Holiday suggestions 08:44 - Jan 25 with 11939 viewskingsburyR

Morning All,

I'm looking to book a holiday with my wife and two girls (6 & 8) i August.

The default setting is two weeks in Ibiza, Lanzarote, Malta (beach, pool etc etc etc etc..........)

I'm looking for something different. I need to keep the kids entertained and at some stage have them swimming. (Their request)

We have thought about the following:

Thailand - too rainy
Barbados - too expensive
America - Little one not tall enough
Cape Town (mates there) - too cold

I fancy Austria/Switzerland/Northern Italy but its all about the kids for the next ten years.

Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed!

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

Was told that it pours at that time of year.

If thats not the case then Ill take a good look at Thailand.

And suggestions r.e. locations for families (2+2)???

I've not been for 20 years, but I seem to remember than different conditions dependent on which side of the coast you are. I love Thailand - not sure where best for kids but think every would generally be good. Koh Samui and Phuket I think would fit your needs (weather dependant) and near Bangkok Ko Samet might be good. Depends if you want a hotel or beach hut type accommodation.

Sardinia and Corsica for beaches with kids are great - tranquil clear water - really nice. Will be hot, and busy, in August of course.

I always like Dordogne in France with Kids - nearly always good weather, no beaches, but rivers you can Kayak down, get a pool with place you are staying (we normally go a few of us), cycling, good food etc.

My friend has been to Croatia a few times wit family and loves it - not been myself

Poll: Will we stay up?

My favourite place ever. Lovely people, and the town of Agios Nikolaos, about a mile away, is a good place for family nights out.

We're down to three. I like this one a lot!!! Much to do during the day for kids?

Also went to Menorca a few years ago, stayed in Son Bou, lovely long sandy beach without the usual lines of umbrellas!
Mahon is good for a day out as well.

We've been there a couple of times - lovely for a family holiday. Casa Andreas by any chance? Tremendous restaurant.

Lapland was great but flying back to Manchester on Sunday was like being in the fking Wizard of Oz. Pilot had to abort the first landing. Felt like the worst rollercoaster coming down.

That's me off of flying for the foreseeable.

Try Montenegro.

Budva or Kotor.

Fairly cheap as well.

Sorry, slow response by yours truly, missed this.

Well, it is rain season in August, but it's usually pretty sunny with (beautiful and spectacular) cloudbursts. You can be unlucky and get a week's worth of a monsoon, but it's very rare. Usually, it's a slightly fresher climate and gorgeous greenery. It's my favourite time of year personally. Cheap, plentiful accommodation and i love the tropical storms.

Koh Chang is cool, big and nice. Much, much quieter than Phuket but still quite big and interesting. Koh Lanta also very peaceful, beautiful. Good for families. Also quite big.
Phuket still has everything, but very built up and bust traffic everywhere nowadays.

For me, they are probably your best bet, all big enough to explore. Or there is Chiang Mai etc., up north in the hills. Really cool, but personally i always want to be by the ocean and that isn't.

Anywhere over here just so much more interesting than somewhere like Lanzarote or Malta. Your children would be exposed to much more of interest. Thailand has real magic and ghosts and monkeys and Tigers running around.

The only problem, the sea isn't always as nice this time of year. There can be dodgy currents. It's never a problem for me mind you, but i'm Cornish, we're water folk.
