Wow, thought we were going to win by 5 today. Instead we sat back, Calvin flicked on to thin air, and we rode our luck . Gateshead deserved a replay. Ref was awful

>10:1, but i couldn't tell you exactly, because i don't keep records either

But you still found yourself able to slate him for giving the ball to the opposition?

Yes I think he does perhaps you can also clear up why he shouts orders then marks nobody himself.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that his omission from the starting line up has seen a major improvement in team performamce?

Gateshead played really well second half. First half i think they backed off and let us have the ball without pressure, there was none of that during the second half.

We should have scored having said that in the second half.

Offside twice when the final pass was played. Inman managed to slip in shock when he managed to stay onside for one of them.

A draw would not have been unfair on us but aside from a shot that flashed past the post, theirs was more huff than puff.

Good old fashioned FA Cup match and unlucky Gateshead.

Thought it was 3 consecutive offsides before Inman slipped.

We seemed to be second best in midfield and up front second half and made Gateshead believe they could do us over. Most thought our second half performance was dire to watch. I enjoyed McGahey taking them on whilst on an early yellow.

Every player concedes possession. Perkins ratio of successful passes to conceding possession is very high, something that's consistently ignored by those who think he's no longer good enough

I'll take the opinions of managers in the championship regarding his midfield stewardship, those who've played him week in week out over a period of time

At his age, he hasn't got the turn of pace he might once have had, but i see no diminution in his level of skill on the ball or ability to play the ball to feet, often over distance to players in advanced positions

His one major error this season led to Dale conceding a goal, in the same game that we missed a hatful of chances, many from moves set up by him

But in your opinion he just "gives the ball to the opposition"

Forgot to mention one incident.

Their lad took Hart out with a peach of a 50/50 tackle. Remember people, this is football we are watching and tackling is allowed. Hart stayed down having bumped his poorly shoulder (again)

By eck, this didn’t half set off the anger in some Pearlers today. How dare the ref not send their lad off for tackling one of our players? Why did he not know that our player had a sore shoulder from a previous grievious bodily assault?

Proper Homers.

Hill should keep his slagging of individual players in house. Baldy mourinho indeed. Win is a win and I’m glad we are through to the next round. Hopefully we’ll get Stockport county.

It was a proper tackle, ball first then man, boom! I think the annoyance was that normally a ref would not let play go on for so long before seeing to the welfare of a seemingly hurt player.

He won the ball? Looked a blatant foul to me.

Totally got the ball then the man. Hart took the ball and man too.

Dale Stephens tried the same earlier today and saw red.

Without keeping records how do you know his ratio is very high? Maybe just maybe his ratio is not very high and that is one of the reasons he is not playing in the championship as I said just maybe because obviously we don't know for sure.
What of the other point of his poor marking is that due to his age?

I referred to his midfield stewardship. You don't get to play consistently in a championship midfield with what you think is 'poor marking" - it's nothing of the sort. It's using his experience to minimise the space available for the opposition, whilst organising those around him. The young midfielders we have will be learning how to do that from him, which is partly why he was brought in. They're not the only ones who could learn from it

Maybe the ratio is an utter irrelevance. It may mean a great number of passes to retain possession but no penetration that hurts the opposition . I was delighted when we signed Perkins. I'm not now.

But he does play penetrating, opposition-hurting passes, more consistently and more capably than any other midfielder we have

I'm delighted we have him. I'm not suggesting he should start every game, but his value to the club is being traduced by those who expect Perkins mark 1 and thus fail to see how his experience and game management are of significant benefit within a squad containing mainly inexperienced midfielders

My opinion on the Perkins debate is that we’ll see more benefit from his being at the club off the pitch than on it. I genuinely think he misplaces passes more than any other outfield player but it’s been noticeable in a number of matches how he dictates, coaches, and encourages other players around him, especially so when playing alongside the less experienced members of the squad. In that sense I see him as a coach on the pitch, but whether that justifies his presence in the team when we have a lot of talented midfielders missing out I’m not sure.

Probably talking rubbish again but, is Perkins better coming on when we have a lead no pressure for a defence splitting pass, marshall the midfield and just get rid of the ball if necessary defensively

At 2-0 I thought we would go and get a 3rd / 4th goal.

A lack of concentration and a poor save allowed Gateshead a sniff. From their first goal onwards Gateshead grew in confidence and had the lions share of the remainder of the second half.

Dale sat back and just could not get going again. Full credit to Gateshead they could have easily taken the tie to a replay with their second half performance.

The unfortunate thing is that space doesn't score many goals it is usually one of the other players .

The biggest travesty yesterday was discovering the Star Inn is closed until further notice. Had a few pints of Copper Dragon in the Spotland Social instead.

Another couple of weeks I understand, but don't hold me to that as nothing is ever simple with Sam Smiths. There are apparently numerous closures across Sam Smith's estate - presumably Humphrey Smith's...idiosyncratic management 'style' and business approach across his personal fiefdom is a factor in attracting and retaining staff.

"I'll take the opinions of managers in the championship regarding his midfield stewardship, those who've played him week in week out over a period of time "

Perkins started just 2 championship matches last season and was a sub in 11... hardly week in week out.

With the loss of pace, he has lost a vital ingredient in his toolbag. The David Perkins we see today is a shadow of the player we signed all those years ago.
