Don't call me a Taff or you'll be charged with racially aggravated harassment. 08:14 - Sep 6 with 4872 viewsNOTRAC

James Davis from Blakeney in the Forest of Dean has been found not guilty at Cheltenham magistrates court of a charge of racially aggravated harassment.
His alleged crime.
He called two Welsh bouncers at Lydney who were in the process of evicting him from the club........"taffs"
We are now living in a country where rape, child molestation etc goes unpunished. But you dare come anywhere near being racist and the book is thrown at you.
To prosecute someone for calling someone a Taff would be pathetic except that it's actually happened.
As a Taff myself I am both sad and angry that the word now comes under the heading of racist.

I'd find being named after a muddy trickle in Cardiff highly offensive.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

It's not racist and that's why he was found not guilty. They should be embarrassed.

A few people in Swansea, me included, dislike it because of the rivers location rather than the fact it is derogatory towards the Welsh.

I agree there is a line to be drawn and such lines are difficult to draw.

Given it is said he was swearing at them I doubt he was using that particular "collective noun" in a complimentary way. There are other such words for other groups of people, which if used in a similar way would involve fairly rapid and strong legal retribution (although some similarly use them proudly to describe themselves).

It's all about negative group stereotypes I suppose and I agree about being proud to be a Taff and the sadness and anger at it being seen as a racist term. There are sadly negative associations for e.g. from the shocking old old rhyme Taffy but that does not mean such pathetic things should be allowed to affect the positive image.

I am sure a Geordie would be proud to be such and many would describe them thus without any RANCOUR. However add a swearword on the end and it is is generally an insult (except for e.g. when used as amongst us Jacks - where it is a positive term of endearment and acceptance).

Complicated issue. Not dissimilar though to using someone's weight, hair state to describe them when speaking in a derogatory way.

I agree. The magistrates I've come across in my extremely sad experiences have been utter buffoons. I reckon they need people like you who would be able to make better decisions and be far far more understanding in the real world.

I realise this could be costrued as you being a buffoon. I am not making that comparison. Unfortunately I have to really be careful as there are some very very sensitive souls on here recently.

No I would not take that amiss in any way, but do admit to definite personal elements of baffoonery.

I have to say I am struggling to understand how 'Race' has been substituted for a national identity i.e. 'Welsh'. I suppose that for some people being called 'Taff' may be insulting, but how can it be considered Racial? Both the complainants and the CPS need to get a life and the latter concentrate on carrying out serious prosecutions with a degree of competence. At least the verdict indicated that someone had some common sense.

What would you say the boundary would be for being born an official Jack?

Something like being born within sight of the guildhall clock maybe?

Morning Roger.
A good question.

Not really thought about that but I d like to know WHEN it became the norm for people from say Llanelli "turks" to be refered to as JACKS. I d suggest anyone doing this at the old Glen Ballroom would had a face to worry mam with when getting back home.

Techically I d say the old County Borough of Swansea..

ps, I now this thread will lead to blood so fookit. I never started it like..

pps, I been called TAFF so many times and I never thought much about it honestly and Im supposed to be precious .

A Jurk maybe?

Was not born in the Gorseinon area though, born in the Swansea Valley, affectionately called 'Woolley Backs' by the Jacks.
