Saints V Scunthorpe The Preview Friday, 11th Jan 2008 10:34 This is a fixture that isnt eagerly awaited in Southampton for many reasons. Saints take on Scunthorpe United at St Mary's with morale amongst supporters at its lowest level in living memory and truth is unless there is a big walk up on the day then itcould be the lowest ever league crowd at St Mary's. The heralding of the signing of Andrew Davies as a "defining moment" by George Burley has cut no ice with the supporters and aligned with the fact that we seemingly cant even compete with Colchester United after seeing Phil Ifill go to layer road has left supporters aghast at the silence emitting from the boardroom at St Mary's. On the field Burley has a few changes to consider, the team played well against Leicester and although he has the aforementioned Davies available again, it would only be fair to stick with the central duo of Thomas and Powell who performaed so well against Leicester. In midfield Burley has to decide who replaces Saffri, in short it will fall to a choice between Ingio Idiakez who has recently recovered from injury or Viafara who mysteriously took no part in the Leicester game. Apart from those two positions its expected that Burley will keep faith with the same nine players who faced the foxes. At this moment in time Saints are still hanging on to the shirt tails of the promotion pack, but they cant keep dropping points, especially at home, a win against Scunthorpe will set Saints up nicely for the trip to Plymouth and keep them in a position to perhpas put a run together towards the play offs. But sadly the same old problems are still there, squad wise Saints should be in the top six, each game you never know what Saints side will run out both in personel and in attitude in short we cant find any consistency, the supporters are getting fed up with this and are starting to vote with their feet. The fans are fed up with boardroom wrangles and leaks to Internet message boards, in the last three years they have seen this club made a laughing stock in football due to a succession of Chairman, they want to see the Club run as a football club should be and they want to see leadership from the boardroom, with due respect to Scunthorpe and their supporters who have earned their right to play in this league, many Saints supporters will see their visit to ST Mary's as a barometer of our current sorry position.
