The 2016 Assembly Elections: Which way will you be voting & why? on 12:59 - Apr 16 by Private_Partz
Thanks for that. I forgot about one thing in relation about to them believing they are being disenfranchised from Cardiff Bay. One Of the audience asked if there could be A North Wales Minister to fight their corner. Carwyn's response was that they already had four. Shouts from the audience that these were just AMs were lost. Not a bad idea actually. If we had say four super LAs n Wales then a minister for each to collate the requests for investment would be workable IMHO. Unfortunately with 22 LAs squabbling amongst themselves is divide and rule and that suits Carwyn and Co down to the ground and allows them to get away with murder. The plus side for me was the support for a North South road. It was seems that many voters across Wales could very well be united on this one, despite Carwyn's complete dismissal of it. A North Wales metro and improvements to the A55 will only make them less reliant on WAG and more on the jokingly called Northern Powerhouse. Thereby creating a bigger divide in Wales. Maybe it is a deliberate act so they can ignore the N further and concentrate on Cardiff and its environs.

What will happen here is? Labour will gradually hemorrhage (year on year!) 'core-support' voters from their ideological/thinking non donkey voting wing of which I and many others once (so loyally) belonged. Disgusted by what they're seeing.
To top that? Dai, Gwyn, Idris, Alwyn etc and many other ex-miners and ex-nationalised industry types and their wives are unable to donkey-vote nowadays because there are no ballot-boxes once past those pearly gates. Year on year their numbers get smaller!
Its a case of Labour voting dying a sustained, slow and gradual death!
1. The ex-heavy industrialised/unionised Labour linked donkey voting trend and family tradition of, is dying out! 2. The Welsh working class 'yoof' are no longer willing, engaged, or politically motivated enough in significant enough numbers to replenish/replace lost votes of tens of thousands of deceased die-hards! Big Brother and X-Factor voting is far more important to them now! 3. Intelligent and savvy working class types see the disgraceful Welsh Labour Party bias and are saying f#ck of goodbye to the party!
Give it another ten years and Welsh Labour is going to be in a right sh#t state!

As I've mentioned before, I know somebody coordinating Plaid Cymru's campaign locally. When I mentioned to him that things seemed to be going well for Plaid Cymru from what I hear around Swansea he dismissed this...."we won't do well in Swansea, it's Neath where we can make some gains". When I put it to him that their message (re: centralizing of public investment being skewed towards Cardiff) might see them gain some votes in Swansea HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. It took myself to mention the M4 relief road, he seemed to think this was a minor concern.
I got a 'Vote Plaid' leaflet through my door today, I live in Swansea....THERE IS NO MENTION OF ANY DISPARITY OF INVESTMENT. NO PLEDGE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE IN ANY WAY AND NOT EVEN A SINGLE MENTION OF THEIR POLICY ON THE RELIEF ROAD. (They spell out 3 ambitions on health/education/economy and make 9 short pledges.... e.g. on the economy 1) Major investment in our transport, energy and green infrastructure 2) A WDA for the 21st century to sell our products and ideas to the world 3) Cut business rates and give more public contracts to Welsh firms
There is then some blurb followed by 4 quotes from the 4 Plaid nominations standing for the Assembly. NOWHERE does it even mention "for the WHOLE of Wales" NONE of the 4 quotes even remotely address this issue.
It would appear that for Plaid the concentration of public investment in Cardiff is a non-issue.)
Do you know what I think? I think you lot who are switching to Plaid because of this issue are seeing things that are not there. Seeing what you WANT to see!
If you care about local issues. Vote LIB DEM. If you believe in Liberal values and seek to defend and promote them. Vote LIB DEM. If you would like to see our governance become even more democratic. Vote LIB DEM. If you believe that education is the key to an enlightened society and better lives for everyone. Vote LIB DEM. If you believe in fairness and doing the right thing. Vote LIB DEM. If you are sick of childish partizan politics. Vote LIB DEM. If you want to see genuine change...e.g. reform of the voting system, reform of the House of Lords, relaxation of the drug laws (setting us on the path to legalization) etc. VOTE LIB DEM.

Corbyn factor. Welsh Labour need to up their game. I don't think it is as terminal as some think but they have to up their game big time and there was no sign of that from Carwyn last night.

