lots of films I love already mentioned. The Thing is probably the film I've watched more times than any other. It's a masterpiece.
Evil Dead films are all great, I also loved the new(ish) Evil Dead Rise too. Good if you like a healthy dose of humour mixed in with horror. The TV series Ash Vs Evil Dead also a lot of fun. Bruce Campbell is also brilliant playing an elderly Elvis in Bubba Ho Tep.
A few I've not seen mentioned..... The Borderlands (2013 film, nothing to do with the video game) A Dark Song Brightburn Midsommar The Lighthouse Juan Of The Dead (Mexican zombie film) Colour Out Of Space Absentia Mandy The Ritual Ghost Stories

Would be remiss not to give FW Murnau’s ‘Nosteratu’ a passing nod. It must have been mind blowing for new audiences to see in the early days of cinema - over 100 years old.

A few which haven't been mentioned:
Odishon (Audition) - kiri kiri kiri for people who know. Quite quite unsettling, slow, but when it drops it REALLY drops.
Smile 2 - this is excellent and as good as the first. There's some choreography in an apartment which is outstanding.
The Substance is Demi Moore's best film since I don't know when. Brilliant body horror if that's your bag with a third act which is quite horrible.
The X, Pearl, Maxxxine trilogy - Mia Goth is simply brilliant. I'm a fan of Pearl particularly because of its pacing and narrative.
Saint Maud - I loved it, many didn't. The best last frame in a film ever.
I liked Immaculate - I wasn't sure where it was going but, when it drops, it drops.
Late Night with the Devil - seek it out. It's set in 1977 it's a film of a TV show with a found footage type vibe. David Dastmalchian is amazing.
I'm looking forward to the Heretic with Hugh Grant and 28 Years Later - the first two are excellent - out next year.
I loved the idea of Late Night With The Devil, and enjoyed the set up, but found it a bit disappointing in the end. I reckon there's a much better version that could have been made

I love Korean and Japanese horror/sci-fi and the acting is generally excellent. Think the over-emoting may be lost in translation, especially if it’s English dubbed. Train to Busan is an excellent movie with great zombies and action sequences: the little girl does cry a lot though!
It was a guy. Some bloke blubbering all through his scene. Awful.
The film did zombies pretty well though to be fair.
I quite liked that Late Night With The Devil. Wasn't amazing but had a good vibe to it.
I really liked Tarot, Abigail, Terrifier 3 this year. And sort of liked In a Violent Nature. It was slow like molasses but had some great scenes.

I get what you mean. I liked the premise and, like you say, it might have been better, it still pushed the envelope.
Event horizon acting from Robinson crusoe 1954 oscar winner irishman Dan O'Herlihy, he was pushing 70 by this time but percolates a slow motion riot actng masterclass in this segment of 'Halloween 3', 1982, playing the role of Conal Cochran, owner of 'Silver Shamrock'
Conal Cochran: Enjoy the horror-thon, Doctor, and don't forget to watch the big giveaway afterwards. Doctor Daniel Challis: Why, Cochran, why?
Conal Cochran: Do I need a reason? Mr. Kupfer was right, you know. I do love a good joke, and this is the best ever: a joke on the children. But there's a better reason... You don't really know much about Halloween. You thought no further than the strange custom of having your children wear masks and go out begging for candy.
... It was the start of the year in our old Celtic lands, and we'd be waiting in our houses of wattles and clay. The barriers would be down, you see, between the real and the unreal, and the dead might be looking in to sit by our fires of turf...
Halloween... the festival of Samhain!! The last great one took place three thousand years ago, when the hills ran red with the blood of animals and children. Doctor Daniel Challis: Sacrifices!
Conal Cochran: It was part of our world... our craft. Doctor Daniel Challis: Witchcraft!
Conal Cochran: To us, it was a way of controlling our environment. It's not so different now... it's time again. In the end, we don't decide these things, you know; the planets do. They're in alignment, and it's time again. .
The world's going to change tonight, Doctor, I'm glad you'll be able to watch it...
And... Happy Halloween.

Any recommendations for 12 year olds to watch? They are having a stay over (my son is 12 and it's his mates before anyone comments!!) and want to watch a horror but I don't want them going back to their parents traumatised!!

Good luck with that one!
Probably best you get consensus with the other parents on which film, so at least you'll all be collectively to blame
E.T. scared the shit out of me, maybe go with that.

Halloween 3 is the only Halloween that I like.
The first is okay but honestly pretty dull and tame. The second is a bit better but again still a bit dull. After that they just get worse and worse. The recent trilogy (starting in 2018) is the worst trilogy in horror. It's just utter shit from start to absolutely shit finish.
But Halloween 3 feels like a lost John Carpenter film. It's as silly as it is good and I love it.

If they're 'young' 12 year olds Beetlejuice Gremlins
If they want to push the envelope a bit the Thing is doable. I'd go Tremors and Arachnophobia.
Ah that's a shame about Gen Z, not watched it yet.
Yeah I know what you mean, but I'll always check Wheatley's stuff out, and the same with Mike Flanagan, it's not *always* amazing but usually interesting at least.

Generation Z is Hollyoaks with low quality zombies. Plot is risible (outbreak starts when army 16 yr old driving a chemical weapon on his own conveniently crashed) and acting leaves a lot to be desired. Us Brits struggle with doing zombies (28 days films excepted).

Halloween season of the witch ...criminally underrated, also love Don't look now ...that ending!!! Also Don't be afraid of the Dark....the orginal 1973 movie. Those little goblin creatures still haunt my nightmare! Also a honorable mention to The Ghost stories for Christmas plays, scared the shite out of me in the 70,s. Lots of brilliant M R James adaptations!
AND WHEN I DREAM , I DREAM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN I SCREAM I SCREAM ABOUT YOU!!!!!

Really wouldn’t suggest The Thing for kids!
When my eldest was 12, he'd have loved it - when my youngest was 12, he wouldn't! Horses for courses - some kids have more interest in horror than others!

Shaun of the Dead was a good British Zombie film.
Occasional providers of half decent House music.
