"no one bar Pompey, Deby and ourselves will really remember afterwards anyway" Oh yes they will. If we ever get back into the Premier League again, it will be mentioned every time Saints are on TV. As for today, I guess we'll find out if the team spirit is already broken beyond repair, with most of the players already thinking about which team they are going to play for next season. If, in spite of that, Juric has managed to organise and motivate them enough to win today, he's a better manager than most people think. We usually get a decent effort for the first quarter of the game. Then it gradually falls apart after that. |

They are now only 26 points behind their local rivals, Sheff Utd, who are in the 2nd of the 2 automatic promotion places. Wth 9 games left to play, Blades fans must be really worried. [Post edited 13 Mar 14:02]

Somebody from the mainstream media pointed that out to Karoline Leavitt at one of her daily press briefings and she said she was making a note of that reporter i.e. he won't be allowed in again. He'll probably find himself in court soon, facing Trumped up charges. Those press briefings are now being filled with far right, oddball podcasters. The one who was given the first question had a cross tattooed on her forehead. Meanwhile, the mainstream media are not being allowed to ask questions. |

Yes, Dave Maclaren, and, as you'd expect, he was terrible; possibly, the worst Saints goalkeeper I ever saw, although Alex McCarthy comes close. Maclaren was released after a few months here and no other club would take him. I expect the same would happen to McCarthy if we ever released him. [Post edited 13 Mar 13:43]

I was at the front of the Milton Road end at the 9-3 win so I got a closeup view of the goals. I remember feeling disappointed because we'd scored 9 with half an hour left to play and were singing, "We want 10", fully expecting to get them. Although I guess I shouldn't have been as Wolves had led 2-1, so it was quite a comeback. Surprisingly, apart from their goalkeeper, who Ted Bates later signed, Wolves had a good team that season, including the great Ron Flowers, and they were our promotion rivals. After we beat them 9-3, they won their next 4 games without conceding a goal and beat Pompey 8-2. The song when we went to Molineux later that season was. "Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to Wolves we go. With a 9-3 here and a 9-3 here, hi ho, hi ho." We only drew 1-1. But I was at Molineux when we won 6-2 at a midweek game in 1976. [Post edited 13 Mar 10:39]

It's funny how when Pompey string a few home wins together, everyone starts going on about the effect of the home atmosphere. Yet they ignore the fact that last year they went 7 months without winning a single home game. A few years back they published a league table of the all-time percentage of home wins and Pompey were near the bottom of it, well below Saints. [Post edited 13 Mar 9:16]

All of the touring around the world, which in those days was done by ship, took its toll. We've never been the same since. |

of Saints' 11-0 defeat of the French national team in Paris, back in the days when Southampton was one of the top teams in the world and could thrash just about any national team on earth. Saints beat Argentina 8-0 in Buenos Aires later the same year. [Post edited 12 Mar 12:37]

There does seem to be a common theme: making your closest neighbours and allies your enemies: the other North American countries for the USA; the EU countries for the UK; Ukraine for Russia. Historically, it's the usual precursor to trade wars and real wars. [Post edited 10 Mar 14:15]

You can tell a lot from the pre-match exercises. The shooting practice is always interesting. Our players seem so much worse at it than the other teams. Probably the laziest player I've seen though was Cole Palmer. He just ambles around on his own, doing the occasional flick, not bothering to join in with the others, and it seems he's allowed to get away with it. The most impressive solo routine I ever saw was when Le Tissier stood in the centre circle, shot at the crossbar so that the ball bounced back to him and then repeated it, hitting the crossbar again. He didn't miss. [Post edited 9 Mar 10:36]

He seems to have got it just about right today, with one big exception: his favourite, Smallbone, is still in the middle of our midfield. That's such a shame, because Liverpool will be shattered after their efforts in Paris on Wednesday night, and they've got to face PSG again on Tuesday. Edit. Smallbone scores. Juric is a genius; I don't know what I'm talking about. [Post edited 8 Mar 15:48]

It was quite a fluke. We finished 9 points off the automatic promotion places, both Leicester and Ipswich did the double over us and we got thrashed 5-0 by Leicester and Sunderland. We then came up against an even worse West Brom team and a Leeds team whose form had fallen off a cliff. [Post edited 4 Mar 10:36]

The old rules of right vs left have gone out of the window, just as they did in 1939, when Hitler made a pact with Stalin, in spite of the fact they were at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Of course, they didn't really like each other and were destined to fall out. It's about trade wars and real wars now and, as countries realign, another unlikely alliance of Europe, Canada and China is not out of the question. Putin teaming up with Trump, who is waging a trade war against China, is going to have them looking elsewhere for friends. [Post edited 4 Mar 10:19]

 | Forum Reply | Maybe Danny Rohl is coming at 09:33 4 Mar 2025
Just look at the table. There are 3 teams in the Championship miles clear of the rest. Wednesday are 13th and sliding down the table. They are 31 points behind Leeds, have lost 2 more games than they've won and have a goal difference of -9. Rohl is performing even worse at Wednesday than Nathan Jones did at Luton and Russell Martin did at Swansea. Meanwhile, Ralph at Wolfsburg is well and truly disproving the ludicrous theory that his success was due to Rohl. If we take an even more mediocre Championship manager than the previous ones, we can only expect even worse results. [Post edited 4 Mar 19:20]
