Ollie Rathbone 17:11 - Jul 22 with 5704 views | ColDale | Where has that lovely, well mannered young footballer gone? He played like a seasoned pro today, as if his instructions for the season was to stop being so bloody nice. He had niggles, gamesmanship and fallings out, as well as a whole host of wonderful stuff that he did. He looks to have got a fair bit stronger over the Summer as well. For all the great stuff he did last year, he stood out as being a young player. Not today. MOTM for me.

Presumably the width would be created from Bunney and Rafferty at full-back when they're fit. Completely agree Col re: Rathbone. Made some Championship players look silly at times today and if he can find some consistency this season he may well end up being one of our best players.

(yes granted Lund was injured/suspended/int duty a fair bit) Does he not start instead of Allen in a Keane-Camps-Rathbone midfield next season? Genuine question. He seems to have done a lot right in his time with the club and not a lot wrong...?

If you're talking about Lund, he's joined Burton.

Ollie Rathbone on 19:40 - Jul 22 with 3668 views | 442Dale | One of the most interesting things on Tuesday and next week at Morecambe will be how we line up in midfield. We were playing with four players who would class themselves as central midfielders today with Cannon the furthest right, Rathbone on the left. It was only when Calvin came on that we were back to the wide forwards we've become used to. On that front, I thought the Andrew-Davies combination looked a real handful late on. The Boro defence did not look at all comfortable. If we go with the two up top, one must start. If only to help Henderson deal with the battering he got today.

For what it's worth it was the same midfield four and same shape at Chorley on Tuesday night.

Rathbone is a player that i love to watch and so is Andy Cannon, both have bags of energy. Rathbone runs himself into the ground, nowhere near the finished article but he's got a great engine and his decision making is good. Really glad Hilly has decided to play Cannon as a midfielder and highlighted him as a replacement for Lund. He can do that role and also chip in with his share of goals. He has a habit of taking a extra touch and overplaying at times instead of playing the pass or putting in a cross but he can sort that out. I had a feeling that Hill was quick to jump on Cannon in the past and was wondering if that was affecting the players confidence, in hindsight maybe it was done for a reason. One of my favourite players Cannon and this is a big season for him, i hope he gets given the game time.

I think at the time, if I remember correctly - Hilly whilst praising Rathbone massively - he also made a point of saying how he was struggling playing/recovering for games - and not forgetting this was his 1st ever taste of 'man's football' after playing all his career at Academy level. He's done this previously with both Camps and Allen - rested them for sometimes a month when they've been in the team and playing really well. He's just protecting them in the long term.

His main battle was with their CH and RB. The CH got booked immediately after the ref had told him to stop fouling Ollie, only to proceed to foul Ollie. The RB booted Hendo in the head in my opinion very deliberately, Ollie thought so too. He was giving him loads about it afterwards and that was why I was so glad it was ultimately he that couldnt stop Ollie scoring. If that were a league game, their lad would be up for a Calvin style review.

Was it Hendo involved in Gibson's broken nose early on? The boot in the head could have been some kind of retribution? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Our lad did n't loose his cool though,a good trait to have Ollie.......Hendo, however , did wallop the Boro lad, charging him from behind, gave away a free kick and got clobbered and a gash for his trouble
