Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Brighton Centre, July 1979. Been to many brilliant gigs, but this is my stand out one, perhaps never to be bettered. Remember it still like it was only yesterday.
Thin Lizzy at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1982 comes a close second and Curtis Mayfield at Crystal Palace [not the ground] 1983 in third. |

I remember seeing Chelsea animals tossing a Mini car into the river outside Carrow Road back in 1973. Rumour had it that someone was still in the car when it happened. I didn't hang around long enough to find out. Chelsea had lost 1-0 to Norwich and they were cross.
Near Brighton's old Gallstone Road stadium in the mid 70's, I witnessed a frightening looking Southend thugette giving some poor Brighton fan a right battering with a stilettoed boot. Lots of Southend skins running amok.
In 1978 I had my scarf ripped off my neck by some Forest toe rags after an FA Cup match. Lucky it was only the scarf they took. Another poor R's fan was less fortunate. They couldn't get his scarf off him so he got a right pummelling. I was later told it was some Millwall fans who had infiltrated the Forest lot. I seem to recall they had London accents so there could have been some truth in this. Still didn't care where they were from, I just had a sore neck and a bad friction burn to boot. B%stards!!
The Old Bill laying into an innocent R's fan in the old School End in the early 80's when Loftus Road was being rebuilt. We were playing Bolton that day. The said fan fell over on the stairs and rolled into an area where he wasn't supposed to roll into. Well not according to the Old Bill. They hammered the poor guy. They were not the flavour of the month in that stand with some R's fans chanting 'Are you Chelsea in disguise' for much of the game. Some of the Old Bill were smiling knowingly at this. |

A true old school football character with a classic footballers name. They don't make the likes of him any more in the game of football. A real shame. RIP Nobby |

The remake of True Grit starring Jeff Bridges was vastly superior to the original starring John Wayne. But then I'm a fan of Mr Bridges and not of Mr Wayne.
Like Ted in a previous thread, I dislike sequels. Film making and writing at its laziest. |

The 'hoof ball' of Charlton, Trapatoni, McCartney and O'Neill bought some rewards to Ireland - qualification to major international finals. Terrible and despairing to watch most times, but these were robust often hard to beat sides managed by experienced managers.
The likes of Kerr, Staunton and now Kenny may have induced some kind of attacking football to the national team, but they brought or bring little if no rewards. Kenny, like Kerr and Staunton is looking out of his depth at international level. I hope I'm proved wrong in time as I quite like Kenny, but he can't buy a goal let alone a win at present. |

That's positive. Yes it's a trek out of town, but not too far where my mum lives. I guess that's the way things are now with new stadiums, build them out of town.
I do miss their old Queen Street ground, the quaint little grandstand and the 'cowshed' when it had a roof, behind one of the goals.
Will K's find a new ground? I used to live a stones throw from the Kingsmeadow stadium and watched many games there, including QPR a couple of times in pre season friendlies. |

What did you think of Horsham's new ground?
Not seen a match there yet but on a visit to see family last year I paid a quick visit there just to see it. I thought it looked grand for that level and there seems room for further improvements if and when required. Things are looking up for the Hornets at last after years of torment and struggle. |

Features a rarity, Ian's first ever penned piece I Made Mary Cry from his early days with Kilburn and the High Roads. |

I have a large, extensive record collection, but very little stuff from the 80's. Musically [ and politically] I hated it for a number of reasons apart from the ska revival and some post punk stuff at the very turn of the decade. Nearly all genres seemed to suffer from the decades obsession with over production and the use of synths.
Only BBC Radio 2 could run a mundane survey like this. For years they have been obsessed with 80's trite. That's a good enough reason for me to give it a wide birth when twiddling with the dial on the old wireless! |

Its interesting how people pronounce place names. Edinburgh gets pronounced Edinborough or Edinbrugh.
Glasgow gets called Glarsgow [ only if you are Tory or toff]
Middlesbrough gets mispronounced Middlesborough
Lewes gets mispronounced Loos!
Kenya used to be pronounced Keenya [ especially by the colonial types or Happy Valley crowd]
Plaistow. Now this is interesting. Londoners pronounce it as Plarstow and this maybe correct, but there is a village in West Sussex of the same name and it's pronounced Plastow which could be correct too. You choose.
Happisburgh on the north Norfolk coast gets prounounced Happysbrough but you'd get a good kicking by locals if you said that. It's pronounced Haysburgh
Here in Ireland outsiders pronounce the town Drogheda as Drogeeda or Drogayda
when its actually Drohada.
There is so much more and I always find pronunciations of words and places really fascinating
I'm in the Scon camp not scone and always will be. |

A good manager at Championship level [ like Warnock ] but sadly wanting at times in the big league where he adopts a defensive and may be cautious stance from his teams to a point where they become unbearable to watch. Just ask any Brighton or Norwich fan. |
