Celar's deepening nightmare leaves QPR well adrift – Report
at 08:19 25 Nov 2024

Nah. Who sanctioned the sale of Dykes, leaving us with two strikers, both relatively unproven at this level? I doubt that was Marti. You could make a case that with Dykes up front recently, we'd have a few more points on the board.

Notwithstanding any extra points, if Marti's not making the decision to sell one of his strikers and fail to replace him, then that's hardly giving him a full pack to deal with, is it?

As Clive has said before, we've all watched too much football for our own good (particularly at Loftus Road) and most of us aren't professional coaches or ex-players...but isn't one of the first things you're taught as a kid is to get your body over the ball if you want to keep it down? It amazes me that professional footballers who have spent their entire lives playing football don't seem to be able to do this, even occasionally!

But it's true. We need someone to hold the ball up until our (relatively slow) team get up the pitch. Frey can do that, Lyndon (for all his failings) could do it. Celar clearly can't. His highlights reel comprises various goals from inside the area, barely any headers from what I recall. That's it. That's the player. It's not even like he's missed thousands of chances this season, is it? He's just the wrong player at the wrong time.

I feel sorry for him which is why we shouldn't be booing him. Ignoring the merits or failings of the Swiss League, the biggest problem is his lack of physicality. Anyone can miss a penalty but from that first game against West Brom, we've seen that he is not a physical old school number nine, which is what we need playing with one up top. That's clearly not his fault and is down to whoever recruited him to play in this system. And the change when Alfie came on and started roughing up their defenders was night and day.

Celar did take a decent penalty against Luton in the cup.

I still can't believe the booing though - he didn't mean to miss! Also, nice to see Sam and Koki commiserating with him afterwards. Good team spirit.

I assume Nourry was there yesterday. Surely even someone that's supremely arrogant wouldn't sack Marti after hearing the support he got from the fans. He really would be on a hiding to nothing.

My hacked-off take

Yes, I really enjoyed today. Great atmosphere in the second half and rather moving to hear the support for Marti from the crowd. Of course we now have two tricky away games and it could conceivably be one point from nine, but I'm confident we can stay up even if that happens. Get some of the injured players back and find a striker by January.

The atmosphere was fantastic second half BUT we should not be booing our own players...

I would start Alfie against Cardiff though.

Noticeably the first Saturday 3pm kick-off that isn't sold out.

Think we'll give them (relatively muted) support from the start but go in 2-0 down at half-time and it'll turn toxic.

Those home stats are incredible. I'm in a nice warm bed at the moment yet I'm going to drag myself down there IN THE POURING RAIN to watch a team in which Jimmy Dunne is our most attacking player.

Good point. The failure to recruit even one decent striker over the course of a decade should make his position untenable. However, while success has many fathers, failure is an orphan...

Where have the goals gone in the Championship?
at 11:32 22 Nov 2024

Sorry to bring it back to us...but one of the reasons we are so dull and crap is we have barely any pace and not enough width (or at least no reliable wing back or winger getting accurate crosses on to the head of a traditional number nine). We really were spoiled in the early 1990s with that team.

Regarding Clive's post, it's sacrilege and will never happen but having 20 men (or even 18) on the pitch might open things up more. Footballers are now faster and stronger, so there's inevitably less space.
