This now opens up a can of worms.

So can a judge over rule religious beliefs?

Poll: Are we staying up?

Hope so. Last time I checked we lived in a secular society. Belief systems have no merit before the eyes of the law, especially when the evidence indicates that those beliefs are likely to cause harm.

Never knowingly understood

I thought her objections were about the side effects of the radiotherapy treatment?

Well the Dr's want him to have medical intervention. His dad agrees. His mum doesn't.

Why does she over rule the rest?

Edit: Also it wasn't her religious beliefs, she doesn't want him having radiotherapy as it is a very harsh method of treatment.

The boy is called Neon. This should be enough for the court to judge that neither of the parents should ever be allowed to decide anything for him again!

This is a strange case. Ultimately the boy has a better chance of living if he's given the treatment experts say he should get, ie what he's now allowed to receive. The fact that one of the parents, albeit that he's estranged from his wife has agreed is enough.

Based on the mother's behaviour so far, when she and the boy went missing before his first operation for 2-3 days when it was initially scheduled, and the fact that all of her alternative experts have freely admitted that their treatments have no medical proof attached to them and better applied with known medical treatments more or less shot her in the foot anyway and made her look like an attention seeker in what is a very sensitive story.

There's also something not quite right about her, but that's only an opinion. Her body language in the news is all wrong. When the cameras are on her she smiles at them, flicks her hair, tries to walk like a catwalk model. She doesn't exactly cast the picture of a highly anxious mother, more a new age wannabe trying to push her beliefs through the media and her son is being used to some degree.

The bottom line is the experts feel they can get this kid back to health and although he may need a lot of support there seems to be a fairly good chance he can make a strong recovery, as it is a common form of the disease which has a very high recovery rate.

The mother's constant battling and delays based on her beliefs are simply putting her boy's life at risk. For me the courts and judges, for once, have acted swiftly and compassionately to the needs of the boy and the expert opinion of the surgeons.

Never knowingly right.

I heard some of this being discussed on the radio yesterday, a surgeon put a very very good case for the operation to happen, a woman also came on to explain that her kid had the operation and the kid was now perfectly healthy apart from having learning difficulties which is apparently common.

It's easy to talk but the conclusion that I came too was that the operation should go ahead based on what I heard but then like I said It's easy to talk.

What a dreadful situation to be put in, whatever people think of the parents It must be agony for them both and no I've never seen them being interviewed.

I hope this little bloke makes It through o.k.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Nobody can ever say what they'd do in the situation, or how it feels. But I haven't heard a single thing from this woman that makes me think she's anything other than loony and the court is absolutely right to impose the treatment. Totally unfair to deprive the child of treatment that doctors say is necessary to keep him alive because of some opinion you've cooked up yourself with no medical training whatsoever. And what about the dad in all of this - he wants the treatment to go ahead, why does his opinion count for so little?

On another point, about the media coverage of this... If this woman lived in a council house with seven other kids the Daily Mail would be unleashing a sht storm about her being unfit and how she should have her kids taken off her. But because she's seemingly educated and middle class and the kid's called Neon we're all trying to see it from both sides.

I noticed that as well.
Seems a little too happy with lots of cameras and the attention.
For crying out loud, boy has op, good chance of survival, albeit with possible side effects. Boy doesn't have op, he dies.
As a parent, I see this as an obvious choice what to do.
Bet she ends up selling a story to one of the red tops, no doubt Max Clifford is circling

The only thing I find disappointing in this case is that the mothers mothers haven't been questioned. If it were up to me she'd be charged with negligence.

PS I think Max Clifford will be steering clear of any cases involving young boys for a while!

Yes spot on. Just to be clear he HAS had the operation (which although she failed in the courts, she rang the judge at midnight to try and get stopped again!), this is about the follow up raidotherapy.

She is also on her 2nd legal team, which only adds to the opinion that maybe her son's health isn't her only concern, shall we say.

Yes doctors do make mistakes, but with something like this, they are all you've got and surely best to go with what they say.

There was talk of getting opinions from "abroad", quite rightly the courts have taken the view that conventional treatments carried out as speedily as possible are the best chance this young lad has.

With regards to the OP asking whether a judge can rule over religious beliefs, the answer in my opinion is most definitely YES.

You cannot allow a parents religious beliefs put their children's life at risk in these situations. There is a bit in Richard Dawkins "The God Delusion" where he points out we wouldn't label a young child a "socialist child" or a "fascist child" based on its parents political belief, so why do we allow children to be labelled as "islamic" or "christian" based on their parent religious beliefs? When they grow up to an age when they can make their own informed decision about their lives, then fine, they can do what they want, but until them it is the states job to intervene if necessary to ensure that have the best chance of reaching that age.

The Mail aren't even trying to see it from both sides. Their front page story yesterday was about the boy having treatment imposed against the mother's will, and didn't mention the father and his views, let alone quote him. The Mail has form on health quackery, they led the fight against MMR.

She wouldn't comment outside the court today as she has an exclusivity agreement with a "red top" newspaper.

Lets hope he makes a good recovery.

They are currently running a crusade to make internet pornography blockers mandatory unless specifically opted out of because apparently every child watches Internet porn and grows up to be a sexual deviant.

I suspect that a kid growing up with no knowledge of sex beyond a sex education booklet is more likely to become a deviant than one whose watched a softcore lesbian video but c'est la vie.

Ironically kids can access more explicit content on MTV unchallenged than on an afternoon of Internet trolling.

The mother must be a raving nutbag to call her child this.

The other stuff I havent really pondered, I couldnt get my head round calling a child "Neon"

Pleased the kid is getting treatment but horrible position to be in.
Things happen so quickly - as they have to - but very scary trying to keep up. My wife went from diagnosis to significant op within a week last year and you just have to trust those in control.
Hope for speedy recovery.
