Potter in for Celina on 15:19 - Jan 19 by DrGonzo | I for one think Celina is our most talented player and would be gutted if he left. |
Talented for a couple of games a year, I personally don't rate him. If he was half decent his goals tally should be like Ayew's.

Potter in for Celina on 13:29 - Jan 19 by Badlands | What bite? As usual the new new hing is incredible! Gallagher did OK yesterday and hopefully will improve as he gets to know players around him but he did no more than Byers was doing art season. Whoever we bring in they will shine for a while then, after a few months 'coaching' will become average and lack confidence. Celina has been played out of position by Cooper ... it is one of the recurring themes with this player. If Cooper gets no more from him than we have seen his season anywhere near £10 million would be great business. Bite in midfield? Play a defensive central midfielder whose roll is to break up play in the central areas between attack and back four, Fulton could do it, Wilmot by all accounts could do it. At present have we a group of players in the middle of the pitch moving from side to side and leaving massive gaps. Yesterday Wigan found it easy to get through because as our midfield drifted left and gaps appeared right. they drifted right and gaps appeared left, they stood still and there were just gaps. Play the right players in the right positions and we walk this league with or without Celina. |
You compared Gallagher to Byers and Grimes recently on the basis of statistics. In reality he’s nothing like either of them, a far more dynamic player who will run at players with the ball and create space for others - as he did for Celina yesterday. He also tackles , and whilst Grimes does it’s definitely not one of Byers strengths. On transfermrkt it shows Gallagher as scoring 6 goals and assisting 5 , Byers as scoring 2 and no assists and Grimes no goals in 2 assists. Statistics eh!

Potter in for Celina on 12:36 - Jan 19 by magicdaps10 | Here is an interesting thing for you to think on Jasper. We had 2m off United Jan 2nd as part of the James deal. Just under 1.5m from Sheff United for Mcburnie a few days back. We had just over 500k as part of the Siggy deal also this month. Out goings was just 200k as part of the Celina deal to Man City. Will also throw in that come May, we will have 1m off Fulham for Mawson. There is another 6m plus coming in June for payments on Fabianski, Messi, Clucas and Bartley..... If WBA go up that will be nigh on 7m. The only payments we have going out that month is just under 1m for payments on McKay, Asoro and Simon Pauket. |
You should be more upset that we let Messi go, rather than the board having spent the money due to come in. (Sorry, I know it's a typo )

Fair points. But the sats were about overall performance in the games he played - and as I'd only seen Gallagher in one game this season (at the Liberty) the stats are there as a guide. Interestingly ShoScored lists as weaknesses heading, passing an tackling! We'll see. (Only defensive contribution with dribbling were strengths - how do contribute strongly to defence if you are weak heading and tackling?) Yesterday he played a more attacking role more like Celina played last season - central. Can he do a Joe Allen? Quite possibly.

Potter in for Celina on 17:37 - Jan 19 with 2243 views | Neath_Jack | The improvement in his game yesterday was due to Gallagher doing the hard yards thus freeing him up to find a bit of space, IMO. He's been a shadow of the player he was last year, and going on this seasons form alone, he wouldn't be a huge loss. I'd prefer to see Peterson playing out there to be honest. I hope we keep him, but I won't lose any sleep if he goes, especially for the figure reported here. Hopefully he is going to kick on now, with the dynamism of Gallagher about.

That's great then only 200k outgoings just for the Celina transfer no wages to pay for players club staff, stadium costs travel expenses..what you talk about are what normal businesses consider capital payments for assets but they still have to pay ongoing running costs as has been repeated our income since relegation has plummeted but we still have a PL cost burden....though Birch has done what he can to reduce that. I'm no fan of the current ownership but I do not contribute to the thinking of many on here that the Yanks are siphoning monies away....my own business experience leads me to think this..we are where we are because of the sellouts and mainly Jenkibs the Yanks are just clearing the mess he left. BIRCH explained in the summer of the monies received for Dan and Oli took some pressure off 10M fof Celina would do the same.

Quite a few shadows of the players of last year - Celina, Byers, Grimes, Hoorn, John, Roberts all below the standard of last season and the earlier part this season. Bidwell gone backwards, John the same, Surridge not getting the support Bournemouth expected, Woodman not the standard je was showing on arrive ... team not playing as a team. No bottle and scared to tackle, and that is something you can not coach into a player, be surprised if he makes much of an impact in the prem.

Not sure Bidwell's gone backwards. Looks the same player he always was to Brentford and QPR fans I've spoken to.

He didn't play as a defensive midfielder for Charlton & it doesn't look like he's going to play as one for us. The ball for the first goal was the sort we've been missing for a while but he also played in Ayew for a shot & another for Brewster. Playing him too deep would be a waste.

I didn’t say we should. The point I’m trying to make to Badlands is that even though he’s described as a specialist CDM he can play virtually anywhere - and his goals and assists put our so called attacking midfielder George Byers and utility midfielder Matt Grimes well in the shade - also rendering the statistics Badlands produced (as a means of comparison between the three) completely meaningless.

Points well made but the statistics are meaningful because they rate a player's performance in the positions and games they played. 7 for a striker suggest he's better at being a striker than a goalkeeper who scores 6 is at being a goalkeeper.

In which case I agree completely. All sorts of stats get quoted on times which are as you say meaningless. As an example, statistically back in our first season in the premier league Mark Gower was the most creative player in European football at one point!

And yet the recent signing of 3 young players by Cooper to improve our first team, suggests that the Academy is not doing its job - despite huge multi-million pound investment on a yearly basis. We simply can’t afford such self indulgence going forwards. The prem money is gone after next season - and that reality will hit. We will still produce great local players though.

Potter stripped the older quality out of the academy last season and we released quite a few so the player who might come through won't be ready for another season or two. In the past three seasons players coming through the academy into professional football eih for us, for a few quid or for themselves has been impressive. But even youngsters look to Swansea and see us as being the back of beyond. But look at the figures - 'Category one status means the price of running Swansea's academy is thought to be around £4m a year due to facilities, staffing levels and travel costs involved.' (BBC) As well as the big figure transfers we also need to look at the value those players gave us when plying at Swansea (McBurnie type import could have cost more than £4 million in transfer or loan fees) and he players 'finished' at the academy such as Chanda, Fulton, Byers. The value of having Roberts, Rodon, Cabango Grimes, Byers, Fulton and other coming through - Garrick, B.Coooper and those who should come through such as Rushesha, Cullen, John, O.Cooper, Paulet, de Boer and Govea. and And we have players to return or have just returned from loans who could add to that value - Zabret, Lewis, Harries, Benda, Price, Southampton went Ito League one but maintained their academy and it paid off. On leaving the EU cheap imports, who have to reach the standard needed to meet the UK and FA regulations in order to be granted international clearance, will fall significantly. So do we keep the academy for a little over what we paid for Peterson or not?