Firstly thanks Copper for picking up on many things I would have replied to although I probably will pick up on a few points raised ;-) It just goes to show that even though many of us have different political pursations our views are driven by wanting fairness across Wales and not a campaign against Welsh Labour. If they were not Cardiff centeic they would have my vote and I would be a card carrying member. Anyway. Ask The Leader. Carwyn's turn last night and he had a rough time. I must say that it would have happened with any First Minister. It is almost always the case that those in government get the most stick at election time. Having said that the question about the people of Notth Wales feeling detached from Cardiff is both damming and sad. It was met with the usual shrug of the shoulders and then a list of investments was read out and as usual it included loads of schools and hospitals. I find it amazing how the SE have their massive investment projects whereas our Goverment think that just doing their jobs in other areas compensates for this. Where did the North Wales metro and City Deal come from? If Swansea Bay is to get a similar deal he is going to have to find another billion at least to support these ventures in match funding. Call me a cinic but isn't it strange how this comes out just prior to the election. Having said that it is welcome news and maybe the penny is dropping. I ain't holding my breath though. Transport infastructure was brought up and the audience also expressed a need for a decent North South dual carriageway or motorway. It was dismissed out of hand as too expensive. When challenged on the billion pound Cardiff 10 miles it was justified by coming out if a different pot of money. He highlighted better train services and air services. Unfortunately both of these only link ultimately to Cardiff. The former achieved by trains not stopping at stations to speed things up and the latter is just a plain pathetic service created to help AMs circumnavigate our completely inadequate roads. 5 hours to travel N to S was bellowed out by many in the audience. Health was a strange one. He had quite a knocking on his record and thinks one of the solutions is to go to the Chemist first, then the nurse practitioner, then the doctor and A & E the last resort. I am sure he did not mean this in every case (at least I hope so) but it came across as that. For the record I have some sympathy with WAG here as they work within a restricted budget and an aging , poorer population. Despite trying they cannot centralise many services as communications / infastructure across Wales are almost Third World. My criticism is they do next to nothing to address this problem .......outside of the SE of course. In Education the tests introduced attracted a lot of criticism. Some said there are too many and are to the detriment of the children. Carwyn thinks they are essential to check progress. I have an open mind on this one. I suspect a balance between the two is needed. He could not guarantee support would remain the same for university students but committed to ensuring they would have a better package of support than in England. So that was the last programme. I was not happy with the format. It was too short and the questions seemed completely at random, varying wildly from leader to leader. This even though they were obviously selected beforehand. The audience can be dismissed as moaning gogs but it is a damming indictment of WAG's performance IMHO. Carwyn came across to me as both smug and swarmy but I accept my judgment could easily be clouded by Welsh Labour failing the rest of Wales.

Interesting points, well made. I didn't see the show last night, but you made a pretty good summary.
Out of interest, if you're a socialist, a Corbynite and would be a card-carrying member of the Labour Party, why wouldn't you just join and do what you can to move the party in Wales closer to what you believe is right for the country?
Just seems odd to me that at a time when the Labour Party is just about as transparent and malleable as its been in decades, and far more open to reform than any of the other major parties, you decide to complain on an anonymous forum with no direct link to policy makers?

A good point and something I have thought about. I find it a big hypocritical to be a national member when I am so critical at a local level. Thanks for you comments but I did chuck my opinions in at every opportunity so I can't claim it to be an unbiased report ;-)

Is there any proof of this, and proof that Welsh Labour has doubled membership as opposed to the PLP? Because it was well publicised that the PLP doubled across the UK because of the 'Corbyn factor'.
Also, anyone who is remotely interested in politics is able to distinguish between Corbyn's left-wing brand of socialism, and Welsh Labour's 'New Labour' slant where they centralise wealth which is far more akin to the Tory model (again, they've made one city the 7th richest in the UK, the rest have regressed, and they still continue to give money to the affluent city). Again, I know you don't like this argument, but surely giving money/jobs/investment to the rich isn't a true Labour left-wing philosophy? Is that not the same philosophy Labour supporters lambaste the tories for?

Do you realise what PLP means? Because your continued references to it make no sense. PLP membership hasn't gone either up or down since Corbyn was elected and a fair chunk of the PLP would like nothing more than seeing Corbyn disappear.

Apologies, no I don't mean the MPs, I was just using it as an abbreviation. I meant members of the British Labour Party.
Am I missing something? I can see only one reference to Cardiff, and that's from the Tory candidate. I tend not listen to him very much though, he's lied about the bus services in Gower for the last few months, and his big plan for education in Wales is for each school to get the resources allocated according only to how many pupils it is. In practice, this completely disregards "need" (schools in the east of the authority have far more issues surrounding truancy, nutrition, free school meals etc etc than in the west). A completely irresponsible policy if I've ever heard one.

