Cycling on 11:54 - Jul 29 by HollowayRanger | ANY idea why when the gap was down to one minute and the 2nd group broke away to join the 1st group why the gb team didnt go with them? tactics wrong or not enough energy? cant see wiggins winning wednesday after france and yesterday |
Probably a bit of both but mainly tactics. I think the problem lay in the fact that they tried to ride it like Sky rode in the TDF. Dave Brailsford is the manager for both Sky and GB and as the GB team was predominantly Sky riders they thought it would work again. As it turned out it was a risky strategy with a smaller team. Also, the Sky team have riders like Bernie Eisel, Boassen Hagen and Rodgers who did an amazing amount of work to get Wiggins the victory. In hindsight it's easy to say where it went wrong, but they knew the last 50km was pretty flat and a fast run into the finish and I think, as we also saw with the women's race, if the peloton don't work together and only a handful of riders are willing to do the chasing, it's very hard to close the gap. Not sure about Wednesday. One of Wiggins' main rivals - Cancellera - came off yesterday so maybe injured. But bear in mind Wiggins absolutely smashed the field on the two time trials in the TFD and one of those came the day after a killer climbing day in the Pyrenees at the end of the third week, where he beat his nearest rival - Nibali - quite comfortably. Nibali was thought to be the better climber.

Cycling on 17:16 - Jul 29 with 621 views | Writtler | I think they tried to ride it like the World Championships last year more than the TDF - 3 less riders though made a huge difference and no race radios...

Canon 600D with a 50mm f1.4 lens. The pictures have been cropped too and a couple of of them slightly enhanced. I've only just got the lens so was playing around with some of the settings. Using auto mode was difficult as a lot of the cars had their headlights on high beam so it darkened the pictures. So I put it on shutter priority, set it at 1/800th and hoped for the best! edit: I also had it on manual focus. Using AF with fast moving objects can sometimes be tricky as the lens can 'hunt' whilst trying to focus on an ever changing object as you pan across and it won't take a picture. So, I focussed on a point I thought would be optimum then switched to MF to effectively switch AF off. That's the fun of photography though, experimenting with the settings. If the GB team had followed the 2nd breakaway at Box Hill they would have lost Cav The strategy was always to rude at the front at a steady, but high pace Any changes in tempo ie chasing down breakaways, would sap a sprinters energy and make the less effective on the sprint The Germans lack of any strategy was bizarre to say the least Personally, I think sentiment for Cav got in the way of a GB win. In Froome, Stannard, Millar and Wiggins we had enough to follow the second breakaway and get the win
| I've found a team sheet for the weekend - anyone interested ? |
