If It's Wednesday, This Must Be Belgium match fred
at 18:55 25 Jan 2025

Very bizarre that a ref who would consider murder a last warning was so insistent on a nice little chat before every set piece to remind footballers of the laws of football which he doesn’t enforce anyway.

Rohl’s tactics were spot on. Defend deep and stop Smyth having as much of a chance to get in behind, tactical fouling (absolutely mental refereeing performance that would have been lenient in about 1983) and lob everything at set pieces.

But I thought the difference was how leggy we were. The game was crying out for subs well before they came. I don’t think they were the wrong subs and Colback did fine plus Varane has got through a lot recently. Doing Plymouth then Hull on Hull’s field was always a tough ask today against a physical team. All a bit of a perfect storm with their performance, the refereeing and not freshening it up a bit.

Song for Saito
at 13:06 25 Jan 2025

I assumed it would just be “oh the Koki Koki Koki” but yeah like it.

Also a bit of Lionel Richie came up on Spotify the other day and I started saying ‘Saito, say me, Saito for always, that’s the way it should be’.

I guess for parents if you’re in the ground and haven’t brought your own you’re stuck but on the rare occasions I’ve had to grab something quick, the burger van on South Africa Road isn’t bad nor the chicken shop next to William Hill.

I don’t bother in the ground before or at half-time. What’s a Guinness these days? £7 plus a kidney?

Dangerous if it gave us credit for the pub shop. Asked about this when ordering my Millwall ticket on the off chance it could be used for tickets and the guy said it was for use in the club shop.

Ashby injured or hooked?
at 00:24 22 Jan 2025

We got away with it which is the main thing and bringing him and Madsen on felt like a move you make with the game won which it was certainly not. Madsen debate has been done to death but Ashby, for some ability, just lacks it between the ears for adult football it seems. Santos must be woeful to not be trusted from the bench with the players out.

Lloyd and saito
at 23:00 21 Jan 2025

On the slow train back to York for my bed for the night.

They were both superb. Changed the whole mood of the match entirely. That first ten mins of the second half was as drab as the first and it looked like one of those grim scrappy 1-0 defeats was nailed on. Lloyd comes on and he’s all over them and it’s sticking up front. The centre-halves hardly dared go near him.

Saito’s goal was obscene it goes without saying but again was a great outlet, didn’t give it away, got in behind. All the good bits we’ve seen before coming together for 40 minutes of close to perfection.

Some negatives in the performance as a whole but tonight’s not one for thinking about them IMO. The vibe you get off this team isn’t one any of us get to see regularly and whether we finish sixth or sixteenth it’s a pleasure to follow them right now.

On the flip side the benefits aren’t as good and I get much better coffee now. Life is far too short to take any business that isn’t yours too seriously. Die tomorrow and you’ll be forgotten in a month. Meh.

The absolute bain of my life. Some really minor things where I work now require approval at a really senior level rather than just trusting people to get on with it. Anything that requires working with other markets, particularly Spain, is absolutely done on their ambiguous timelines/whenever they fancy getting round to doing their bit of it. Nobody ever wanting to be accountable for anything when it just needs someone/anyone in a particular team to make a call on it and we’ll never know what would have happened if they’d made the other call anyway.

I do miss working in smaller businesses in some ways though that comes with its own challenge. Megalomaniac owners, zero cash flow, cutting corners often etc. but you do get to the end of the week usually feeling like you’ve actually achieved something.

Ruben Amorim

I like him. He’s inherited a car crash and it’ll take time. It’ll take a lot of cash and time just to get rid of some of the absolute dross in that squad let alone build a team that plays the way he wants to consistently well. Did a cracking job at Sporting and this is a huge step up in terms of the difficulty of the role IMO but he’s the best chance they have.

Some of those players though. Antony, Sancho, Zirkzee, Casemiro. Staggering recruitment.

Weird Stats v Plymouth this season

The guy today has had a fair bit of criticism from their fans too I read. The first save from Frey was good even though the finish gave him a chance. The second was outstanding IMO.

Millwall away tickets
at 21:30 16 Jan 2025

No issues at all the last two or three times I’ve been. Remember it being ridiculous when we got beat there midweek under Warnock but it’s one of the easier away days in many respects. A million miles from what it was even a decade or so ago.

Half a chance Whittaker will be gone by the weekend but that’s looking unlikely now and he played last night so we’re essentially starting a goal down given he’ll score an overhead kick from 50 yards or something.

Still no sign of that Millwall ticket news….

Left Watford maybe a decade ago and the area entirely a couple of years ago. If I knew how to change my username I’d then realise I don’t care.

Take her out on the 15th when everywhere is dead versus a normal Saturday. Box of Milk Tray and some petrol station flowers should tide you over til then.

Not really worth a new thread but was hoping Millwall tickets would go on sale this week as I need to get one for Hull too. Guess it’ll be Monday.

We’re due to play Boro midweek in March. Would be nice if that could be moved to the fourth round weekend.

Loved it. I’m pretty sure the Prem teams would do away with the domestic cups altogether if they could.

Bromley giving Newcastle an early scare too.
