Along with all other Premier League games, Saints game against Brentford this weekend has been postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This will also see the B team and the Women's games postponed as well.
Saints have confirmed that the game against Brentford has been called off following the death of the Queen yesterday as will all Premier League games.
Richard Masters, the Premier League Chief Executive, said:
"We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country. As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.
"This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”
As of yet there is no decision made on the matches due to be played the following weekend when we travel to Aston Villa, I am lead to believe this decision will be made as soon as the exact details of the Queen's funeral are confirmed.
Southampton supporters have a certain affinity for the Queen given that many of us over the age of 55 watched a football match with her at Wembley on May 1st 1976 and after it a whole city rejoiced as she handed the FA Cup over to Peter Rodrigues.
This was the last FA Cup Final that she attended, some will say it was the last football match that she watched, that is true, but she did open Derby County's Pride Park Stadium on 18 July 1997, although no football match was played.
