Has anyone seen the penalty conceded by Villa tonight? It was a short goal kick from Martinez towards Mings, who decided to stop it with his hand and try to give it to Martinez to retake.Bizarre isn’t the word.

I've seen Rob Green ready himself for a corner by standing behind the goal line. With predictable results as you can imagine.

Oh dear
I taught Tyrone’s 2 cousins A level and they were brilliant. Obviously proud of Tyrone too, but I’m reminded of a quip I made in a briefing following a trivial breach of school rules by Tyrone. I said to my nearest colleague “Mings ain’t what they used to be”. I’ve been eating my words ever since till today!

Only thing I can think is that he thought the ball had been thrown back by the crowd and rolled past Martinez?

Double standard refereeing again.

Arsenal did this (last year?) against Bayern Munich but the referee dismissed it as a silly mistake despite Tuchel totally losing his s**t.

Yet another reason not to be taking these short goal kicks every time. I am surprised there isn't a stat out there which shows how many goals are actually conceded because of messing about with it at the back. I bet it's a significant contribution especially for those teams (like ours) who just don't have defenders with the technical ability to play intricate passes under pressure.

The algorithm bods have calculated it reduces our xG conceded by 0.0006 per game probably.

Watching a bit of Watford v Oxford. Oxford limited but they know what they’re doing. Not route one by any means but when there’s not a pass on they’ll play it forward and win their fair share of second balls or get a throw 40 yards on from where they started. We’ll play a pass that isn’t really there and if we’re lucky then smash it forward under pressure and have no one within ten yards of where it lands for that second ball.

It's just yet another sht modern football phenomenon we've been told to accept for fear of being labelled a dinosaur.

Now, apparently, every goal kick has to have the goalkeeper and two centre backs int he six yard box. And we have to wait for them to get there. And we have to allow them to pisball about placing the ball. Amd we have to allow them to assess. Sometimes they'll decide no, we're going to go long, and then we have to sit and wait for them all to jog up the field for a conventional goal kick. The goalkeeper will often respot the ball again if this is the case. Now even if they take it and get it wrong we're being convinced the guy is allowed to pick it up and have another go.

IT'S FCKING HORSESHIT.

Well done to the referee in this instance. Penalty. Fck you and your fcking nonsense. Penalty.

But with a goalkeeper and 2 centre backs within 2 yards of him in the box, if he then passes it to one of them and they pass it a yard back that's a 200% successful pass completion stat. If the defender then picks the ball up from the goalkeeper then statistically that's a 100% successful dickhead completion stat.

Meanwhile I'm hiring my Moss Bros tuxedo to attend the award for our goal of the month competition, which this month goes to the Boro defender's kneecap.

Never knowingly right.

When did this really become a thing? Because I feel like long goal kicks were the absolute standard until not long ago at all.

Leeds wont need any soft penalties i fear they are ready to rip us to shreds .Its even more sickening to see the decline at QPR since we whipped them off Loftus Road what a let down and no end in sight sadly

The reason they do these short kicks is that the rule was changed so you could be inside the box on a goal kick (stupid change) and the idea is that you use your extra man at the back (the keeper) to pass it around so, you get the ball up the pitch in the oppo's half and retain possession.

This worked for a while until teams worked it out and started to press. And then they got better at the press and then teams not as good at playing out, could not get it out of their last third and ended up gifting the oppo an attack in their own half. A few years pass by and now even the good teams struggle to get it out and now managers employ all sorts of formations to weasle it out from the back. 5 at the back, no 3, no 5 but with 4 mids, no 3 mid and 3 at the back with inverted fullbacks and so on. Even if they do, it becomes a tiresome game of keeping the ball from side to side for fear of losing it while the oppo parks the bus as Boro did despite being 2-0 up and us being utter tosh.

A keeper should be able to kick the ball past the halfway line. Even Sunday keepers can do this. Then your centre forward is supposed to win the ball, and even better hold the ball, even if he does not, the midfield reducers (Field) are supposed snaffle up any knock backs and then you gain position well away from your goal. Even better if they can flick it on to the forwards or wingers and have an immediate route one attack. A team does not have to do this all the time, just now and again.

Our great 90s team used Sir Les to do just that, and we had many other players. Before Les, there was Falco and bang average players like Colin Clarke, Dichio, Blackstock, Dowie, Hulse, and Hugill. Better players were Furlong, Helguson, Austin, Smith, Zamora, and dross, like Nygaard, Czerkas, Bonne, and the worst Hateley. Even when we had Bannister and Byrne up front, who were not the biggest, we still went long as you could always get the knockback.

Without Frey, we are short on long-ball-winning forwards, but this is not an excuse to never hit it long. Get the ball in their half, especially if we have been under the cosh for a while and cannot break their press at all. Fool em, make em think we are gonna play it out, and then quickly rush out and boot it up. It will make them think twice about upping the press when we do want to play it out again and help us as it stretches their midfield. Especially is Celar is playing, he does not move and sometimes actually wins a flick on. He might as well use his tree-like positioning to actually make something happen. Kohli can win headers too.

But for sure, as Gallen said on the podcast, we cannot play it out all the time; we just don't have the midfielders for it, even though Varane is getting better at this.

zzzzzzzzzz

Does my noggin in when QPR do it.
It's the most stupid, pointless thing that happens in football. As someone pointed out above, it's probably improves to their pass completion stats, therefore players do it.
Unless some bright spark on here that knows football better than me can explain, i cant see any tactical advantage in it at all. Just invites more pressing nearer the box, doesn't it?
