Southampton V Stoke City The Carabao Cup Verdict
at 18:16:59

Generally speaking, today's football is mostly about possession. When the ball is received, pass the ball in the direction you are facing. For heaven's sake, don't turn to go forward and try to actually beat a man! very seldom do you see this in the middle of the pitch - occasionally on the wing where it seems the safest place. .

Southampton V Leicester City The Verdict

Nor sure if anyone has made the point yet, about our marking for the 98th minute goal. Just like at the end of the Ipswich game, we had 11 men in the goal area, with no one marking the 3 or 4 Leicester players lined up on the edge of the penalty area. It need just one or two of our players to be there to stop their free shot.

New Reform MP Rupert Lowe Will Give His MP Salary To Charity
at 17:52:15

I think of Rupert Lowe as the chairman who built the stadium. As I remember the cost was £32 million - that is £1,000 per seat. A lot of new stadiums were in the process of being built around then, and afterwards, at a far greater cost per seat than that. That is his permanent legacy.

Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict

Re the comments about the corners, they were mostly decent corners, inswingers from Manning on the right and S. Armstrong on the left. Some were wasted as we had no one beyond the back post. Having said that, we haven't got a tall attacking player, like Lambert perhaps.
I agree with Westsussexsaint about Manning. After a shaky start of the season, he has improved enormously, and he and Fraser are linking well.

Southampton V Plymouth Argyle The Verdict
at 13:08:41

We were crticised earlier in the season for possession football that was going nowhere. We still have loads of possession, but now with a purpose. The most important player is the one making space to receive the pass. Maybe we should be playing more chipped forward balls to the front line. We haven't got a Lambert to head in crosses, but we have found other routes in.
Re Bazunu's mistake, his mis-control has been the exception to his normal calm possession on the ball. He has been brilliant with those low 40 yard passes.

Southampton V Bristol City The Verdict

Man of the match - Bazunu. One outstanding save in each half, and quick and timely on coming out to rescue situations. His 40 yard passes are usually accurate, having now found that it is not necessary to pass within the penalty area every time.

Agree with all above. Re his England debut, I believe he came on as sub, and actually scored with his first touch - a header from a left wing corner. Maybe a first?

Only a Thousand Tickets Left For 4th V 5th Place Saints V West Brom Clash

Bowlercow, I thought that the approval of the Stoneham site was for a max of 25k. Re St Mary's, there is a greater walk-up from where people live, than on the edge of the city. Re rail links, we have a line right next to the stadium - probably nearer than at any other ground. Why hasn't this been used?

I read a while ago that the Championship is the best supported second league in the world, which is a credit to English football generally. It would be interesting to see the figures from the major footballing countries.
There was a time when people were advocating St Mary's being extended. But I think it is about right for us. We would have had a 25k stadium at Stoneham.

Southampton Transfer Links Mainly In Strong Areas
at 17:14:21

Zonehead mentions the crossing of JWP. While we haven't any great headers of a ball, perhaps it's time we varied our corners by including some short ones, when the ball can be inter-passed between the two players, to give someone else a chance of a shot along the ground. Otherwise, how many goals have we scored from corners?

Fraser Forster In Line For New Saints Contract
at 17:01:23

Forster is very much an unconventional keeper. It has been well reported that he doesn't leave his line very far to catch crosses, which is surprising, given his height. However, he is good at leaving his line in order to sweep, up through balls. He is good at what could be described as star jump saves, spreading arms and legs to make himself big. But a weakness is he tends to parry shots that other keepers might have caught. Whoever is in goal, I hope the manager abandons the two-yard goal kicks, which invariably leads to trouble.

All The Info About Transfer Deadline Day
at 17:08:10

I don't know how many others feel about it, but I find having a mid-season transfer window somewhat tiresome. Especially irritating is Sky Sports countdown clock, indicating seconds and tenth of seconds.
I would like to see a summer window only, to open after the last game of the season, and to close before the first game. That would give nearly three months to do business, then managers would have to get on with what they have, and be judged on that. Lets have more talk of playing football, and less of the business side.

My 50th Year Anniversary Of Watching Saints Today
at 11:19:41

Well done Nick, from a fan that just attends home matches now. I cant recall what my first match at the dell was - I suspect my father took me to a reserve game as a starter. When I look back at the players in each season to find the ones I recognise, it seems my first season was 1952. This was even pre-Terry Paine. Great player - with the ball at his feet, he could centre the ball with either feet with ease. I just missed out on Charlie Wayman who my dad often would mention. In those early days there were no subs allowed, and if the first team was at home, the reserves would play away, while the youth team played elsewhere. I assume each squad had a standby reserve.
