Subbuteo and QPR -- who remembers Subbuteo? 17:56 - Jun 21 with 7561 viewsDylanP

So I am reading a book at the moment called "Growing Up With Subbuteo" written by the son of the bloke who invented Subbuteo. Its a pretty crazy story of how subbuteo got off the ground.

Anyhow, the interesting fact is that the bloke who invented Subbuteo (Peter Adolph) was a QPR fan. The book itself shows a couple of Subbuteo men on the front in QPR colours!

Pitch now stays in place due to the four long sticks arising from each corner which, upon meeting above the pitch in perfect harmony ,display a scoreboard. Wonderful stuff.

Don't know about posting on here but he definitely posts, or used to post on qprdot.org as "krama".

I've read Mark Adolph's book as well. It's an enjoyable read.

True story. My mate stole the QPR Subbuteo team from The Model Shop in Harrow when we were about 14. The guilt was so intense, even more so with it being QPR, that we decided to smuggle it back into the shop about half an hour later.

Forgive me Peter!!

I had Super Striker. You pressed the player's head and his right foot kicked the ball.

Top thread!
Happy memories - Dad made a base complete with advertising hoardings.
Heaps of fights and squashed players
Think I had to paint the hoops onto a dark blue kit as buggar all range to choose from down here. Pre the days of internet ordering - not even sure if airfreight had been invented! Do remember getting the FA Cup Final Shoot magazines around Xmas time...

Great thread. I loved Subbuteo. I could never get a QPR team, so I bought a Leeds team then painstakingly painted blue hoops on them with a very thin brush I used on my Airfix kits. It took me bloody ages, but I got my QPR team. I also used a smaller ball from another football game rather than that huge ball that was bigger than the players. This required more skill and the ball didn't roll about all over the place.

Did you know the name Subbuteo is derived from the word hobby which is also the name of the small falcon the hobby, Latin name Falco Subbuteo.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Great to here everyone's comments re subbutteo. I bought my first set in 1973 it was everton and man utd plain blue and white and red and white. We ran leagues over the winter fa cups league cups world cups. I'm now 48 and still have 40 teams from 73 to 82 when I bought last team. Worth about 2 to 3 grand at mo. my daughters want me to sell but I can't. To many happy memories. Do you think I should sell?

I've still got loads of subbuteo stuff in the loft in a huge box. I've got about 6 QPR teams as every time I went to a boot sale I'd buy one if I saw it .

First post - Hi guys

Had to comment as I recently rediscovered Subbuteo after buying my son one for his birthday recently. Apparently the italians are mad on it and if you look on ebay some of the original rare teams go for astonishing sums

I bought him his set from subbuteoworld on the net. Although expensive, the pitch is much better these days as it is rubber backed and stays flat. The players are a bit heavier and easier to control but almost impossible to curl like the old ones. I am tempted to buy a couple of the old teams just to reminisce! Although he loves FIFA on the Playsattion my 12 year old has loved playing and his Dad has not lost his touch!

That huge ball was the standard ball. We always used to play with the "advanced" ball which was about half the size - much better.

Got the Club edition one year and never stopped playing. Bought the QPR team again two years ago and still cannot resist buying the odd set at car boot sales. There is a company -Spanish, I think- which now makes them but some players have cardboard bases. When I got Club edition, I was really thrilled then pissed off to find my mate had the International edition only to find another mate had World Cup! Spent many a happy day playing it as well as the Wembley FA Cup board game.

I had another footy game on a moulded plastic base, with players that spun round at the twist of a knob.
After the first one broke,I took it apart and it had crisscross elastic cord around it.I think it was associated with Bobby Charlton, but the name of the game escapes me.
Anyone know what it was called?

Great thread. Im sad enough to remember that around 1978 our numbers in the subbuteo catalogue were 85 (listed as feyernoord) and 215

I collected many accessories and probably loved building random stadiums than actually playing the game.

Could never forget my mate throwing a bucket of water over the pitch to replicate it being waterlogged

Yes, Casdon Soccer was great. Much smaller than subbuteo with a ball bearing as the ball. Rediscovered this as well a few years back and picked it up on ebay for about a tenner including the original box.

I bought the Arsenal Subbuteo team for one of my boys and to make it look more authentic I got my Humbrol brown paint and coloured the flesh of some of the players!

also, there are a few examples of the Subbuteo streaker around
