The Big Match 1979 ITV4 11:16 - Dec 11 with 2622 viewsonlyrinmoray

Just watched Spurs v Rangers 1-1 draw. Dave Clement for us Steve Perryman for Spurs 1 minute later.... Nothing changes. Rangers were 3rd bottom and were relegated However Chelsea were bottom we both went down Forgot how bad the pitches were especially Derby nothing but sand. Rangers played 2 games in 2 days over Easter Real men

Derek Richardson was in goal some good saves but a couple of real howlers. Just like Tony Roberts Quality of football was poor mainly due to the state of the pitches Don Shanks was rubbish. ripped apart by Peter Taylor Forgot about John Pratt as well played over 300 games for Spurs looked a good player
Oh Paul Hart scored for Leeds, didnt smile then either

I think Ernie Howe might have been the worst player I've ever seen

I think thats a scan of the programme rather than a match day team sheet, Stan was playing. As we were on our way to relegation, we only filled one of the "sections" at the away end, By the time we returned to Div1 under Venables, we rammed all 4 sections from corner flag to corner flag at that end. Oh and as ever, lost (3-2) after leading

Wasn't Perryman quite close to getting our manager's job a few years back, maybe before Holloway?

He definitely was, he was talking once about how he used to go and watch rangers in the sixties, I asked him who the better player was, marsh or Bowles....he said marsh.

.....Stainrod and Flanagan our scorers I think. Probably the earliest away game I went to that I remember in some detail.

Karl Ready definitely the worst for me. We've had people like Curtis, Rehman, Moore, leaburn etc but only fleetingly when compared to Ready who was here for ten, long, gruelling years.

I may have been slightly harsh on Ernie as Ron Abbott has now come into my mind!

I was with a Tottenham-supporting mate, in the stand beside the pitch, so with the same view as in the screenshot (with the away end to my left). There was a bit of trouble there as I recall.

Last season was the first time I had been back there since 1979. The whole place depresses the hell out of me.

Actual Team:

3 years after our runners up season the team was a shaow of itself.

When I think back I'm amazed Jim Gregory didnt invest in replacing Webb, McClintock, Masson, Givens, Parkes, Leach & Thomas.

Clement, Gillard, Hollins, Bowles remained from the team while Gerry Francis was injured most of the time.

We got in over this period Shanks, Howe, Roeder(who was decent but Burtenshaw never picked enough), Needham went to Forest via us as I think County wouldnt sell him direct to Forest plus a few unknowns and brought in not very good youth team players.

Eastoe was swapped for Mickey Walsh who lived off a wonder goal on MOTD for Blackpool and was pretty poor for us.

JG must have been having a torrid time in the motor, exstor..... business as the following season he started splashing the cash after selling off the last of the rangers family silver. tommy Doc came and went and in comes TV and spends even more money.

I really wonder what would have been had after our European season he invested again. It may have been down to losing the great Dave Sexton and ending up with Frank Sibley and then the dreaded Steve Burtenshaw (the protoype for Paul Hart).

captains fantastic

First QPR match I ever went to I shook Ernie Howe and Don Shanks hands as they made there way to the dressing room.... Little did I know then how poor they both were!
