Marti and yesterday 08:24 - Oct 27 with 5371 viewsGaryBannister86

No doubt today that the faithful were 100% behind Marti, not a single note of dissent and no manager has had their name sung quite as enthusiastically. Good, and if Nourry does for him in whatever way then I reckon he will be in for a very rough ride.

So good as well to see the organisation and fight of the lads. Cook, as stated before, was bloomin' brilliant and I still think his importance is underrated. I was very impressed by Nardi too, as he has now added coming for crosses to his performances so as though he wasn't really needed to make great saves, he produced a really professional display.

Praise too for JCS, Dunne, Field, provided a tough backbone. Varane must make a difference to our midfield even if perhaps it isn't clear why yet.

Not at all convinced by Ashby, who was of course filling in, Smyth again had pace, again hit the deck too easily and when he was actually fouled allowed the (appalling) ref to have an excuse not to give it. Just after half time he got deep in the box and cut it back....without looking.....to no-one.

Celar is now a standing joke, sadly. I've never seen a more ineffective player or a striker with less about them. Bennie's endeavour put him to shame and would have liked to have seen more of Alfie as he adds something. Chair nowhere near up to speed yet but that is one thing we can bank on, he will get better.

I liked Saito today, good effort, good control.

Referee made about 5 appalling decisions against us in the second half, perhaps balanced out by a Dunne handball in their box that plenty would have given.

Lovely to clap Marti and the boys at the end. Much more like it.

Thanks for that, good to hear how the fans reacted to the game.

Sounds like my type of game, get a lot of satisfaction watching underdogs nullify the opposition.

We’ve got to carry on like this, treating every game like we’re playing a Burnley, stopping teams playing, hanging in there and trying to nick a goal from somewhere. It’s all we’ve really got if we’re honest. We always look in most jeopardy when we’re dispossessed up the pitch, just make those forays in breakaway positions.

Survival won’t be pretty this season.

I liked Parker's comment after the game, whatever you think of him...

"Today was a boxing match that was always probably going to end in the 10th or 11th round and it didn't materialise for us. We jabbed and jabbed away and we beat them up and they've come out the ring with scars and bruises along the way and they've managed to hold on in there."

About right.

Never knowingly right.

That triangle base of Nardi, Cook & JCS is quite reasonably top-6 quality. A strong foundation to work from and get out of this early mess we find ourselves in.

I wasn't at the game but watched it live on a stream......

A couple of times the camera went to MC and he was not a 'happy man' with what was going on. It was the most animated that I have ever seen him. He was chastising some players for not doing what he wanted & expected. He came across on TV as quite an angry man.

Perhaps, the situation he finds the team in as concerning, worrying & difficult.

My firm view, though, he is doing OK & we will come through these difficult times very soon & move up to the top half of the table.

Yeah agree, nice to see cook getting a bit of help back there now JCS is back. Feel for cook getting the ball of the keeper, trying to find a pass when no one in front of him wants it, then getting a full on hospital pass back. Can’t make for a good day at the office! Its annoying enough just watching that

Thanks for that whatever happens including relegation we must stay with Marti. To be honest I don’t think we can afford to sack him anyway. I guess we are still paying Ainsworth and Dobbo until thier contracts expire.

He also said it was a 'half a pitch game', which, however good they are and however limited we are (and they weren't that good, however much Marti bigged them up - that's 8 goals in 10 games, I think, after their opening little flurry), was both accurate and embarrassing. The Ainsworth win was far more impressive, and impressively spawny, as we had a similarly shameful (lack of) possession but somehow scored two goals. Yesterday, apart from Smyth's unlucky effort, we barely crossed the halfway line!

We may have been many things yesterday, but "embarrassing" was not in any way one of them, unless you count Celar's impression of a footballer.

That's what I think, and have been saying, too. In his last couple of post-match interviews, he comes across to me as seething, tired, and hacked off, while trying to put a brave face on it for the camera! As a manager who's always telling us he wants to play front-foot, possession-based, enteprising football, and has very occasionally even managed it with us, he must be deeply unhappy on an aesthetic level with yesterday's 'spectacle', whatever the effectiveness of his 'low-block' moral victory. It was basically Ainsworth's performance again (though they didn't come as close to scoring this time as then), but without the goal threat and goals, so you could say we've regressed rather than progressed since then on the basis of the weeken's offering.

It seems I'm harder to please, but I think 25% possession, your keeper timewasting 20 minutes in, and barely crossing the halfway line all game is embarrassing, yes. Against anyone! It was like we played the whole game as if we had 10 men - though I suppose with Mr Celar up top we effectively did!

Actually,. normally I would agree with you as I hate a small-time complex, however we are so badly out of form and in need to stop the bleeding, I had no issue with taking it slowly yesterday.

I don't actually think we were as negative as you and Scotty make out. We could have had plenty of counter attacks but the paucity of our attackers made them all fizzle out. We hit the bar which was closer then they came.

It really wasn't the Alamo. Nardi made one straightforward save really.

I think your key choice of verb - 'could have' - is telling. As Marti himself says, football is about doing, not deserving or intending. It's rather amusing to say, as you effectively seem to be saying, if we had different players and hence a different team, we might have made a (more) decent fist of it.

Taking it 'slowly', sure (which is our normal default at the best of times), and you're right we restricted them to a handful of presentable chances, is one thing, but playing like a non-league side looking for a replay in the FA Cup is something else. They're professional players, playing in the same division, against a team that, as I pointed out, has scored 8 goals in 10 games. And we were missing one unfit veteran defender, a rookie winger, and a 35 year old clogger, not a slew of internationals!

Don't get me wrong - I'm glad of the point, which we probably deserved, and it showed we could have a defensive base again to build from, with Saito and Smyth tucking in when needed. It's just that everything else about this team is still faintly terrifying.

Yep, totally get what you are saying, but my point is that we didn't really play like a non-league side at Man City or whatever, as we did try and make counter attacks (in my eyes), it's just that whenever we made them our attackers weren't good enough to make them substantial.

But I know what you mean, I hated GA's whole approach to games like these - I just don't think it was quite as bad as it is being made out.

The Burnley fans I spoke with on the walk back to the station thought they'd played well, possibly their best performance of the season, slight sense of shock they had'n't won four nothing. Generally surprised at our steely defence - as was I to be honest.

Been thinking about this since you posted, gazz, and I don't really think Cifuentes was any different to normal. Or at least not as I've seen him on the stream over the year.

He can be very passive, but when he's not happy with something he's always been incredibly animated.

Then he reverts to type for the post-match interview: serious, stoic but reasonable.

Like you, I think that results will continue to improve, though with the same caveat as last year: the small squad needs to stay fit.

You may well be right Brian, I go to home games so see very little of MC's reactions. I normally watch streams and they do not normally focus on MC. It is just that on Saturday I saw some or his reactions and annoyance and I was surprised. Perhaps its normal.

Obviously we can't hear so don't know, but to me a lot of his reaction on Saturday was about the referee. And he was right. He was as exasperated as the rest of us that what wasn't a foul on Saito, Smyth or Lloyd one minute was then given as a foul on Anthony, Koleosho etc the very next second.

I'm about level with him on the Stan Bowles side and have noticed, and occasionally chortled at, him going a bit mental during other games.

Was he getting agitated about the persistent doubling up on an opponent with the ball while leaving his nearby teammate uncovered, facilitating the easy pass out? Because I certainly was.
