The 1960 John Wayne version was awful. Historically way off, and John Wayne was badly miscast as Crockett. He should have played either Sam Houston (his choice) or James Bowie, but the studio forced him to play Crockett.
The 2004 version was a box office bomb, but was actually 100X better. Billy Bob Thorton was a great Crockett.
Anyways, that's me on my soapbox as a native San Antoinian (and probably with my better half, the only people in history who took a portrait of ourselves in front of the Alamo with Swans shirts on).
My top 5:
5. Tombstone (only because of Kilmer) 4. The Cowboys 3. 3:10 To Yuma (2007 remake with Crowe/Bale) 2. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Ever since my son was... never conceived, because I've never had consensual sex without money involved... I've always kind of looked at you as... a thing, that I could live next to... in accordance with state laws.
I've never been a fan of westerns but watched The Unforgiven for the first time the other night and thoroughly enjoyed. I'll be taking some other recommendations from this thread so thanks all!

None, America has no history.
Well it has some welsh history ...
‘Links between the USA and Wales are lengthier and far more considerable than many people know. For example, five of the first six Presidents of the USA were of Welsh descent and the country has had no fewer than ten Welsh-connected Presidents in all - plus, briefly, the President of the Confederate States of America.
The Welshmen at the helm of the most powerful country in the world were:- John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Morrison Jnr, James Monroe, William Harrison, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Harrison, James A Garfield and Calvin Coolidge. The Confederate President was, of course, Jefferson Davis.’

1. Blazing Saddles 2. Open Range 3. Maverick 4. Unforgiven 5. The Quick & The Dead
If they don't have to be movies, then Deadwood is #1 and that can bump The Quick & The Dead off the list.
Good call on Open Range. I can take or leave most westerns, but thought that was an excellent film. Recommended to anyone who likes westerns and hasn't seen it.
You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.

I couldn't pick a top 5, there's just too many that are so close together.
I can put some at the bottom of the list though, way down, any western with Audie Murphy. Real life wat hero that he was, he just wasn't a rough tough cowboy. Too clean cut and nicey nicey. For rough and tough you can't beat Clint or the Wayne/McLaglen combo.
PS Lohengrin...the Young guns films, don't tell me you like them for the music. BJ fan are you?
It was considered by some the most accurate Billy the Kid film though I guess we'll never know the truth about Brushy Bill.

No, mate. It’s the Sons of the Pioneers for me every time.

I’m disappointed with planetswans today. The comment “BJ fan are you?” has been up for nearly an hour now and nobody has jumped in two footed with a childish comment or a gif of Kenneth Williams.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Don't faint...
Ah! It’s a thing of beauty.
People with the wherewithal to indulge their hobbies to that degree inhabit an entirely different world to the rest of us. I’d give my right arm but I doubt that would even begin to cover it.

This is serious week, they’re all snarling.
Not me though, here you go. Boosh!

I actually put BJ deliberately hoping to lead someone into it, I nearly replied myself but then went all sensible and said NO!
Besides I didn't want Lohengrin thinking it was an offer
