu.covidbookingteam@wales.nhs.uk
Although call volumes to the booking centre can be high at certain times, the average wait for an answer is five minutes. We are taking on additional call handlers to ensure we are as responsive as possible.

It should be noted that a large number of DNAs present the team with additional logistical and operational pressures however, we would like to offer assurance to our community that we do not throw vaccines away.

The booking centre manage a ‘reserve list’ system where the public who are within the next priority group and are next in line for the vaccine are contacted and asked to attend at short notice. The public cannot actively join this reserve list and we request that you do not ring the booking team in anticipation of receiving the vaccine unless you have received an invitation letter/text. Additionally, we also organise additional clinic sessions following situations like this to ensure that all the vaccine we have is administered

Both of these processes work well.

Finally, we’d like to remind people to update their contact details with their GP surgery as soon as possible if they move house, as we draw our contact details from their database.”

"We’ve issued a detailed statement giving the latest information on missed appointments (DNAs) at our three Mass Vaccination Centres."

👉 Vaccines are not thrown away, despite the pressure created by DNAs.
👉 Empty slots are often filled at short notice via our reserves process. (The booking team ring those ‘next in line’. There is NO LIST for the public to join.)
👉 Additional clinics are organised to use up vaccine.
👉 We do everything possible to alert people to their appointments, including sending text reminders 24 hours before their appointment.
👉 Cancelling or rearranging appointments is easy by phone, with average waiting times of just five minutes. (01792 200492 or 01639 862323 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday.)
👉 You can also email: sbu.covidbookingteam@wales.nhs.uk

With over 30m in the UK, well over half of the adult population, I think the Monday figures from the Bay are just a blip, if that was every day then that would be alarming.

I had mine in Clydach, lady phoned me, said Saturday at 10am, I was out by 10:02, can't wait for round 2

Do we really need compulsory vaccination. Here are todays figures for Wales
Care Home Residents 97%
Care Home Workers 88.5%
Heath Care Workers 91.7%
80 years and over 95%
75-79 95.6%
70-74 95%
Shielders 91.6%
65-69 92.9
Medical 16-64 79.4%
60-64 88.8%
55-59 78.1%
50-54 52.4 %

We have vaccinated in excess of 90% of those most vulnerable. The bottom 4 groups are still being vaccinated. Do you think we need compulsory vaccinations.

What is currently going on in our health board nobody really know. 2 of the last 3 Mondays non attendance has been raised. The last time it was found out people hadnt received letters. A number of surgeries have not been giving out list 6 vaccines in our area so people are being sent to vaccination centres instead. Is this a factor. People are saying they didnt receive their letters. Is that a factor. A full investigation needs to be done to find out why the DNA rate has gone from 6% to suddenly 28%. Something odd is happening.

When I had mine I received my letter the day before the appointment and I know others has the same. Is it late notification that is having the problem.

2 years ago I attended a cardiac appointment in Morriston only to be told I didnt have an appointment. The receptionist told me I wasnt the only one. When I got home I found the letter that had turned up that morning after I had left for the Hospital. It was post marked the day before despite being dated days before. Apparently they had missed the hospital posting time on the Friday so didnt go out until the Monday for a Tuesday appointment. Could this have happened here.

I've had letters cancelling appointments I didn't know I had because the letter never came.

Isn't it crazy to try to post important letters so late as to risk missing the date?

If there's less than 5 working days before the appointment they should phone you or send it registered post.
All letters should require you to phone them to confirm attendance or reject the appointment. If you don't phone they should phone you incase you didn't get the letter.

They can't just assume you get these letters but they do and if you don't attend you're put down as DNA when you may not even be aware of it.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

It is the problem and as I said to my nurse if your cancelling on a Thursday for a Monday or Tuesday appointment ring dont send letters. There appears to be a problem with the timing letters are picked up. That was what happened in my case. It missed the Friday pick up so didnt get posted until the Monday so was never going to get there by the time I left for an AM appointment on the Tuesday.

I do wonder if something similar has happened here. You dont go from 6% DNA to 28%. It is very odd and twice on a Monday.

When I had my covid jab I received a text message on the Wednesday AM for my appt. An hour or so later I received my letter and then the surgery rang. The MVCs are going to be doing that.

I am also considered that it might relate to some on list 6. It covers a wide area and some surgeries arent giving vaccinations to this list. Many on that list will be younger as well.

There needs to be a proper investigation telephoning a high percentage to see why they didnt attend to get to the bottom of this.

My personal experience is that the medical staff go out of their way to help but some clerical staff won't do anything more than they should and sometimes spend their time trying hard to do nothing at all.

I've had to phone the waiting lits office several times, they once advised me to try the Surgeons secretary so I emailed and I got an email back saying to try the waiting list office. I tried speaking to my GP who advised me to try contacting the surgeon, I got to his secretary and guess what?

My dealing with the hospital has been very good. The secretary for my heart consultant has been brilliant when I have rung her even telling me to feel free to telephone if I have a problem. My consultant even rung me 2 weeks ago out of the blue about 6pm. I had major problems with Clydach surgery even having 5 wrong prescriptions one after the other. I found the management there extremely unhelpful but in Pontardawe they have been wonderful as they were in Killay before moving back. A couple of months ago I have a problem where Lloyds couldnt obtain lancets. I told the surgery who rung Well and telephoned me back saying there was a prescription in Well for me. That would never have happened in Clydach.

As far as the problem I had with the appt the nurse had cancelled the appt due to illness and that happened but instead of sending me a letter I should have been telephoned. At short notice sending a letter isnt the right course of action. What I learned is there does seem to be a problem with picking up of mail and the time it goes out.

I think like everywhere you get the good and the bad and I am very thankful for the nurse who spotted my problem and called out the perier crash team. Without it I probably wouldnt be here.

The internal mail is collected twice a day in Morriston, or it was, letters not ready by the second collection don''t get to the mail room. If that's Friday then those letters don't get posted until Monday and if they're second class may not be delivered until Wednesday. That's how it used to be in 2011, Royal mail didn't used to do weekend pickups from the hospitals, in Swansea anyway.

Maybe it's changed but judging by my personal experiences, it hasn't.

You're right about the good and bad. If I related some of my wifes experiences she'd get into trouble and you'd be horrified. Personally I've had no joy when contacting one specialists secretrary, she just passes me on but, like you, another secretary was much better. Not only was she helpful but the enquiry was passed on to the main man and he phoned me himself. That's the Gastroenterologist Dr Ch'ng, I can't sing his praises enough, he's brilliant.