Labour is IMO historically the greatest political party i.e. creating the NHS etc! But?......Sadly Welsh Labour/Wales Labour it is destroying itself from within because it is infiltrated by career politicians whom are more than happy to partake in a treacherous betrayal of party principles! All that inequality, social injustice and Thatcherite division where richer parts of Wales/Welsh society get the cream and the others? Contempt and repeated two finger salutes!
I bet the Tories cannot believe their luck being gifted a seat like Gower and (in the near future!) other constituencies like Wrexham, Swansea West, Llanell etc! Impostors destroying their thinking ideological 'non-donkey' vote by the tens of thousand! Carry on Welsh Labour mugs, your complacency? "What comes around will go around at the polling booth"!
So I'll repeat Cardiff Bay Opera House £60 million, entire Welsh steel industry, its employees, families and affected communities £30 million!

You love to repeat this Welsh Opera House vs steel industry figure.
How much would you have given the steel works? What would it have gone towards and under which Welsh Government powers would you point to in order to justifiably/legally give the money? And which part of the non-ringfenced budget would you take the money from and give to the steel works? How long would you "bail the industry out" for? Which budget would you use to contribute to the £15bn pension pot for current and former steelworkers?
Curious that the steel workers union, Community, seem to completely disagree with you about where the money should come from. Also curious that they explicitly support Labour in Wales.

A few things,
The tories weren't gifted Gower, they practically bought it. They outspent Labour 10-1 on long campaign spend and Byron Davies had been knocking off the seat for basically a decade whilst being the list assembly member. Anyway he's been effective at annoying local residents over the last 9 months by basically voting with the Tory whip every step of the way a la tampon tax and fracking under the AONB.
Swansea West is about to be gerrymandered by the Tories and turned into a seat they've (allegedly) illegally been calling Swansea North for a few years.
The main opposition in Llanelli is Plaid. The Tories finished 4th in the general. Nia Griffith increased her majority although I wouldn't be surprised if they take the Assembly seat because of thirsty Keith Davies' antics.
And again it comes up that anyone voting Labour is a brain dead donkey and everyone else is making an informed choice. Bravo the artist formally known as trampie.

In fairness, it deserves to be repeated. Would you rather the figure that they spend £20m annually just maintaining Cardiff Bay? Or, the £47m Welsh money that got spent on the Millenium Centre? Can you tell me a single thing they've done in Swansea which remotely matches this expenditure? Given that they sold land in SA1 for £15m and promised to use it to build a marina - and then gave that money to an unspecified project elsewhere. This has been going on incessantly for 20 years, yet for some reason, not in any of your posts, have you had a problem with it.
Regarding the link I posted, yes, it was the prospective Tory AM who found that people are fed up of Cardiff centric policies, but just because it's Tory, it doesn't mean it's not true. There were a lot of news interviews with Gower constituents after the GE and the same thing kept going up, 'Labour has neglected us'. Fingers crossed, we vote these jobsworths out and make them fight for our vote, and give us the investment that a second-city deserves.

No, it doesn't. It's not an either-or choice.
Seeing as though you agree with Trampie, can you point to which part of the budget the Welsh Government should draw upon to fund the steel industry, and which powers it has to do so? And when this money is given, how long will it be given for? Who will contribute to the existing £15bn pension pot?
Again, the steel workers union, Community, completely disagree with your assessment. Is there something you know that they don't?

Yes, it does. They could stop using budget to give companies like PWC, Aston Martin and Pinewood Studios to open up there, and spare some budget for the south west of Wales.
Seeing as you've ignored the question, I'll tell you, they've not spent that amount of money on a single project in Swansea. I'm sure you'll think that's fair and that Cardiff deserves all the money because they're the capital, so please forgive us for thinking that spending £80m on two buildings alone, is worth more than putting that type of money into the steel works.
Why aren't we getting £80 to help with our city centre regeneration plans? Or SA1? Again, you probably don't care because your love for Labour has probably led you to think that 'what's good for Cardiff is good for Wales'.
You claim all these problems with budget, but then how come they still have money to keep funding projects in Cardiff? The new BBC HQ and Capital Sq etc? The £20m to just maintain Cardiff Bay they'll somehow find this year (more than they're contributing to our city centre regeneration).
Also, since when would any union back the Tories over Labour? Labour points the finger at Westminster, and it leaves them feeling like little old Wales has been bullied by big bad England. That's how they get away with such incompetence, it's the same strategy the SNP use. Everything that's good about the country, they take credit for. Everything that's bad - Westminster's fault.
I was definitely not going to vote for Labour due to their pro-Cardiff stance but have been in touch with my am up here last night over an urgent matter and he has replied this morning personally, even though he is in Bridgend at the launch of the Labour party election manifesto, so our 4 votes will be going to him, the man, not the party. He just happens to be the Labour contender for my constituency.
