Can someone please tell these people that if you are around 50 years old & three or four stone overweight then you arent going to suddenly become an overnight Olympian just because you can ( just about ) squeeze in to some Lycra & are lucky enough to be able to afford splashing out 2 grand on a fancy Italian bike.

The small proportion of idiots who fly red lights give cyclists a bad name, the majority are just trying their best to say out of harms way. Every cyclist tries to beat changing lights or sets off in front of the traffic because as cyclist taking off from a standing start you will wobble naturally. Gaining speed you can keep your line and you don't have to worry half about the cars behind and they don't have to worry about you. Some of these guys you get so mad at might just be staying out of the way rather then getting squeezed
I don't doubt half anti-cycling motorist's on here who claim to hate everyone on two wheels would hold that attitude if they tried a week commuting to work on a bike. It's a different point of view with people cutting you up and lorry tires level with your face coming past you. I think there is a middle ground.
It might sound like hell but it's in fact great fun. Gets rid of stress post work, makes you live longer, lets you eat like a pig and drink like a fish. Cant be all bad!

The small proportion is those who DO stop at red lights, sadly.
It really does sadden me to say that. In most cases (i.e football hoolies as we've seen tonight with Leeds) it is the minority spoiling it for the rest but I can't say the same for cyclists. I do about 20 miles a day to work and back through London and it's not about trying to beat the changing lights, they just sail through like they're not there. When leaving work, I turn right out of a side road onto a main road and there's a set of lights just to the right. I've lost count the number of times I can't turn right when all the traffic has stopped due to cyclists going through the red light to my right. One bloke had the audacity to have a go at me as I pulled out to turn right after he ran the light.
Agree with the rest though.

I don't start off first at lights , I wait until buses/lorry have moved off first then I go.Call it self preservation. I'd hate to miss giving my daughter away at her wedding.
Funnily enough we were pulling out of Perivale Community Centre tonight when there was a thud on our bonnet. A girl of about 19/20 crashed her bike into our car as she rode on the pavement with no lights wearing all black clothing at about 7.30pm. Even my 9 year old said she was an idiot.

Totally agree
I normally cycle the 8 miles to work or ride my scooter (300cc) I never shoot through red lights on the bike but I do slow down to walking pace and if the crossing is clear of pedestrians and vehicles I continue on my way. Never had an issue or near miss in 5 years.
Get to see all sides of the argument when I switch from Cycle to Scooter to Car.
Pet hates
Idiots in Porsches thinking they can beat a 50cc hair dryer at the lights Cyclists with no or sub standard lights Car drivers turning left across bus and cycle lanes not checking mirrors Car drivers speeding over road humps to get ahead of motorcycle or bike in front London's cycle lanes Pizza delivery drivers

Just about every road here in Denmark has cycle lanes, and if a car, bus etc wants to turn right (left in england), they have to check to see its clear as the cycle has right of way every time.
It was a bit scary at first overtaking on the inside when you can see they are about to turn, but it seems to work, and i don't recall any accidents.
More people cycle overhere for work or pleasure so i guess the rules are slightly different.
Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

I grew up in Bracknell, although everyone slates the place it was one of the first to build purpose built cycle roads which aren't on normal roads. All the major roundabouts and junctions have underpasses and cycle lanes, yet you still get some who insist on riding on the roads when there's no need.
favourite cheese mature Cheddar. FFS there is no such thing as the EPL
Thge main difference between reckless cyclists and reckless car drivers is that the former are more likely to be a danger to themselves, the latter more likely to main or kill others.
What you mean speeding, a shocking inability to anticipate, waving at people who'd done nothing wrong and trying to run down absent minded pedestrians? Then putting it all on Youtube like the obvious sanctiminious pr*t that he is.

I would pay good money to watch one of those tw ats smash into a kerb and go flying through a shop window at about 50mph. Absolute cu nts with no consideration for anyone else - sooner or later they're going to have a proper accident with a big fu ck-off vehicle and the poor bast ard driving said vehicle will have to live with wiping out one of these kno bs. Or they'll smash into some poor bast ard crossing the street. Ars eholes.

According to 2011 figures only 107 cyclists were killed. Compared with 362 motorcycles, 453 pedestrian and 883 car it doesn't seem that high to me.
it's lucky there are no youtube videos of car drivers being reckless, isn't it?
don't tarnish us all with the same brush. Or should i assume that you do 165 MPH routinely in your car because i saw a youtube clip of someone doing it?
Can we not knock it?

the majority of drivers that i know that moan about cyclists are the same ones that leave the pub after 6 pints with their car keys in hand ready to drive home. i cycle daily but also drive and can honestly say i see more drivers breaking the rules of road then i do cyclists. indicating seems to be out of fashion these days, so does adering to the give way marking. i regularily see drives applying make up, shaving and chatting on their mobiles while the drive passed a primary school above the speed limit. Just look the number of deaths a year due to dangerous driving and itll pretty much show you who the real scourge of the road.

To me that says more about the company you keep than drivers as a whole.
My only issue with cyclists is that they seems to think it's acceptable to drive through red lights, I see it all the time when I drive up to Loftus Road. It's not like forgetting to indicate or not sticking to the give way rules because those things are not seen as the norm or in any way acceptable by other drivers. If I see a driver doing those things I will normally offer him a stern glance and a few choice words. Somehow it has become acceptable for cyclists not to stop at junctions and perhaps that's why it's so frustrating for drivers.
With regards to the stats earlier in the thread I would imagine those stats are skewed by the relative number of cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers. Also there are far more cyclists and much more traffic in London than other parts of the UK so a high proportion of those accidents probably happened in London. Around where I live I rarely see cyclists and if I do they tend to have their own cycle lanes.

it would never happen in england for a number of reasons, but in copenhagen cyclists have their own section of road and own set of traffic lights. these cycle lanes are also seprerated to the point where motorists can encroach on it, this must really limit accidents.
ps i work in a pub so unfortunately I dont have much of a choice in what company i keep. to add insult to injurty the majority are chelscum aswell

Yeah and as said in a great post a bit further up, we've all also seen innumerable numbers of drivers texting/on the phone/applying make up/eating/smoking/whatever else while driving
