Selfish bastards, not seeing my kids for the first time ever at Christmas, as a way of compensation I'm booked to fly to Berlin on Boxing Day, do they not realise that without customers they wouldn't have a job to strike over, zero sympathy from me, glorified bloody waitresses.
favourite cheese mature Cheddar. FFS there is no such thing as the EPL
Thats Tough at christmas Rob. I get to see my youngest two who live near the forest of dean , a couple of times a year .
I remember many years ago ex mrs number two dropped the kids off to me on christmas eve morning and then being told by her in haughty tones, that I could have my own children stay for 3.2 seconds over The Christmas Holidays , while she rides various seasonal phallus , and thus expecting to be knighted for this magnificent gesture on mums net.

To be fair, I teach these "mixed-fleet" kids (they're mostly between 18-25) & they only make up 15% of the overall cabin crew numbers... BA's service will be mostly unaffected & they've picked the 25th/26th, when the vast majority of people will already be positioned where they are supposed to be for Xmas.
They are paid such a vast amount LESS than those doing the same job as them on other fleets within BA & are on much tougher schedules with more flying hours & less rest time between flights.
Around half have a second job just to be able to live & commute for a job they still really want to do... A second job, impacts their welfare in a safe critical role on an aircraft..
I do feel for them all & they're all good kids themselves, just asking to be heard, not taken for granted & get paid reasonably for what they do & do well.
Not having a go, just putting out there... I personally really do hope you get to see your kids somehow over the festive period...
Kind regards

People don't strike & sacrifice pay lightly. No-one wants to strike over Christmas & it's a last resort but for some it's the only bargaining tool they have.

Well said.
I've got a Sister who's flown for BA for more than 30 years. She does Short Haul now, on 33% She's available for 10 days a month, usually works 7days. She takes home more than the Kid's that have joined since 2010, on a mixed fleet full time contract. They earn just above the poverty line.
Great, some may say....cheaper Tickets.

Interesting one this people think of scargill and the big unions attached to our primary industries. People think of the late Bob Crowe. Somehow their taken for granted assumption doesn't extend to exploited young people in a uniform having to work ridiculously long hours.

I don't fully understand strikes, any of them. Maybe its because I'm self-employed and my work ethic is different. I dunno, but holding people to ransom because you don't agree or like your work conditions is wrong Imo. If you feel that strongly, change jobs.

Thing is, if you're self employed I assume you have a skill. Unskilled people who for various reasons - childcare, lack of qualifications, inability to travel, caring responsibilities - have to take low-paid jobs are vulnerable to sudden changes in hours, drops in wages, bullying managers. They can't all change jobs as there aren't always suitable or available jobs to change to. The stories out of Sports Direct were frightening.

It's not that I don't have some sympathy for the reasons that move people to strike, I generally do, it just doesn't extend to inconveniencing the paying consumer.
There are few skills that can't be learnt with time, determination, and probably some sacrifice. We live in a country / society where there are very few barriers to stop people doing what they want to do. So most people have choices. So, I would suggest, those going on strike could, in the vast majority of cases, do something else for a living but prefer to do what they are doing currently. In which case they should accept the working conditions that come with it.

I appreciate that, but its not those unskilled low paid workers that strike. Its workers that provides a service to the general public that strike. Teachers, nurses, fire fighters, Train drivers, pilots etc. I don't seem to remember the workers at sports Direct striking. I'm not saying I don't agree with some of their issues, nurses on low pay for example but I don't agree with how they go about it.

Just to add. Just because I'm self employed doesn't mean I'm not affected by change in work conditions and wages. I've had periods where I've hardly had work. Where I haven't been paid for work that I've done and chasing payment is a regular thing. I'm really busy at the mo( believe it or not as I'm always on here) and have work booked up till February but after that ,nothing . Zilch. I have had to down tools on occasions and pull off jobs where I havnt been paid, which I guess is like a strike, but I'm not affecting peoples day to day lives, and if I were than I honestly, hand on heart wouldn't do it. I guess id be called a scab.

Not at all, there have been long periods where I have been anything but alright. I just chose to do something constructive about it.
Well if you notice I did not reply direct to you or quote you or anyone.
I do understand your point but I also understand where companies like sports direct take advantage and do not give their staff the terms and conditions and wagers they should.
It's to simplistic to say pull up your boots or get on you bike (as Maggie did)
I honestly don't see the point of joining a union if your self employed. Surely government and law dictates how business practices should work? Having a union to fight your course is a guaranteed way for conflict in the work place as the union will have to justify its existence.
